Four killed in R23 accident in Balfour
A devastating head-on collision claimed four lives on the R23 between Balfour and Greylingstad on Monday night, April 28. The accident involved two sedans and a double cab Ford Ranger.
The sedan that collided with the bakkie was towing the other sedan. The spokesperson of the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, said the sedan that was being towed was not damaged and its driver was unharmed.
Four men, two drivers and two passengers, died while another passenger in the bakkie was slightly injured. 'He received medical treatment at Suikerbosrand Life Care Hospital in Heidelberg before being discharged,' Mmusi said.

He added that the circumstances surrounding the crash are still unclear, but an investigation to determine the cause is in progress. The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Jackie Macie, extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

R100k reward to catch fugitive linked to missing Sodwana skipper
IN a bid to bring justice to the family of missing, presumed murdered, Sodwana Bay skipper John 'Matambu' Dercksen, an avid angler and friend of the missing fisherman has posted a hefty reward. According to Eilertsen's post, charges against Visser for the Nelspruit matter include house break-in with intent to commit crime; assault; and sexual offences. Gauteng unveils high-tech, tamper-proof number plates
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has officially unveiled a new high-tech, tamper-proof provincial number plate system. The new intelligent number plate system is a secure, traceable and smart solution, incorporating tamper-evident decals, forensic QR codes and a fully digitised back-end portal. These technological enhancements are designed to combat vehicle theft, fraud and cloning, while improving road safety and empowering traffic law enforcement across the province. Speaking at the launch of the new plates on Thursday, Lesufi said the new system is a major step forward in the fight against criminality in the province. 'We are letting go of the old ways of fighting crime and introducing new ideas in this fight. With the help of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, we are now deploying a digital system that ensures we are able to account for every vehicle on our public roads. 'Those who are using fraudulent or duplicate number plates will have no space or time to drive on our roads,' he said at the launch held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg. The province has launched a high-calibre 'weapon' in the fight against criminality and restoring order, he said. Rollout and combating crime The system will be piloted using g-Fleet vehicles affixed with the technologically advanced new number plates as part of the six-month stress testing project, before the provincial rollout. This system is set to drastically improve the credibility of number plates and enable license plate tracking within the value chain, from manufacturer to the vehicle owner. Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela highlighted that the launch represented a strategic provincial intervention to combat crime effectively and strengthen regulatory compliance. She added that this is an important pillar in the broader Provincial Integrated Crime Prevention Strategy. 'By partnering with law enforcement agencies, metro police departments and the private sector, we are enhancing vehicle identification and traceability. 'These smart number plates will significantly reduce vehicle cloning, trafficking of stolen vehicles, and the use of falsified plates in criminal activities. It is about disrupting criminal networks and improving road safety,' the MEC said. Meanwhile, as part of efforts to bolster traffic law enforcement, the Gauteng Provincial Government welcomed 96 officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation. These additional 'boots on the ground' officers will enhance visibility and strengthen crime-fighting efforts in the province. Limpopo police bust truck smuggling stolen goods to Malawi
Limpopo police struck a decisive blow against transnational crime, intercepting a highly organised smuggling syndicate transporting stolen goods from Cape Town to Malawi. At around 2:00 on Thursday, 5 June, the Limpopo Anti-Smuggling Task Team, working with Tshimollo Security and Investigation and Shadow Secure Technology, stopped a Scania truck with superlink trailers near the Polokwane weighbridge. The truck, believed to be part of a broader criminal network exploiting the Beitbridge border post, was found carrying a staggering cache of stolen items following an 18-hour search operation. 'This breakthrough represents a major victory against sophisticated criminal networks that have been exploiting our borders to traffic stolen goods,' said Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe. Stolen Goods Reveal Chopped Cars and Bikes Investigators uncovered chopped parts of a Ford Ranger stolen in Nyanga, including critical components like the engine and dashboard. Sixty disassembled motorcycles, hidden in drums and containers, were traced to thefts from at least seven police precincts across the Western Cape, such as Bellville, Muizenberg, and Sea Point. Electronic goods suspected to have been stolen, including plasma televisions, sound systems, solar tower batteries, and cell phones, were also added to the haul. All were concealed in an elaborate smuggling setup designed to pass undetected through one of the busiest trade routes in southern Africa. 'The collaboration between our Anti-Smuggling Task Team and private security partners demonstrates the power of coordinated law enforcement efforts,' Hadebe noted. The total value of the recovered goods is estimated to exceed R3 million. Four Suspects to Face Justice Four foreign nationals, aged between 37 and 50, were arrested at the scene. They are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday, 9 June, to face charges related to possession of suspected stolen goods. Authorities have also seized the truck and trailers involved, treating the vehicle as key evidence in an ongoing investigation into cross-border smuggling syndicates. Hadebe assured the public, 'We will continue to target these criminal syndicates relentlessly until they are completely dismantled.'
