‘Dialogue' must be at heart of China, Australia ties, PM Albanese tells Xi
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is on his second visit to China as prime minister, seeking to bolster recently stabilised trade ties even as geopolitical tensions remain high.
BEIJING - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on July 15 that 'dialogue' must be at the heart of ties between Canberra and Beijing as he met with President Xi Jinping.
Mr Albanese is on his second visit to China as prime minister, seeking to bolster recently stabilised trade ties even as geopolitical tensions remain high.
Relations between Beijing and Canberra have charted a bumpy course over the past decade, a period marked by repeated disagreements over national security and competing interests across the vast Pacific region.
Affairs improved in December, when China called off a ban on imported Australian rock lobster, removing the final obstacle to ending a damaging trade war waged between the countries from 2017.
Meeting Mr Xi in Beijing on July 15, Mr Albanese said he welcomed 'the opportunity to set out Australia's views and interests'.
'Australia values our relationship with China and will continue to approach it in a calm and consistent manner, guided by our national interest,' Mr Albanese said.
'It's important we have these direct discussions on issues that matter to us and to the stability and prosperity of our region. As you and I have agreed previously, dialogue needs to be at the center of our relationship,' he added.

Mr Xi, in turn, hailed the 'benefits' of improved ties between China and Australia, saying the relationship had 'risen from the setbacks and turned around'.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has sought to leverage Africa's first G20 presidency to promote an African agenda, with topics including the high cost of capital and climate change. Here are the key issues to be discussed: DEBT STRESS Nearly two dozen countries in Africa are already in or at high risk of debt distress, the International Monetary Fund said. Debt-servicing costs crowd out spending on services like infrastructure development, health and education. Launched in late 2020, the G20 Common Framework is a platform aimed at speeding up and simplifying the process of getting overstretched countries back on their feet. But progress has been slow. Making the platform more efficient is one target for South Africa. Ramaphosa launched an Africa Expert Panel in March whose role is to galvanise efforts, chief among them debt relief. FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT With aid and development-finance cuts and a pivot by wealthy countries to defence spending, traditional funding sources for developing nations have become scarcer. South Africa is looking to shore up favourable finance for poorer nations. It wants to strengthen and improve the role of multilateral development banks in financing for development. Washington, meanwhile, could potentially withdraw from more global institutions - including these banks. Some analysts believe Washington's withdrawal from multilateralism could leave a space for China to occupy, but it is unclear if Beijing aims to do that. Lending to Africa from China has slowed to a trickle leaving an $80 billion financing gap. Meanwhile, U.S. and European grants - accounting for 25% of the region's external financing - face cuts as Washington suspends foreign aid and European capitals redirect funds toward defence. JUST ENERGY TRANSITION President Donald Trump's administration has withdrawn from the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) - a key focus for South Africa that is designed to help developing countries transition away from coal to cleaner energy. Launched in 2021, JETPs aim to funnel money from governments, multilateral lenders and the private sector to renewable energy projects in a way that benefits local communities. On Monday, the G20's financial stability watchdog said it had developed a new plan to tackle climate risks but it had paused further policy work in light of the U.S. retreat from climate action. Mobilising funding for climate disasters affecting the Global South was a key agenda item for South Africa's presidency. TRADE Trump's tariff threats have disrupted the global economy and the response will dominate the agenda even as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent skips the gathering. U.S. plans for tariffs on Canada, Europe and Mexico as well as threats to impose further levies on BRICS member countries including China, India, Russia, Brazil and G20 host South Africa, further heighten tensions between the world's largest economy and other G20 nations. COMMUNIQUE Director General of Treasury Duncan Pieterse said in a statement on Monday that he hoped to issue the first Communique under the South African G20 presidency at the end of the meetings. Grijalva, a 54-year-old former county board supervisor, held off a late, surging challenge from Deja Foxx, a 25-year-old rival who was backed by progressives seeking generational changes within the Democratic Party. Grijalva is now favored to win the September 23 general election to replace Representative Raul Grijalva, her father who died in March, in Arizona's 7th Congressional District that is heavily Democratic and stretches along the U.S.-Mexico border, including parts of Tucson. If she prevails in September's general election, Grijalva will become the first Latina to be elected to an Arizona U.S. House seat. She would fill out the two-year term her father won in last November's election. Altogether, he served for over 22 years in the House and earned a reputation as a protector of public lands and an advocate for immigration reforms. Unofficial returns posted by the Arizona secretary of state's office had Grijalva leading Foxx by a solid 62%-20.6%. With Democrats' losses in last year's presidential and congressional elections weighing heavily on the party nationwide, it has struggled over how best to appeal to young progressives while luring back working-class voters who shifted toward the Republican Party. Grijalva racked up notable backers spanning the party divide. They include environmental groups, labor unions and lawmakers who range from progressive luminaries such as Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York to the moderate Representative Marcy Kaptur of Ohio. Foxx won the endorsement of David Hogg, a survivor of a 2018 Florida school shooting who held a high position within the Democratic National Committee until he ruffled establishment feathers by threatening to help finance challengers to Democratic incumbents he deemed insufficiently progressive. Raul Grijalva won re-election in November, easily beating his Republican opponent by about 27 percentage points.
