Rodri will not make Manchester City return till September - World

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
Manchester City midfielder Rodri will not be at full fitness until after September's international break, Pep Guardiola has revealed.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner missed most of last season due to ligament damage and without him City failed to mount a strong defence of their Premier League crown.
The 29-year-old Spanish international fought his way back to fitness but suffered a groin injury in City's defeat to Saudi club Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup in the United States last month.
"Rodri's getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal and for the last five or six weeks," Guardiola said in comments released on Saturday.
"He's training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really, really fit.
"Hopefully, in the games (prior to that) he can play some minutes but the important thing is to not have pain because we don't want him to be come back and injured, come back and injured.
"We will try desperately to avoid that but he's training the last two or three days with us and that's good."
The City staff are also nursing Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic back to fitness and both players joined Rodri in being left out of a pre-season game in Sicily this week.
City face Wolves in their first Premier League game of the season next weekend and then play Tottenham and Brighton before the September internationals.

Tennis: Swiatek advances by walkover into Cincinnati fourth round - Omni sports

Wimbledon winner Iga Swiatek of Poland advanced to the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open on Sunday as upcoming opponent Marta Kostyuk was forced to withdraw. The 27th-ranked Ukrainian cited a right wrist injury for the pullout, which came a day after six-time Grand Slam winner Swiatek, seeded third, advanced to the third round with the loss of just five games. Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 Roland Garros champion, also benefited from a walkover as Camila Osorio withdrew with an abdominal injury. Slot seeks Liverpool balance for Premier League defence - World

Liverpool boss Arne Slot said his side are conceding too often if they are to defend the Premier League title after losing the Community Shield on penalties to Crystal Palace on Sunday. The new-look Reds, after a £260 million ($350 million) spending spree in the transfer market, looked slick in attack at Wembley with new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong on target. However, the Reds twice failed to hold onto the lead as Palace levelled through Jean-Philippe Mateta's penalty and Ismaila Sarr's strike 13 minutes from time as the match ended 2-2 before the shootout. Last season Liverpool beat Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park and drew 1-1 on the final day of the season at Anfield as they romped to the title with four games to spare. Slot saw flashes of what his star-studded forward line are capable of as the most expensive of his new recruits, Florian Wirtz, teed up Ekitike for the opening goal after just four minutes. However, in keeping with the pattern of Liverpool's pre-season friendlies, they were cut open with ease on the counter-attack. AC Milan beat Slot's men 4-2 in Hong Kong, while Liverpool edged out Athletic Bilbao 3-2 in one of two friendlies against the Basques on their return to Anfield on Monday. "If you look at our attacking play against a team that is so compact, that might be a bit better than last season," said Slot. "We only could score one goal against Palace (last season). Now we scored two and created more against them. "But, on the other hand, we conceded two goals, which we did against Bilbao, and we conceded a couple more against Milan, so that is something we need to do better." Only Arsenal had a better defensive record than Liverpool in the Premier League last season and Slot is keen to rectify his side's issues before they begin their title defence at home to Bournemouth on Friday. "We are able to create more but we are conceding at the moment more as well. If you want to compete to win the league, you cannot concede these chances. "We conceded too much today to win the game." Liverpool's spending in the transfer market may not be over as they continue to be linked with a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. However, Slot dismissed the claim that the transfer spending will put his players under more pressure this season. "Because we are Liverpool the pressure is always on," he said. "That is nothing to do with brining players in." (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) UN Rapporteur Albanese urges UEFA to expel Israel from its competitions

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has called on Europe's football governing body, UEFA, to expel Israel from its competitions following the killing of Suleiman al-Obeid, a Palestinian footballer known as the "Palestinian Pele," who was shot dead by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip. "Time to expel its killers from competitions, UEFA," Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, posted on X. "Let's make sport apartheid and genocide free. One ball, one kick at a time," she added. Albanese's call came after the killing of former Palestine international Suleiman al-Obeid, 41, in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday. According to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), Israeli forces "targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid," killing the retired Palestinian footballer. Francesca Albanese is one of the most outspoken critics of Israel's war of extermination and starvation in the Gaza Strip. She has faced sanctions from both the United States and Israel, yet remains steadfast in her principled stance in support of the Palestinian people and in calling for an end to the Israeli occupation. Born in Gaza City, Obeid was married and had five children. He played 24 international matches for Palestine's team. His death added to the mounting toll of sports figures and civilians killed amidst the ongoing genocidal Israeli war on Gaza. Liverpool Egyptian international star Mohamed Salah has criticised UEFA for posting a tribute to al-Obeid that did not mention the former international died after being hit by Israeli gunfire in Gaza. UEFA on Friday issued a brief message on X, paying homage to al-Obeid, with a statement that read: "Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pele'. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times." However, Salah found the tribute insufficient, with the Liverpool forward responding publicly, questioning, "Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?" Salah then shared a screenshot of UEFA's post on his Instagram account, with over 65 million followers, escalating the pressure on international sports bodies to clarify the circumstances of al-Obeid's death. Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, Israel's army has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, including 662 people from the sport and scouting sector — 321 of them from the football community — according to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA).
