Shimla, Aug 20 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday offered floral tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 81st birth anniversary at the Sadbhawana Chowk here, officials said.
Sukhu appealed to the people to follow the path shown by Rajiv Gandhi, saying the late leader is remembered as the 'architect of modern India' who sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of the nation, an official statement said.
Rajiv Gandhi's visionary thinking led to the information technology revolution in the country, from which the younger generation is reaping immense benefits today, Sukhu said.
The chief minister said Rajiv Gandhi was also a social reformer, who, through the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments, ensured reservation for women in the Panchayati Raj institutions.
Carrying forward this vision, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi ensured the passage of a Bill in the Rajya Sabha to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures, Sukhu said.
Later, the chief minister also administered a oath of national integration and communal harmony to the officials of the Himachal Pradesh Secretariat.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, state Congress chief Pratibha Singh, along with Cabinet ministers were present on the occasion, among others. PTI BPL ARI

‘Reddy a fearless champion of equality': Mallikarjun Kharge introduces V-P candidate to Opp leaders

Calling upon every MP to support former SC judge B Sudershan Reddy for the Vice President's post, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said his nomination stood as the Opposition's firm commitment to restoring steadily declining 'fairness, impartiality, and dignity to the functioning of the Rajya Sabha'. Reddy, who will be the joint Opposition candidate, was formally introduced to senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar among others, at a meeting in the Central Hall of Parliament on Wednesday. At a time when the integrity of India's democratic institutions was 'facing unprecedented challenges', Kharge said Justice Reddy's contest against NDA's C P Radhakrishnan was 'an ideological battle for the soul of our nation'. 'This Vice-Presidential election is not merely a contest for an office; it is an ideological battle for the soul of our nation. While the ruling party has chosen the ideology of RSS, we uphold the Constitution and its values as our guiding light,' he said on the eve of the last day of filing nominations for the polls scheduled on September 9. Terming him a 'towering figure in Indian jurisprudence', Justice Reddy, Kharge said, was 'renowned for his unwavering commitment to justice' and had been a fearless champion of social, economic, and political equality, delivering landmark judgments that have 'strengthened the fabric of our democracy'. Referring to the three Bills introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament on Wednesday, he said, 'Constitutional Amendment Bills that undermine the core values of parliamentary democracy and federalism are being introduced in subterfuge at the fag end of the session, leaving no scope for meaningful debate or scrutiny.' 'Over the last 11 years, we have witnessed the blatant misuse of parliamentary majority to arm the autonomous agencies like ED, I-T, and CBI with draconian powers to target Opposition leaders. Now, these new Bills are set to become instruments in the hands of the ruling party to further undermine and destabilise democratically elected governments in the states,' he added.

'Out Of Control': Donald Trump Says US Museums Focus Too Much On 'How Bad Slavery Was'

Donald Trump criticized US museums for focusing on negative history, like slavery. US President Donald Trump accused American museums of focusing disproportionately on the darker chapters of the nation's past- including 'how bad slavery was." In a post on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump said he had instructed his attorneys to review the country's museums, comparing the move to his ongoing crackdown on universities. 'The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been- Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future," Donald Trump wrote. Donald Trump's comments follow last week's White House announcement of an extensive review of the Smithsonian Institution, which oversees many of the nation's most prominent museums. In a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III, three senior aides to the president wrote that the initiative 'aims to ensure alignment with the US President's directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions." Museum scholars have raised concerns about the plan as Janet Marstine, a museum ethics expert, warned that the administration's demands 'set the Smithsonian up for failure," calling them unrealistic given the breadth of materials requested. The White House has asked the institution to produce everything from internal emails and memos to digital copies of all gallery placards currently on display. Earlier this year, Donald Trump issued an executive order assigning Vice President JD Vance- who sits on the Smithsonian's Board of Regents- to oversee efforts to halt federal funding for exhibits deemed out of step with the administration's agenda. The US President's latest stance marks a sharp departure from his first term, when he praised the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture during a 2017 visit. At the time, Donald Trump said he was 'deeply proud" of a museum that honored 'the millions of African American men and women who built our national heritage." Founded in the 1840s with funds from British scientist James Smithson's estate, the Smithsonian is a federally supported trust but not an executive branch agency. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Is BCCI above national interest? Aaditya on proposed India-Pak match in Asia Cup

Agency: Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday wrote to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya against a proposed match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup and asked whether the BCCI is above the national interest. The letter said many nations have been isolated in sports over a cause that is for the greater good of humanity. Terrorism is one such cause that prevents either of our nations from progressing peacefully. In the past decade, time and again, the country and its citizens have faced terrorist attacks based out of Pakistan, and the Union Government has reiterated it constantly, Thackeray stated. Recently, the Prime Minister also said water and blood cannot flow together from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Yet, only because of BCCI's insistence and desire for the money and ad revenue, probably, it holds the 'sindoor", and lives of our jawans as negligible, he said. 'Yet, sadly enough, and shamelessly, the BCCI is sending a team to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Is the BCCI above national interest? Is it above the sacrifice of our Jawans? Is it above the Sindoor of those who faced the attack in Pahalgham?" Thackeray said. 'We sent out delegations to the world, saying Pakistan is behind Pahalgam. Now, will we send out delegations to the world to justify why we are playing cricket with them?" Thackeray asked. It is truly a shameful act, when Pakistan has backed out of playing hockey in India, citing security reasons, that the BCCI plays Pakistan for selfish interest, the former Maharashtra minister said. The two marquee India versus Pakistan games will be held in Dubai during the upcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to start in the UAE from September 9. India and Pakistan will square off on September 14 in Dubai and one more time, potentially on September 21, at the same venue. The final on September 29 will also be held in Dubai. The tournament will be held in T20I format, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
