Savannah Bananas star falls hard on his face while attempting backflip live on CNN: 'Oh, Jesus'
Kate Bolduan and John Berman watched in horror as RobertAnthony Cruz hit his mouth and chin on the CNN stage. A Savannah Banana just peeled off a bit of his face after a backflip gone wrong on a live CNN segment. RobertAnthony Cruz — also known by the name Coach RAC when he performs on the field with the Harlem Globetrotters-style exhibition sports troupe — appeared Thursday morning on the CNN News Central program, where he attempted to vault backwards into the air and land on his feet. Footage shared to social media (below) shows Cruz take his stance as anchor Kate Bolduan exclaims, "Oh, Jesus," just before he flips. Cruz then jumps into the air and lands hard on his face, leading to a few moments of stunned silence while he collects himself, and broadcast journalist John Berman tries to recover the segment. "That, what you just saw there, is a brand-new twist on America's favorite pastime," Berman says in the footage. When reached, a CNN spokesperson tells Entertainment Weekly via email that they're "glad he's okay and taking it in such stride," as Cruz later posted a video explanation to his social media followers. "Your boy's bouncing around the internet like a beach ball at a Nickelback concert," Cruz says in his video, in which he also reveals that he performed the segment on about four hours of sleep. He added that he spent the last four days coaching baseball for around 500 kids in Houston, before boarding a plan to New York City at 2 a.m. in order to make the live appearance. Cruz then elaborated on what happened leading up to the tumble. "So, we're backstage, and they ask me, 'Hey, you got any tricks up your sleeve that you want to do while we're live on the show?'" and said that it was his decision to do the backflip, as he's performed the trick "tens of thousands" of times in the past — including during a recent ESPN appearance that saw him catch a football in the air while doing a backflip. Cruz remembered sending the flip into the air, but "the next thing I know, I'm on the floor and I'm rattled," he explained. "I was pretty confused. My mic pack fell out of my pocket, my shoe flew off of my foot. I don't even know how that happened. I feel bad for the news anchors because they just sat there like, Okay, we're not supposed to laugh, but oh my gosh, that was funny," Cruz observed. "They just had to carry on. I'm so sorry, you guys!" Throughout the video, Cruz's lip appears bloody, which he said he also noticed shortly after he collided with the stage floor and wound up getting several stitches in his face. "Then, I see the blood dripping down from my chin and my lips, and I'm like, Okay, never mind, this day is probably canned," Cruz said, adding that an on-set doctor helped clean him up. "Obviously, I'm embarrassed," he continued and said that he "lost where I was in the air" due to bright lighting on the set. The Savannah Bananas are next set to perform a three-day set in Norfolk, Va., through July 26, before heading to Philadelphia for their next round of matches. Lifelong Fan of Princess Diana Mortgages Home Four Times to Purchase Items Connected to Royal
A chance encounter at age 12 with Princess Diana set Renae Plant on her lifelong mission to assemble a veritable museum of the late style icon's most memorable outfits. In fact, Renae mortgaged her home for the fourth time to secure 35 items connected to Di at the recent Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection sale in L.A., held by Julien's Auctions. She bid nearly $700,000 on a single dress: the famous Caring Dress (pictured), which the People's Princess wore during her second Australian tour in 1988. Renae's love for the late princess began with their run-in during Diana's first Australian tour in 1983. Renae skipped school to go to a factory in Yandina, Queensland, Australia, where Diana and then-Prince Charles were touring. Renae was shocked when Di saw her, made a bee-line and shook her hand. 'I was so enamored when I saw her … she was so beautiful,' recalls Renae, now 54. Mesmerized, the young girl ducked under a barricade and walked behind a procession of guards and ladies in waiting. It was then she noticed Diana had dropped a clay platypus someone had given her. 'I ran over to the police and said, 'Lady Di dropped this,'' Renae shares. 'He looked at me and said, 'She must have dropped this to give to you.' That tiny platypus sent me on a trajectory I could never have imagined.' All of the Diana items Renae has acquired over the years can be seen online at The Princess & The Platypus Foundation's Princess Diana Museum, named after Renae's run-in with Di, of course. Today, the museum contains 'tens and tens of millions' of dollars' worth of items. The roughly 2,730 pieces include the 1991 Versace dress Di wore on the cover of Harper's Bazaar and a pair of stunning diamond-and-pearl earrings given to the princess by Queen Elizabeth herself. Renae's recent auction win also includes the famed Falcon Dress, a custom cream silk crepe embroidered evening gown designed by Catherine Walker and worn by Diana on her 1986 Gulf Tour. The Di devotee is glad to have added the items to her collection. 'I feel so blessed to be able to preserve Diana's legacy,' Renae says. 'I truly believe she was looking over us. Last Surviving Cast Member of 'Hogan's Heroes' Passes Away at 89 originally appeared on Parade. Kenneth Washington, best known for his starring role on CBS's classic sitcom Hogan's Heroes, passed away on July 18. At the time of his death, the late actor was 89-years-old. Born on October 19, 1935, Washington first entered the entertainment industry in the mid 1950s. Though he occasionally ventured into film with movies like the Jerry Lewis comedy Hook, Line & Sinker or 1973's Westworld, the actor would become more readily known for his roles on television, including guest appearances in Star Trek, Petticoat Junction and I Dream of Jeannie. After making his television debut on the family drama Daktari, Washington went to make eight appearances as police officer Miller in the NBC police drama, Adam-12. Following this, he was cast in a lead role in CBS's Hogan's Heroes, a fan-favorite sitcom following a group of WW2 Allied POWs in an Axis prison camp. In the context of the show, Washington portrayed the character of Sergeant Richard Baker. Succeeding Staff Sergeant James "Kinch" Kinchloe's place after actor Ivan Dixon left the series following its fifth season, Baker acted as the main underground radio operator of the camp and Colonel Robert Hogan's (Bob Crane) de facto second in command. Sadly, Washington's role in the series would last for only a single year, with CBS electing to cancel Hogan's Heroes after its sixth season aired on the network. Following his time on the series, Washington continued to work in television for the remaining two decades, guest starring in episodes of Police Story, The Rockford Files and A Different World before his retirement in 1989. On July 18, he was found to have passed away at his home in Beverly Hills, California. Washington is survived by his wife Alice Marshall; his siblings Johnnie and Aaliyah Akbar; his three children (Kim Lee, Kenneth Jr. and Quianna Stokes-Washington); his three grandchildren; and his four great-grandchildren.
