Karen Weekly discusses college softball tampering, NIL

Karen Weekly discusses college softball tampering, NIL Tennessee softball lost a student-athlete to the NCAA transfer portal following the 2025 season. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Pannell committed to Texas Tech on Thursday. She appeared in 124 games, including 122 starts, for the Lady Vols from 2023-25. Following Pannell's transfer, Tennessee head coach Karen Weekly discussed the NCAA transfer portal and NIL on a social media post Friday. "I think we can all agree on 2 things: 1) women making money in sports is awesome and long overdue; 2) contacting players (directly or indirectly) before their season ends and signing them to NIL deals before they enter the portal is wrong," Weekly said. "Money isn't the issue - tampering is!" Pannell recorded a .351 batting average, 25 home runs, 102 RBIs, 83 runs, 124 hits, 44 walks and 11 stolen bases in three seasons at Tennessee. The Lady Vols advanced to the Women's College World Series in 2023 and 2025, while winning the SEC regular-season championship from 2023-24 and the league's tournament title in 2023. Minnesota women's coach Dawn Plitzuweit gets two-year contract extension with raise

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota women's basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit has received a two-year contract extension that was approved Thursday by the university's board of regents. Plitzuweit is 47-29 over two seasons at Minnesota, including 13-23 in Big Ten play, with leading scorer Mara Braun missing much of them with foot injuries. The Gophers capped Plitzuweit's second year by winning the WBIT championship. They have not appeared in the NCAA Tournament since 2018. The new deal, which covers the next six seasons through 2031, gives Plitzuweit a raise of roughly 7% to bring her base salary to $900,000 for 2025-26, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune, with annual increases of $30,000. That's in the middle of the pack in the 18-team Big Ten, which sent 12 of them to the NCAA Tournament this year. Plitzuweit was hired away from West Virginia, where she spent one season, to replace Lindsay Whalen. Plitzuweit is the 13th head coach in the program's history.

USC star Ethan Hedges named second-team All-American by Perfect Game USA

USC star Ethan Hedges named second-team All-American by Perfect Game USA After a remarkable season, USC baseball star Ethan Hedges is officially an All-American. On Wednesday, Hedges earned second-team All-American honors from Perfect Game USA. Hedges excelled on both sides of the ball this season. As the Trojans' starting third baseman, he led the team with a .346 batting average, 1.081 OPS, 80 hits, 58 RBIs, and 14 home runs. In addition, he pitched for the first time since he was in high school, serving as the Trojans' closer. In 15 appearances, he posted a 2.40 ERA, going 2-1 with nine saves. Hedges becomes USC's first All-American since Ben Wanger during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He is the first Trojan to earn such honors in a full season since Chris Clarke in 2019. Thanks largely to Hedges' incredible season, USC qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. The Trojans made it to the final of the Corvallis Regional, where they fell to Oregon State. At this point, it is still unknown whether or not Hedges will be back at USC next year. After a season as strong as his, Hedges has a very good chance to hear his name called in July's MLB Draft. If he does return to the Trojans in 2026, however, Hedges should enter the season as one of the top players in the country, with a chance to accomplish even bigger things than he did this season.
