Barack and Michelle Obama address divorce rumors

NBC News16-07-2025
The Obamas are laughing off divorce rumors.
Barack Obama and Michelle Obama playfully addressed headlines about their marriage during a July 14 episode of Michelle Obama's 'IMO' podcast.
At the start of the show, Michelle Obama revealed that she had a 'very special' guest joining her and her brother, Craig Robinson, who also is a co-host on the podcast.
When they revealed that the guest was none other than Barack Obama, the former U.S president entered the room. He gave Michelle Obama a hug and kiss on the cheek, which made Robinson crack a joke.
'Wait, you guys like each other?' he said.
'That's the rumor mill,' Michelle Obama replied.
As he was taking his seat, Barack Obama joked, 'She took me back. It was touch and go for a while.'
Michelle Obama then warned her hubby not to 'start,' but once everyone was settled in their seats, Robinson said, 'It's so nice to have you both in the same room together,' which made Michelle Obama address the divorce rumors.
'I know, because when we aren't, folks think we're divorced,' she said.
Robinson said that people approach him on the street to ask about his sister's marriage to the former president. He described an encounter in Wichita, Kansas where a woman asked, 'What did he do?' about Barack Obama.
'I said, 'What makes you think he messed up?' Why couldn't it have been her?' he said.
Michelle Obama interjected and said, 'Why didn't you just say, 'No one messed up.''
'I wanted to keep this conversation going so I could tell you about it,' Robinson said.
Eventually Robinson told the woman everything was fine between the Obamas. 'She was so happy you would've thought I gave her a Christmas gift,' he said.
Barack Obama, meanwhile, said these are the headlines he'll 'just miss.'
'Then someone will mention it to me and I'm like, 'What are you talking about?'' he said.
That's when Michelle Obama stepped in to clear up any confusion about her marriage.
'There hasn't been one moment in our marriage where I have thought about quitting on my man,' she said. 'And we've had some really hard times. We've had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures. I've become a better person because of the man I'm married to.'
'OK, don't make me cry now,' Barack Obama interjected. 'Not at the beginning of the show.'
Barack and Michelle Obama have been married since 1992 and share two daughters, Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24.
During an April appearance on the ' Work in Progress with Sophia Bush' podcast, Michelle Obama said she believes the divorce rumors started once she started to make her own schedule.
Notably, she did not join Barack Obama at the funeral for former President Jimmy Carter in January, nor did she go to President Donald Trump's inauguration.
'The interesting thing is that, when I say 'no,' for the most part people are like, 'I get it, and I'm OK,'' she said. 'That's the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with disappointing people. So much so that this year people were — they couldn't even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.'

Like an open book! Joy for Nicola Sturgeon as she receives advance copy of her memoir

It has been controversially billed as a political memoir to rival that of Barack Obama. And yesterday former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon looked delighted as she took delivery of advance copies of her forthcoming book. Ms Sturgeon's memoirs, entitled 'Frankly', will be launched on August 14 at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. The book, for which she received an advance of £300,000, promises to be a 'personal and revealing memoir'. The 55-year-old posted pictures of herself with the first hard copies of the book on social media site Instagram yesterday. Amazon describes the book as: 'Full of the verve and wit that made Sturgeon one of the most high-profile politicians in the UK, this is a unique blend of personal insight and captivating vignettes. 'Infused throughout with a love of Scotland and its people, it honestly discusses Sturgeon's mistakes, her battles, and her triumphs.' But a quote on Amazon from the author Andrew O'Hagan hailing the book as 'a triumph' and 'the interior life of our generation' was recently ridiculed after he added: 'Frankly is the most insightful and stylishly open memoir by a politician since Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father.' Critics have previously said that her track record of failing to recall key information during inquiries into the Alex Salmond affair, Covid and the ferries fiasco meant that the book will need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Later, she told the UK Covid Inquiry she had deleted her WhatsApp exchanges about Covid in line with policy. In a social media post earlier this year, Ms Sturgeon said: 'I have poured my heart into this book, it tells the story of my personal journey, it recounts the extraordinary events that I have been privileged to live and to lead through.' It came as it was revealed that Ms Sturgeon will give an 'in-depth' interview ahead of the launch of her memoir, broadcasters have revealed. The former First Minister will be interviewed by ITV News next month just days before her book is published on August 14. The 55-year-old will be interviewed by ITV News at Ten presenter, Julie Etchingham. Ms Etchingham said: 'Nicola Sturgeon is quite simply one of the stand-out politicians of a generation. From her rise as a working class girl to the pinnacle of Scottish politics as first female First Minister, she has charted dizzying political heights to being hailed the most dangerous woman in Britain. 'In what I hope will be a revealing encounter, I can't wait to see how Nicola Sturgeon lifts the lid on her politics, life and legacy - and to find out where she heads next.' The special programme, which will be aired as part of ITV News on August 11 at 7pm, will focus on the former SNP leader's 'successes and controversies, highpoints and setbacks, personal insights and political flashpoints'.

Trump ally denies Obama 'Russia hoax' probe is Epstein diversion

A top Senate ally of President Donald Trump was asked Sunday if C ongressional pressure to investigate former President Barack Obama over the 2016 ' Russia hoax' was a way to divert from the public's demands to release the Epstein files. During an appearance on Meet The Press, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham was asked by host Kristen Welker if the GOP calls for investigation into former President Obama was a way to steer public interest away from the Epstein files. This comes as voters are not happy with Trump's handing of the files, with only 16% of respondents to a recent Emerson College poll saying that they approve 'of the Trump administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.' Emerson College Polling director Spencer Kimball noted Thursday that the Epstein files issue was the one Trump fared the worst on. 'Are you trying to rewrite history to distract from the Epstein matter, Senator?' Welker asked Graham. 'No. I am trying to let you know and the media know that we found something we didn't know before. At the end of the day, I'm not calling for prosecution against President Obama for treason. But I am calling for an investigation,' Graham replied. 'Mr. Mueller also said there was no credible evidence that President Trump colluded with the Russians.' 'For years, and months, and days, and weeks, people had their lives turned upside down, chasing the Mueller narrative that Trump was in bed with the Russians, that the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians,' Graham continued. 'What you don't seem to acknowledge is there's something new being found. Rather than reinventing the wheel here, let's go back to special counsel model to look at this something new, ' Graham also added. Graham is not the first GOP Senator this week to walk the fine line between sharing the Trump administration's new information, while also keeping in mind the limits that Congressional investigations have. During a late-night TV appearance Wednesday, Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz told Fox News' Laura Ingraham that former President Barack Obama could most likely not be prosecuted for treason over his handling of the 'Russia hoax.' The duo discussed the latest intel released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard about the 2016 presidential election, and the role that former President Barack Obama and his intelligence agencies played at the time. DNI Gabbard told members of the media at the White House Wednesday that the information released by her office has been referred to the Department of Justice and FBI to investigate the criminal implications. DNI Gabbard released a declassified report allegedly implicating Obama and his administration over the 2016 election Russia Hoax. This came the day after President Trump accused former President Obama of treason in an Oval Office exchange with the news media. 'He's not going to be prosecuted for treason,' Ingraham stated 'That's not going to happen.' 'He's not going to be prosecuted, in all likelihood, for treason,' Cruz replied, agreeing with the host. Obama issued a statement via his spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush last week that refuted many of the accusations circling around him.
