Company using renewable energy to power bitcoin operations hits major milestone: 'A critical achievement'

Yahoo08-04-2025
Soluna, a leading developer of sustainable data centers that convert excess renewable energy into computing power for energy-hungry applications — such as bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence — announced that it secured 60 acres of land to build a new 187-megawatt data center in Texas, an important milestone in its expansion efforts.
According to a company news release, the data center, called Project Rosa, will be conveniently co-located next to a 240 MW wind farm, allowing it to directly harness a significant amount of renewable energy. The company said its data centers are always "strategically co-located with wind, solar, or hydroelectric power plants."
"Securing these land agreements is a critical achievement for Soluna," John Belizaire, CEO of Soluna, said in a statement. "Project Rosa not only enhances our operational capacity but also reinforces our commitment to delivering sustainable, cutting-edge solutions in high performance computing."
As Soluna moves closer to bringing the data center online, it will focus on completing the project's first phase, which includes securing definitive power purchase and land agreements. The next step will be hashing out plans for Project Rosa with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, an independent system operator for 90% of the state's electric grid.
While capturing wasted power from solar and wind farms and hydropower plants reduces cryptocurrency's massive pollution footprint and adds capacity to the grid, many crypto transactions consume huge amounts of energy — often derived from dirty fuel sources such as coal, oil, and gas.
According to a United Nations University study, nearly 70% of the electricity used to power bitcoin mining globally in 2020 and 2021 came from dirty energy sources. During this period, the mining process produced more than 85 million metric tons (around 94 million tons) of carbon pollution — equivalent to burning 84 billion pounds of coal, according to the study.
Considering crypto mining uses more electricity than entire countries — including Poland and Egypt — per a University of Cambridge analysis, and demand is only increasing, it's crucial for professional mining companies to lower the environmental impact of crypto and reduce strain on the energy grid.
Soluna says its green data centers are 18% cleaner than traditional ones, signaling a step in the right direction. A new blockchain technology platform, Gigatons, that launched in 2024 could also help decarbonize the digital currency sector. When the cryptocurrency network Ethereum transitioned its platform from a "proof-of-work" consensus mechanism to a "proof-of-stake" system, it reduced its energy use by a staggering 99.95%.
If more and more cryptocurrency platforms turn out to be less energy intensive, the industry may have an easier path to a more sustainable future even within those that still take a lot of energy, as there will be more time for scaling up renewable energy.
For instance, Mara Holdings' recent acquisition of a Texas wind farm for bitcoin mining helps to put a bigger dent in the wider crypto world's energy needs if several other significant platforms do not require as much energy at the same time; there are only so many wind farms in existence or able to be built at one time.
"We are excited to launch Project Rosa and continue our momentum in developing the future with Renewable Computing," Belizaire said in a 2024 Soluna news release. "This project represents a significant increase in our shovel-ready momentum as we grow our HPC and Bitcoin data center business."

Got $500? 2 Cryptocurrencies to Buy and Hold for Decades

Key Points Spot crypto ETFs are one way for investors to get exposure to cryptocurrency at much lower prices. For just $500, it's possible to put together a blended portfolio of Bitcoin and Ethereum using only ETFs. Together, Bitcoin and Ethereum account for nearly 75% of the value of the crypto market and should be the two linchpins of any portfolio. 10 stocks we like better than iShares Bitcoin Trust › Invest in Gold American Hartford Gold: #1 Precious Metals Dealer in the Nation Priority Gold: Up to $15k in Free Silver + Zero Account Fees on Qualifying Purchase Thor Metals Group: Best Overall Gold IRA It's understandable why many first-time crypto investors experience sticker shock when they start thinking of investing in the crypto market. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is now trading for almost $120,000. And Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), the world's second-largest cryptocurrency, is now trading for more than $4,000. However, there's an easy, no-brainer way to gain exposure to both of these top cryptocurrencies for $500 and still have some money left over. Here's how to do it. Spot crypto ETFs If you choose to invest directly in the crypto market, $500 will only get you about .004 BTC or .1 ETH. There's nothing wrong, of course, with holding fractional amounts of these cryptocurrencies. But there's admittedly something very satisfying about owning full amounts of anything. And that includes crypto. Thus, one option might be to explore the new spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs). There are now plenty of choices for both Bitcoin and Ethereum, but most investors tend to gravitate to the spot crypto ETFs from BlackRock (NYSE: BLK). For Bitcoin, that's the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ: IBIT), and for Ethereum, it's the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (NASDAQ: ETHA). Both of these ETFs are designed to track the price performance of the underlying cryptocurrency. If Bitcoin goes up by 10%, the price of the ETF should go up 10% as well. Thus, owning these spot crypto ETFs is tantamount to owning the underlying cryptocurrency. Instead of buying them in the crypto market, you can gain access to them as easily as any other publicly traded ETF or stock. That makes them perfect for gaining access to Bitcoin and Ethereum at dramatically reduced prices. For example, the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF is now trading for about $67, while the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF is now trading for $33. Of course, you don't have to choose the BlackRock ETFs. You could just as easily pair up Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs from other asset managers. Putting $500 to work in crypto If you have $500, you can very easily create a blended Bitcoin-Ethereum portfolio. The easiest way to do this is by comparing the market caps of the top cryptocurrencies to the total value of the crypto market (which is currently about $4 trillion) and using that to come up with the optimal weighting for each. Bitcoin, with a market cap of about $2.4 trillion, accounts for almost 60% of the total market cap of crypto. Ethereum, with a market cap of $530 billion, accounts for roughly 13% of the market cap of crypto. Smaller cryptocurrencies make up the rest. For example, XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) chips in another 5%, while Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) adds another 2.5%. Thus, if you were looking for a diversified crypto portfolio, you would likely start with a mix of 60% Bitcoin, 13% Ethereum, 5% XRP, and 2.5% Solana. From there, you can either ratchet up or down your Bitcoin and Ethereum allocations, or add in several other cryptocurrencies. Since most investors are only focused on the top cryptocurrencies, one option would be a 70% Bitcoin, 30% Ethereum blend. It's relatively easy to achieve the desired blend with the ETFs. Of the $500, use $350 to buy about five shares of the iShares Bitcoin Trust and $140 to buy four shares of the iShares Ethereum Trust. Plus, there's $10 left over. You could easily put that to work by scooping up three XRP tokens (at a cost of roughly $10), or putting that money into dollar-pegged stablecoins while you wait for new investment opportunities. This might sound relatively simplistic, and to a certain degree, it is. But it's also the same strategy that diversified crypto ETFs are using today. For example, Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT) plans to launch a new crypto ETF -- the Truth Social Crypto Blue Chip ETF -- that includes a mix of different cryptocurrencies. The desired mix is 70% Bitcoin, 15% Ethereum, 8% Solana, and 2% XRP. Buy and hold for decades The best part about a crypto ETF strategy is that you can buy and hold Bitcoin and Ethereum for decades. In contrast, if you start moving money into riskier, more speculative cryptocurrencies, you likely won't be holding them for long. For first-time crypto investors, I can't think of a better approach than to focus on just Bitcoin and Ethereum, and use low-cost ETFs to get exposure to them. Depending on your overall risk tolerance, your desired blend might change, but it's safe to say that Bitcoin should account for the lion's share of your total crypto exposure. SharpLink Stock Dives After Q2 Loss as Ethereum Price Surge Cools

SharpLink Gaming's shares plummeted Friday as the online gambling marketer disclosed disappointing earnings for the second financial quarter. The Ethereum treasury's shares are trading at $20.04, down nearly 15% in intraday trading. SharpLink reported $103 million in net losses for the three-month period ending on June 30—a stark contrast to its nearly $12 million net income during the same quarter last year. Revenue came in at $1.4 million for the second quarter, down 30% from the same time last year. The company clocked $0.3 million gross profit, marking a 50% decrease from the first half of last year. The report marks SharpLink's first earnings report since the firm announced its pivot to an Ethereum-centered corporate strategy in May. SharpLink's executives attributed the recent losses to a $87.8 million non-cash impairment loss on its LSE holdings, a tokenized version of staked ETH that allows holders to use their tokens while earning rewards for locking them up on the Ethereum network. They also pointed to stock-based compensation linked to their strategic advisory agreement with blockchain infrastructure firm Consensys worth $16.4 million. (Disclosure: Consensys is one of 22 investors in an editorially independent Decrypt.) 'So there's no confusion for our investors, I want to state plainly that this… is a non-cash loss and is a result of the company following the current accounting practices,' SharpLink Gaming Chief Financial Officer Robert DeLucia said Friday on an earnings call with analysts. Ethereum ETF Inflows Outpace Bitcoin ETFs for Fifth Straight Day The company's lackluster earnings came as Ethereum's price slid below $4,400 earlier Friday, just a day after coming within striking distance of its record price of more than $4,800. The retracement followed a hotter-than-expected producer-price index report and amid handwringing over U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. SharpLink currently holds 728,804 ETH. The tokens are worth a combined $3.23 billion as of writing time, according to data provider CoinGecko. Ethereum is trading at $4,444 as of writing time, down 2.2% over the past 24 hours, the same data shows. Altcoin Season Could Begin in September as Bitcoin's Grip on Crypto Market Weakens: Coinbase Institutional

Altcoin season may be weeks away, according to Coinbase Institutional's latest monthly outlook, which forecasts a shift in market leadership from bitcoin to alternative cryptocurrencies beginning in September. Altcoin season refers to a market phase when cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin — often led by Ethereum's ETH, Solana's SOL, and other large-cap tokens — post significantly higher percentage gains than BTC over a sustained period. The Aug. 14 report, authored by David Duong, Coinbase's global head of research, identifies three main drivers: falling bitcoin market dominance, improving liquidity and growing investor willingness to rotate into higher-beta assets. Duong frames this as a cyclical transition, with capital moving down the risk curve as market confidence builds. Bitcoin dominance — its share of total crypto market value — has shown signs of softening after peaking earlier this year. Coinbase argues that as this measure declines, capital historically flows into large-cap altcoins, and then into mid- and small-cap names. This rotation effect, they suggest, will become more pronounced in September. Liquidity trends are also turning more favorable for altcoins. Coinbase notes tighter bid-ask spreads and deeper order books across major exchanges, making it easier for traders to enter and exit altcoin positions without incurring heavy slippage. Improved liquidity often encourages participation from larger players who might otherwise avoid less-traded tokens. The third factor is sentiment. Duong writes that as macro conditions stabilize and volatility remains contained, investors are more likely to seek higher returns in riskier crypto assets. This environment could foster sustained inflows into the altcoin market, particularly if bitcoin's price consolidates rather than surges to new highs. Coinbase stops short of predicting which tokens will lead the charge but highlights the pattern from previous market cycles, where blue-chip altcoins outperformed first, followed by smaller-cap assets. The report cautions that while September may mark the start, the duration and magnitude of the move will depend on both market and macroeconomic conditions. BTC is up 27.2% year-to-date but has trailed some major altcoins such as ETH (+37.9%) and XRP (+49%), while others like SOL (+1.67%), ADA (+8.96%) and DOGE (-27.5%) have lagged. Coinbase maintains that market conditions overall could favor a broader rotation into altcoins in the coming months.
