Casino reports Q1 2025 net sales down on LFL basis
French retail group Casino Group reported net sales of €2.00bn ($2.27m) in the first quarter (Q1) of financial year 2025 (FY25), reflecting a drop of 1.2% on a comparable basis and 5.0% in reported figures.
This downturn includes the impact of a 1.1 percentage point calendar effect due to the leap year in 2024 and the shift of Easter into April, as well as approximately a 2.7 percentage point effect from its convenience store network optimisation.
The group's convenience brands, including Monoprix, Naturalia, Franprix, and Casino labels, experienced a 0.7% dip in net sales on a like-for-like (LFL) basis over the quarter.
Specifically, Monoprix saw its net sales shrink by 0.6% while Franprix's sales fell by 1.7%, echoing the trend from the previous quarter.
Other Casino brand outlets such as Vival, Spar, and Petit Casino also reported a 1.9% decline on a LFL basis.
Casino Group's gross merchandise volume reached €2.90bn in Q1 FY25, marking a 3.6% reduction compared to the same period in the previous year.
Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) decreased by €6m to €100m over the quarter; however, excluding disynergies, adjusted EBITDA would have seen an increase of €6m.
Throughout Q1 2025, Casino Group persisted in streamlining its store network, closing 466 stores, 96% of which were managed by franchisees or through business leases.
Additionally, the group opened 31 new outlets, with franchisees or business leases operating 90% of them.
In a related news, Monoprix aims to franchise 27 Monop' stores in Paris and the Île-de-France region to a joint venture with the Zouari family.
This initiative aligns with Monoprix's strategy to invigorate sales and accelerate expansion through collaboration with established partners.
The plan includes renovating these stores to align with the latest Monop' concept standards while preserving existing jobs.
Completion of this transaction is pending consultations with employee representative bodies and requisite legal procedures, along with approval from the French Competition Authority.
Casino Group chief executive officer and Monoprix chair Philippe Palazzi said: 'This partnership is fully in line with our strategy of revitalising our store network and developing the franchise model.
"With the support of a strategic, longstanding partner like the Zouari family, we will be able to modernise our network faster and strengthen our appeal in city centres.'

Five takeaways from Trump's White House farewell to Elon Musk
President Trump and Elon Musk appeared together one last time in the Oval Office on Friday, marking the exit of the world's richest man from his frontline political role. Time was up for Musk because of his status as a special government employee – a categorization that triggers few disclosure requirements but also caps the duration of service. Musk's time spearheading the quasi-official Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been enormously controversial. It has also hurt Musk's business interests, particularly in relation to Tesla, which has seen falling sales. Here are the five main takeaways from the Trump-Musk meeting. Musk raised eyebrows in recent days when he voiced criticism of the huge budget bill that is wending its way through Congress. Conversely, plenty of Republicans inside and outside Trump's orbit have tired of the downsides of dealing with the fractious businessman. But on Friday, both Trump and Musk were at pains to emphasize there was no breach in their relationship, nor was their bond dissolving. At times, the display of closeness felt a bit unctuous, as when Musk praised Trump for his gold-heavy interior design makeover of the Oval Office. Musk said Trump had brought 'majesty' to the famous room. On a more serious and central issue, Musk insisted 'this is not the end of DOGE but really the beginning.' He added, 'I'll continue to be visiting here, and be a friend and advisor to the president.' Trump for his part agreed that Musk was 'going to be back and forth.' The president also noted that he and others inside the administration would 'remember' Musk for the legacy of his work with DOGE. The actual savings achieved by DOGE are a major point of contention. Before his work in Washington began in earnest, Musk had predicted it would be possible to shear $2 trillion from the federal budget, which totals about $6.8 trillion. Critics cast that claim as hyperbolic – and they were proven correct. Musk repeatedly scaled back his promised savings, ultimately settling on $160 billion. Fact-checkers have cast doubt even on that, with the BBC noting that actual itemized savings from DOGE come in at around $61 billion. On Friday, Trump and Musk betrayed a sensitivity on the topic, arguing that much greater savings would accrete over time. 'The numbers that we're talking about are substantial but they're going to be very much more substantial with time,' Trump said. 'The numbers could double and triple.' Musk said, 'I'm confident that over time, we'll see a trillion dollars of savings.' Skeptics will note the lack of an exact timescale. Beyond the minutiae of DOGE's work, the most attention-grabbing element of the Friday event was the livid bruising around Musk's right eye. He was duly asked about this by Brett Samuels of The Hill. Musk's response began with an awkward joke referencing the apparent contretemps between French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte that captured global attention after being caught on film last Sunday. 'I wasn't anywhere near France,' Musk said. He then clarified that the markings had come from a playful tussle with his young son, X. He contended that he had told his son, ''Go ahead, punch me in the face.' And he did. Turns out even a five-year-old punching you in the face….' Trump, moments later, said, 'I didn't notice it actually.' Musk's critics will of course prefer some more scandalous explanation, but there's no evidence Musk's version of events is inaccurate. A pall was cast over Musk's farewell by a New York Times story on his personal life. The Times contended that, during Musk's time campaigning for Trump last year, 'he was also using drugs far more intensely than previously known.' The report also contended that he was consuming large amounts of ketamine, as well as using Ecstasy, Adderall and psychedelic mushrooms. The Times noted that it was 'unclear' if Musk's drug use had continued during his time in the White House but also contended his family life had 'grown increasingly tumultuous' in part because of the number of children he has fathered with different women. A reporter in the Oval Office has only begun raising the issue of the Times report when Musk cut him off. The businessman instead inveighed against the news organization's coverage of allegations about collusion between Trump and Russia — or 'their lies about the RussiaGate hoax,' as Musk put it. He then brusquely said, 'Let's move on, ok, next question.' There was some semblance of news from the Oval Office meeting beyond the dynamics between Trump and Musk. Trump was asked about several foreign policy issues. Amid speculation about whether there might be a ceasefire soon in Gaza, Trump contended some kind of 'agreement' was 'very close.' He added, 'We'll let you know about it during the day or maybe tomorrow.' Unpromted, he continued, 'I think we have a chance of making a deal with Iran also. They don't want to be blown up. They would rather make a deal.' In relation to the Ukraine-Russia war, Trump interrupted a reporter who referenced the administration's dealings with 'a very stubborn Vladimir Putin.' 'And Zelensky,' Trump interjected. In regards to Putin and his intensifying bombings of Ukrainian cities, Trump complained about 'rockets being shot into cities like Kyiv during a negotiation that I felt was maybe very close to ending. We were going to solve a problem.' Even as he leveled criticisms of Moscow, however, Trump still held out the possibility of an end to the war, 'I don't like being surprised so I'm very disappointed in that way. That being said, I'd like to see it end,' he said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Nets' dark-horse No. 8 pick candidate rising up draft boards
The post Nets' dark-horse No. 8 pick candidate rising up draft boards appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Brooklyn Nets can go several directions with their first selection in next month's draft. Their fall to the No. 8 pick put several household college names, such as Jeremiah Fears, Tre Johnson, Kon Kneuppel and Khaman Maluach, within their range. However, French phenom Noa Essengue is creeping into the conversation as he continues to flash his raw potential overseas. Advertisement Bleacher Report and Yahoo Sports have the Nets selecting the 6-foot-9 forward in their latest projections. 'In the past two drafts, we've rebuilding teams swing for upside overseas with the Wizards taking Bilal Coulibaly and the Hornets grabbing Tijane Salaun. The Nets have no high-upside prospects on the roster and could be enticed by the draft's second-youngest prospects who can make threes, attack, finish and defend all over,' said Jonathan Wasserman. '[Essengue's] improving on-ball skill and rising offensive production are becoming notable draft storylines, considering he's the draft's second-youngest prospect who also offers exciting defensive tools and movement.' Essengue is putting together one of his best runs of the season while playing for Ratiopharm Ulm in the BBL, Germany's top professional league. The 18-year-old has averaged 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists on 53.3 percent shooting in 22.0 minutes per game over his last eight appearances. ESPN has moved the Frenchman up to No. 9 in its latest Top 100 big board. Will Sean Marks, Nets take a chance on Noa Essengue with No. 8 pick? Brad Penner-Imagn Images In the early stages of a rebuild, there is no question that the Nets should prioritize the best player available at No. 8 rather than drafting for positional need. However, there has been much deliberation about what that entails: do they opt for a safe prospect with a high floor or take a swing on upside? Advertisement Noa Essengue would fall into the latter category. The 18-year-old's fluid athleticism, transition ball handling, finishing ability, playmaking flashes and defensive tools inspire hope that he can develop into a dominant two-way force. His ability to reach that ceiling will depend on several swing skills. First, his jumpshot must reach a respectable level. While he's shown flashes in that area, he's shot just 25.5 percent from distance across 52 appearances this season. His half-court ball-handling is just ok at this point, limiting his ability as a self-creator. And while he possesses the tools of an elite defender, his body positioning and awareness still have room for improvement. None of this should be surprising given Essengue's youth. He's the second-youngest player in this year's class, only three days older than Cooper Flagg. His production at the professional level at such a young age should be a green flag for front offices. Essengue has been a foul-drawing machine this season, attempting 7.5 free throws per 36 minutes and converting 72.0 percent. The young forward has displayed a soft touch on his drives, shooting 64.2 percent on twos. He's produced at this level offensively despite his raw handle and inconsistent jump shot. Overall, Essengue has the tools to develop into a home-run pick if he's able to round out the less-polished aspects of his game. However, he doesn't currently possess an elite skill outside of his impressive measurables and athleticism. If the Nets are confident in his player archetype and development trajectory, he could be their guy at No. 8. If not, they could opt for a safer pick with an established college star.
