Company using renewable energy to power bitcoin operations hits major milestone: 'A critical achievement'
Soluna, a leading developer of sustainable data centers that convert excess renewable energy into computing power for energy-hungry applications — such as bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence — announced that it secured 60 acres of land to build a new 187-megawatt data center in Texas, an important milestone in its expansion efforts.
According to a company news release, the data center, called Project Rosa, will be conveniently co-located next to a 240 MW wind farm, allowing it to directly harness a significant amount of renewable energy. The company said its data centers are always "strategically co-located with wind, solar, or hydroelectric power plants."
"Securing these land agreements is a critical achievement for Soluna," John Belizaire, CEO of Soluna, said in a statement. "Project Rosa not only enhances our operational capacity but also reinforces our commitment to delivering sustainable, cutting-edge solutions in high performance computing."
As Soluna moves closer to bringing the data center online, it will focus on completing the project's first phase, which includes securing definitive power purchase and land agreements. The next step will be hashing out plans for Project Rosa with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, an independent system operator for 90% of the state's electric grid.
While capturing wasted power from solar and wind farms and hydropower plants reduces cryptocurrency's massive pollution footprint and adds capacity to the grid, many crypto transactions consume huge amounts of energy — often derived from dirty fuel sources such as coal, oil, and gas.
According to a United Nations University study, nearly 70% of the electricity used to power bitcoin mining globally in 2020 and 2021 came from dirty energy sources. During this period, the mining process produced more than 85 million metric tons (around 94 million tons) of carbon pollution — equivalent to burning 84 billion pounds of coal, according to the study.
Considering crypto mining uses more electricity than entire countries — including Poland and Egypt — per a University of Cambridge analysis, and demand is only increasing, it's crucial for professional mining companies to lower the environmental impact of crypto and reduce strain on the energy grid.
Soluna says its green data centers are 18% cleaner than traditional ones, signaling a step in the right direction. A new blockchain technology platform, Gigatons, that launched in 2024 could also help decarbonize the digital currency sector. When the cryptocurrency network Ethereum transitioned its platform from a "proof-of-work" consensus mechanism to a "proof-of-stake" system, it reduced its energy use by a staggering 99.95%.
If more and more cryptocurrency platforms turn out to be less energy intensive, the industry may have an easier path to a more sustainable future even within those that still take a lot of energy, as there will be more time for scaling up renewable energy.
For instance, Mara Holdings' recent acquisition of a Texas wind farm for bitcoin mining helps to put a bigger dent in the wider crypto world's energy needs if several other significant platforms do not require as much energy at the same time; there are only so many wind farms in existence or able to be built at one time.
"We are excited to launch Project Rosa and continue our momentum in developing the future with Renewable Computing," Belizaire said in a 2024 Soluna news release. "This project represents a significant increase in our shovel-ready momentum as we grow our HPC and Bitcoin data center business."

Should You Buy Shiba Inu While It's Under $0.01?
Shiba Inu's minuscule price can play mental tricks on investors. The ease of launching meme coins has created an increasingly crowded landscape for Shiba Inu. It can have a place in your crypto portfolio, but set the proper expectations. 10 stocks we like better than Shiba Inu › Shiba Inu (CRYPTO: SHIB) can't seem to catch a bid. The adorable meme coin hasn't joined in the rally that other cryptocurrencies have seen over the past year. Bitcoin has risen 58% over the past year, and XRP is up 365%. Even Dogecoin has gained 32%. Yet, Shiba Inu has dropped 42%. The token's price is currently $0.000013. It creates an interesting proposition for risk-seeking buyers. The cryptocurrency markets have experienced ups and downs, and the friendly stance the Trump Administration has taken toward the crypto space bodes well for investor enthusiasm, which could lift prices across the board. As you can see, that has already happened for multiple digital tokens. Does Shiba Inu have a big move coming? Here is a look at whether investors should consider buying the meme coin while it's still under $0.01. Expanding on the Shiba Inu proposition, it's easy to do the mental gymnastics to paint it in a positive light. One token costs a fraction of a penny. Sometimes, very small or large numbers can lose their significance when they're just numbers on a screen. But the current $0.000013 price means that it would have to increase 1,000-fold to reach $0.013, or over a penny per token. That's not 1,000%. That's 1,000 times its current price. In other words, someone who bought a dollar's worth of Shiba Inu would then have $1,000. The mental trap is that it's easy to think, "Well, if it just goes to a penny, I'll make a ton of money." But as you can see, that's far harder and less likely than it looks on the surface. Even at the peak of the zero-percent interest rate bubble in 2020-2021, the price reached its all-time high of only $0.00008845. Revisiting that high would mean a nearly sevenfold return from today's price. So, if investors set their sights on Shiba Inu revisiting its all-time highs, a far more likely goal, how likely is that? Well, that's where the conversation gets a bit complicated. It's essential to remember that it's a meme coin, generally not intended for numerous real-world applications. Instead, meme coins are best thought of as a cryptocurrency to build a community around. That doesn't mean that it's useless; quite the contrary. Shiba Inu utilizes the Ethereum blockchain network, which enables it to leverage smart-contract functionality and compatibility with the world's largest blockchain. However, that hasn't translated into much developer support. Therefore, the crypto relies on popularity to drive demand, which in turn influences its price. However, it continues to face an increasingly crowded field and is currently the 19th-largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization of $7.8 billion. Almost anyone can launch a meme coin, which essentially means that there are low barriers to entry for competing for investor attention. To completely dismiss Shiba Inu would go against the spirit of meme coins. It's fine to buy it as long as you understand that it's for fun and do so as a tiny component of a diversified portfolio built with more-serious assets. In other words, this is not something you buy hoping to build a retirement with. The volatility of cryptocurrencies might even work in your favor, and if Shiba Inu's price spikes and you make money, then great! It's just unlikely to reach $0.01. Setting the proper expectations before investing your hard-earned money will save you a lot of emotional strife and ensure you appreciate meme coins for the fun and community they create. Coinbase to Launch Bitcoin Rewards Card With Amex, While Eyeing U.S. Futures Expansion
Crypto exchange Coinbase is planning to launch a credit card that offers bitcoin BTC cashback, the company said on Thursday. The Coinbase One Card, issued in partnership with American Express, includes perks such as earning 4% in BTC after purchases, boosted rewards on USDC stablecoin holdings and higher staking rewards and transaction credits on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network developed by the exchange, according to the card's website. The card's rollout is expected this fall. The move comes as more crypto platforms and exchanges are rolling out payment cards to enable users to spend their blockchain-based token stash on everyday purchases. For example, self-custodial wallet MetaMask introduced its debit card last year, while Mastercard unveiled plans in April to launch debit cards with crypto exchanges OKX and Kraken. It's also not the first crypto endeavour for Amex, either: the company issued a credit card offering crypto rewards with Abra in 2022. Coinbase's announcement coincided with the company's State of Crypto Summit event in New York, where the exchange also hinted at expanding perpetual futures trading to the U.S., according to media reports. Perps trading has been limited to non-U.S. users at Coinbase Advance. However, the exchange said earlier this year in a blog post that it was working with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) towards making "perpetual-style futures contracts" accessible to U.S. users.
