$80 million Cowboy cuts to chase, a 'Sharp defense' is on the way in 2025
One person not rattled by the shift? Defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, who says this group is in a phase where they're 'sharpening [their] swords.'In a recent, exclusive interview, the newly-minted $80 million man said fans should "expect a sharp defense' as things are already shaping up and key pieces are still on their way back.
'I like the way our defense looks right now,' he told me. 'You got some guys that are on their way back. I'm excited to see what Sam [Williams] does. I'm very, very excited to see what Sam does. We're getting [DeMarvion Overshown] back at some point during the season, so that's gonna be great.'
Between bringing in defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and losing longtime tone-setter DeMarcus Lawrence, a new identity is being crafted. And Osa isn't just here for it, he's helping design it.

Odighizuwa has always been a lead-by-example guy, but when we talked, he acknowledged stepping into more of a vocal leadership role this year. Not by changing who he is, but by speaking up where it matters.
'I'm not gonna change my style,' he said. 'Just be a little more vocal, speak where I see fit. The good thing is we brought in some good guys that are a little bit older. They've got good heads on their shoulders as well and don't necessarily need someone to follow.'
Among those 'good guys' are veteran additions like Solomon Thomas and Kaiir Elam, players Odighizuwa says 'pop out on tape,' put in extra work, and lead by example in their own right.
And that extra work is critical this time of year. Odighizuwa made it clear that every member of the defense is held to a certain standard that it's up to them to reach by training camp.
'Especially playing for Coach Eberflus,' he emphasized, 'you gotta be in great shape. You gotta be in championship condition.'

This defense knows there's no easing into the season. Every rep is a weapon being sharpened. Every meeting, every lift, every film session, it's all preparation for battle.
And Osa Odighizuwa? He's not just sharpening his sword. He's helping the whole armory gear up.
To hear more from him, including thoughts on leadership, conditioning, and also some surprising anime takes, check out the full interview.

Kyle Hamilton's versatility earns him the top safety spot in AP rankings
Kyle Hamilton has quickly proved that he can be a jack of all trades on Baltimore's stellar defense, thriving in the slot, the box or as a deep safety. But it was the decision to move Hamilton to free safety midway through last season that helped eliminate the big plays and boost the Ravens' defense. Hamilton's talent and versatility helped him earn the honor of being voted the top safety in the league by The Associated Press. A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at safety, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second- through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points. Hamilton got five first place-votes, one second and one third to claim the top spot. Detroit's Kerby Joseph got the other three first-place votes and finished second. Green Bay's Xavier McKinney, Detroit's Brian Branch and Derwin James of the Los Angeles Chargers rounded out the top five. Atlanta's Jessie Bates, Tampa Bay's Antoine Winfield Jr., Miami's Minkah Fitzpatrick, Denver's Brandon Jones, Arizona's Budda Baker and Houston's C.J. Gardner-Johnson also received votes. 1. KYLE HAMILTON, Baltimore Ravens Hamilton has been the most important piece on Baltimore's defense thanks in large part to his versatility. He has the ability to stop the run, excel against the pass and rush the quarterback and was voted a first-team All-Pro in 2023 and second-teamer last season. Hamilton played the majority of his snaps starting in Week 11 last season as a free safety and the Ravens went from allowing 4.7 pass plays of at least 20 yards per game to 1.6 after the switch. 2. KERBY JOSEPH, Detroit Lions Joseph emerged as a big-time playmaker in his third season, leading the NFL with nine interceptions to earn first-team All-Pro honors. His 17 career interceptions are the most for any safety in his first three seasons since Hall of Famer Ed Reed had 21. 3. XAVIER MCKINNEY, Green Bay Packers McKinney made a major impact on Green Bay's defense in his first season after signing with the Packers as a free agent. He was at his best in pass coverage as a deep safety. McKinney had eight interceptions last season and allowed a 56.4 passer rating when targeted in coverage, according to Pro Football Focus. 4. BRIAN BRANCH, Detroit Lions Branch has become an immediate impact player on Detroit's defense since being drafted in the second round in 2023. He led all safeties with 16 passes defensed last season and was tied for third with eight tackles for loss as he performed at a high level both in the run and pass game. 5. DERWIN JAMES, Los Angeles Chargers James bounced back from a down 2023 season to earn second-team All-Pro honors in his first season in coordinator Jesse Minter's defense. James is one of the most versatile safeties, getting extensive time working in the slot, as a box safety, a deep safety and even as a pass rusher, where he had the second-most pressures of any safety last season. ___ AP NFL:

Modric at AC Milan to 'stay competitive and in Europe' at 40
Croatia captain Luka Modric said Wednesday he had penned a one-year contract with AC Milan to "stay competitive and in Europe". "I'm happy to be here and I look forward to a new adventure," the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner told AC Milan's TV channel after joining from Real Madrid. Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined the Spanish giants from Tottenham in 2012, going on to win six Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. "I wanted to stay in Europe, to continue playing competitive football. I had some other offers but when Milan showed up for me it was clear from the first moment," he said. Milan finished a disappointing eighth in Serie A last season and will not play in European competition. But Modric insisted Milan remain "one of the biggest clubs in Europe". "Milan cannot be satisfied with average and needs to have the biggest goals possible, to win titles, to compete with the best teams in the world, that's why I am here." Modric signed a one-year contract, with an option for an additional season with the seven-time Champions League and 19-time Serie A winners. "I'm never satisfied, I always want more," he warned. "When you've experienced that feeling (of winning), you want to feel it even more. I still have hunger, desire, still wanting more." To explain his longevity, Modric said "the most important thing is the love for the game, for football". "That's what I still have, what I still feel in my belly, this fire, that's what pushes me ... there is no secrets, for me it's the passion, the love for football. I am never satisfied." The 2018 World Cup runner-up also spoke of his childhood memories of Milan. "When I was a kid, I watched the Italian league a lot, Milan was my favourite team," he recalled. "Also because Zvonimir Boban was there, who was my idol," he added, referring to his compatriot who wore the Rossoneri jersey from 1992 to 2001. jr/ea/gj

Josh Allen Lands New Job In Unprecedented Offseason Move
Josh Allen Lands New Job In Unprecedented Offseason Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has been with the organization since they drafted him in 2018. Throughout his seven-year tenure in Buffalo, they've appeared in two AFC championship games, losing both to the Kansas City Chiefs. Last season, Allen was named the NFL's 2024 regular-season MVP, receiving 27 of the 49 first-place votes. He became the third Bills player to win MVP, joining running backs O.J. Simpson (1973) and Thurman Thomas (1991). Although it appears clear that Buffalo has a championship-contending window for as long as Allen is under center, this offseason, he has taken on a new role, but not with the Bills. On Wednesday, Allen became an equity partner in New Era Cap and is taking on the role of "Director of Billustration." He has worked with New Era since his rookie year, but through this expanded partnership, Allen is the first ambassador to receive equity in the company. The reigning MVP broke the news on his LinkedIn page, where he described his new role and what his primary job as quarterback for the Bills means to him. "Quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. Farm kid from Firebaugh who got a shot and ran with it. Buffalo believed in me, and I give everything I've got back to this team and this great city. I love this game. I love this team. I'm lucky to wear the jersey," Allen wrote. "Off the field, I'm the 'Director of Billustration' at New Era, which is a fancy way of saying I get to help design some Bills gear and have a little fun with it. That's me. Football, family, Buffalo and a few sharp-looking caps." While leading the Bills to a Super Bowl is Allen's No. 1 priority, it will be interesting to see what kind of designs the quarterback will bring to Bills gear for New story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 16, 2025, where it first appeared.
