Bessent calls for steep interest rate cuts

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday that short term interest rates should be 1.5 to 1.75 percentage points lower than their current level, keeping up the administration's pressure campaign on the Federal Reserve. Bessent called for a half-point reduction in September at the next meeting of the Fed's interest rate-setting committee, starting a series of cuts that would lower rates substantially below their current level of 4.25 to 4.5 percent. 'We could go into a series of rate cuts here, starting with a 50 basis point rate cut in September,' he said on the Bloomberg News television network. 'We should probably be 150, 175 lower. I think the committee needs to step back.' Bessent's remarks were his clearest yet on what should happen with short-term interest rates. Treasury secretaries, which handles debt issuance and tax collection, don't traditionally weigh in on monetary policy, which is left to the Fed. While Bessent has called the Fed's independence on monetary policy a 'jewel box' not to be tampered with, he has also joined President Trump and other administration officials in criticizing the bank's handling of interest rates. Trump has been calling for interest rate cuts since the beginning of the year and has nicknamed Fed Chair Jerome Powell 'Too Late' due to his reluctance to begin cuts this year and the bank's sluggish response to post-pandemic inflation. The Fed has kept interbank lending rates at an effective level of 4.33 percent since January after making three cuts in the back half of last year. The Fed has been waiting to see the effects of tariffs on the economy. Inflation held steady from June to July at a 2.7-percent annual increase in consumer price index (CPI) after ticking up from 2.4 percent in May. The job market slowed down significantly over the past three months, adding just 106,000 jobs from May through July. Asked Wednesday if a half-percent rate cut in September would signal that the fundamentals of the economy are not in good shape, Bessent said the signal would be one of transition. 'That signals that there's an adjustment, and that rates are too constrictive,' he said. FPowell has said recently that he believes interest rates are now 'modestly restrictive,' meaning that inflation-adjusted interest rates are lowering potential profitability and restraining the level of investment. Bessent criticized Powell's reliance and reactivity to incoming data, which the Fed chair has often stressed during his tenure as chair. 'He's not Alan Greenspan, who was very forward-thinking. They try to be more data-driven, which I think is a mistake,' Bessent said. 'It's just very old-fashioned thinking.'

Why the Trump Tariff Merry-Go-Round Won't Stop

Anyone trying to make sense of President Trump's tariffs is missing the point. The conga line of trade negotiators will keep dancing because Mr. Trump will continue to use tariffs to exert dominance, signal threats and make deals. There won't be a new end state. Tariff numbers will keep fluctuating, prices for goods and investments will be unreliable, and agreements won't last. But the damage to America's economy and strategic interests will persist. The president has cited various goals for his disorderly deal-making. He wants to cut bilateral trade deficits, open foreign markets, protect favored U.S. industries and restore manufacturing. He also wants to raise revenue and in some instances simply punish others for a perceived offense. His administration leaps from one rationalization to another to justify the boss's most recent whim. But Mr. Trump won't be pinned down. He believes uncertainty adds to his power and wants the freedom to bully others depending on what has his attention.

Trump's search to replace Fed Chair Powell continues as new report says up to 11 names under consideration

The Trump administration is broadening its search for the next Federal Reserve chair, with reports suggesting as many as 11 candidates may be in the running to replace Jerome Powell when his term expires in May. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is leading the search and interview process for the next Fed chair, said the administration is casting a "very wide net" for candidates. "The president has a very open mind," Bessent told the Fox Business Network on Tuesday. "He even considered Janet, reappointing Janet Yellen [in 2017], so we want to see what everyone's thinking," he said. "It's not ideological. It's about economics, what's best for the American people, what's best for the economy." The broadening search marks an evolution since last week, when Trump said he had narrowed down his list of candidates to three or four people. A report from CNBC on Wednesday morning citing two administration officials said Trump is now weighing up to 11 candidates to replace Powell, including Jefferies chief market strategist David Zervos and BlackRock chief investment officer for global fixed income Rick Rieder. BlackRock had no comment on the report. Unless it comes from President Trump himself, however, any discussion about personnel decisions should be regarded as pure speculation," White House spokesperson Kush Desai told Yahoo Finance. Last week, President Trump suggested in a CNBC interview that the pool of potential nominees to succeed Powell was down to four people, but he said Bessent had asked not to be nominated for the role. The president suggested that both former Fed governor Kevin Warsh and National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett were at the top of the list. When asked about Fed governor Chris Waller, Trump didn't deny that Waller was among the four possible replacements for Powell. Former St. Louis Fed president Jim Bullard, Fed governor Michelle Bowman, Fed vice chair Philip Jefferson, Dallas Fed president Lorie Logan, and former Bush administration official Marc Summerlin, and former Fed governor Larry Lindsey are all also considered to be in the running. Meanwhile, the president nominated Stephen Miran, current chair of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors last week to replace Fed governor Adriana Kugler, who stepped down on Aug. 8. If confirmed by the Senate, Miran's term will run until Jan. 31, 2026. Bessent told Fox Business that Miran's appointment will "change the composition of the Fed" and suggested Miran could be renominated to a full term on the Fed board. He also said that the administration will have two seats on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors to fill, assuming that when Powell's term as Fed chair expires next May, he will also step down from his position on the Board of Governors, which does not end until January 2028. Powell has not said what he plans to do. These changes at the central bank come as markets now expect the Fed to cut interest rates at its September meeting after electing to keep rates unchanged last month. Fed governors Waller and Bowman both voted in favor of a rate cut and later expanded on their views in statements issued in early August. San Francisco Fed president Mary Daly and Minneapolis Fed president Neel Kashkari, neither of whom are voting members of the FOMC in 2025, have also said since the Fed's July 31 announcement that the case for rate cuts has strengthened. Powell's next major public appearance is expected on Aug. 22 at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium.
