Ghana secured their passage to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations by beating Tanzania 4-1, while defending champions South Africa finished top of Group C after cruising to a 4-0 win over Mali.
The holders and the Malians were already assured of their spots in the knockout stages before kick-off in Oujda, but Banyana Banyana comprehensively outclassed the West Africans.

Ghana's margin of victory, coupled with Mali's heavy defeat, means the Black Queens finish second in the table on goal difference and the Malians slip to third.
South Africa will stay in Oujda and face Senegal, the third-placed finisher in Group A, in the last eight while Ghana have set up a meeting with Algeria in Berkane.
Mali, meanwhile, face hosts Morocco in the capital Rabat.
Monday's results saw Botswana eliminated, with the Mares only able to progress as one of two best-ranked third-placed sides if the Ghana-Tanzania game had ended as a draw.
Banyana dominant in victory
After a lacklustre performance by South Africa in their 1-1 draw against Tanzania on Friday, goals from Lebogang Ramalepe, captain Refiloe Jane, Hildah Magaia and youngster Ronnel Donnelly earned Desiree Ellis's side a comfortable win over Mali.

It took Banyana Banyana less than five minutes to take the lead as they capitalised on poor Mali defending before Jermaine Seoposenwe picked out Ramalepe and the veteran fired beyond Fatoumata Karentao.
Karentao was beaten for a second time after the half-hour mark by Jane's direct free-kick, and the Mali keeper, who was in visible pain towards the end of the first half, was substituted at the break.
Alima Cisse replaced her in the Female Eagles goal, and had to pick the ball out of the net in the 61st minute when Magaia slotted home to finish off a well-worked team move.
Donnelly, the youngest player in the South Africa squad, wrapped up the scoring in the 79th minute with a scuffed effort.

After stuttering against Tanzania, Banyana Banyana's dominant win means the side once again look like they could be strong contenders to defend the title they won for the first time in 2022.
Ghana see off Tanzania
Meanwhile, Ghana and Tanzania met in Berkane, with both sides knowing that victory would secure qualification.
The Black Queens went ahead in the 12th minute when Princella Adubea charged down a clearance by the goalkeeper Najiati Idrisa before Stumai Athumani equalised for the East Africans four minutes before the break with a volley from a narrow angle.
Ghana were presented with a chance to regain their lead when Anastazia Katunzi scythed down Princess Marfo, and Alice Kusi's 63rd minute penalty squirmed under Idrisa to make it 2-1.

That left Tanzania needing two goals to progress, and Ghana made the game safe through Evelyn Badu's close-range finish with three minutes remaining.
There was still time for London City Lionesses forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah to put the gloss on the scoreline in the final minute with a composed finish into the bottom right-hand corner.

Marcel Ruiz was close to joining La Máquina

In football, a single decision can change the history of a club, and Cruz Azul experienced this with the case of Marcel Ruiz. The current Liga MX and Gold Cup champion was very close to wearing the sky-blue jersey. Advertisement Ruiz, now a star at Toluca and with the Mexican National Team, was sought after by La Máquina when he was just starting to shine at Querétaro. 'Cruz Azul offered 8.5 million dollars for Marcel Ruiz,' revealed Tito Villa in a recent broadcast. The offer was made during Ricardo Peláez's tenure as sporting director, with the intention of adding talent to the midfield. However, Gallos Blancos rejected the proposal despite it being well above the national average. The rejection left Cruz Azul without their signing, and over time, Querétaro ended up selling the player for a lower amount. Now, Marcel is aiming for Europe, far from the path he could have taken with the cementeros. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. $80 million Cowboy cuts to chase, a 'Sharp defense' is on the way in 2025

With so many offseason changes, the Dallas Cowboys defense looks less like a finished product and more like a blacksmith's forge; sparks flying, heat rising, weapons in the making. One person not rattled by the shift? Defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, who says this group is in a phase where they're 'sharpening [their] swords.'In a recent, exclusive interview, the newly-minted $80 million man said fans should "expect a sharp defense' as things are already shaping up and key pieces are still on their way back. 'I like the way our defense looks right now,' he told me. 'You got some guys that are on their way back. I'm excited to see what Sam [Williams] does. I'm very, very excited to see what Sam does. We're getting [DeMarvion Overshown] back at some point during the season, so that's gonna be great.' Between bringing in defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and losing longtime tone-setter DeMarcus Lawrence, a new identity is being crafted. And Osa isn't just here for it, he's helping design it. Advertisement Odighizuwa has always been a lead-by-example guy, but when we talked, he acknowledged stepping into more of a vocal leadership role this year. Not by changing who he is, but by speaking up where it matters. 'I'm not gonna change my style,' he said. 'Just be a little more vocal, speak where I see fit. The good thing is we brought in some good guys that are a little bit older. They've got good heads on their shoulders as well and don't necessarily need someone to follow.' Among those 'good guys' are veteran additions like Solomon Thomas and Kaiir Elam, players Odighizuwa says 'pop out on tape,' put in extra work, and lead by example in their own right. And that extra work is critical this time of year. Odighizuwa made it clear that every member of the defense is held to a certain standard that it's up to them to reach by training camp. 'Especially playing for Coach Eberflus,' he emphasized, 'you gotta be in great shape. You gotta be in championship condition.' Advertisement This defense knows there's no easing into the season. Every rep is a weapon being sharpened. Every meeting, every lift, every film session, it's all preparation for battle. And Osa Odighizuwa? He's not just sharpening his sword. He's helping the whole armory gear up. To hear more from him, including thoughts on leadership, conditioning, and also some surprising anime takes, check out the full interview.
