SUMMERTIME is just around the corner – even if the occasional grey skies and chilly breeze make it hard to believe.
And with the warmer, sunnier days on the horizon, it feels like the perfect time to cruise across town in a seriously cool cabriolet.

Better yet, picking up a fun and fast convertible that's also reliable and even family friendly has never been easier, with plenty of options available.
"There's nothing quite like that moment of the sun on your face, top down as summer arrives,' said Catherine King of Auto Trader, who recently revealed to Sun Motors her top drop top favourites.
'We often see an increase in searches for convertibles when the sun appears, for example two weeks ago when we had a sunny weekend, we saw a 15% day-on-day increase across the platform.
'While some might think convertibles are expensive and just for summer, there are plenty of budget-friendly options suitable for use all year round.
'As well as price, space is also a key consideration. Convertibles tend to have smaller boots as the roof needs to be stored too.
'However, models like the BMW 1 series offer some of the most space, ideal for the summer essentials.'
A good, 1 series BMW convertible can be found on Auto Trader for under £8,000 with some 35,000 miles on the clock, while higher mileage examples can be found for as little as £4,000.
Another example is the Mercedes SLK, one of the most popular two-seater convertibles that ranges from £1,500 to £9,000 on the used car website.
Not one for large families obviously, but great for those looking for something classy and cool, with great handling.
On the flip side, the Mini Cooper Convertible, while small, does come with the extra passenger seats in the back - as well as the extra oomph you'd come to expect from the Cooper variant.

Catherine added: 'A key factor is whether you want a two-seater, something like the Mercedes SLK or a four-seater to accommodate more passengers, such as a Mini Cooper Convertible.
'With a four-seater those in the back may be set for a windier ride, with less screen protection, but it's more practical if you regularly have more passengers.'
One thing convertible buyers might need to consider is roof-type, as there are a range of options.
Fabric roofs, while prone to more weather damage, are often simpler and manually operated, in contrast to hardtops, which are more durable but are heavier and can be expensive if they go wrong.
Catherine said: 'It will come down to what best suits your lifestyle and how you can store the car.
'Of course, reliability is always key. The classic Mazda MX-5, which has become almost the poster child for convertible cars, has long been recognised as a mechanically reliable choice although it's worth noting it can be prone to rust.
'Prioritising reliability means you can have some peace of mind and confidence that it will stand the test of time.'
With over 15,000 convertible models currently listed on Auto Trader, whatever your budget and needs, there's bound to be an option for you.

$3M Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire in Viral Video Priced at close to $3 million and limited to a planned 275 units, the Mercedes-AMG One hybrid hypercar is as exclusive as it gets, which is why the mere thought of one being damaged or lost is traumatic. Unfortunately, a new video has surfaced online of an AMG One burning to the ground. The clip was shared by user Chrimbu on social media, but no details were provided as to exactly where or how the blaze started. The fire does not appear to have been caused by an accident, though, which suggests the car unexpectedly caught alight. Complex Hybrid Powertrain To Blame? The extensively electrified powertrain of the AMG One isn't going to reduce the intensity of a fire. Besides the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine, the One also features four electric motors and an 8.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. When exposed to extreme temperatures, lithium-ion batteries can result in thermal runaway. According to UL Research Institutes, this process causes the lithium-ion cell to enter a self-heating state that is difficult to stop. Furthermore, it makes it more challenging to extinguish such a fire. There's no way of knowing if the AMG One's powertrain caused the fire we see here, but it's likely that the battery and associated components further fueled the flames. When it's not lighting up the sky, the AMG One's performance is pretty hot, with the hypercar capable of a 0-62 mph sprint time of 2.9 seconds. It will reach around 218 mph, too. Not The First AMG One To Catch Alight Almost exactly two years ago, The Sun reported on another AMG One that was burned to a crisp. Allegedly, this one was being towed in Staffordshire, England, when it burst into flames. The fact that the car was switched off and being towed at the time makes this an especially bizarre event. 'We are aware of this incident involving a car that was being transported in a closed trailer as part of its assembly process,' said a spokesperson for Mercedes at the time. As one of AMG's most ambitious projects ever, Mercedes faced a number of hurdles in developing the hypercar. Ola Kallenius, Mercedes-Benz CEO, once even joked that the board must surely have been 'drunk' when it was decided to forge ahead with the car. Adapting the F1 powertrain for use on the street was one of the biggest challenges, and considering how long it took to get everything right, it's all the more disheartening that at least two Ones have been destroyed. While hybrid and EV naysayers may be quick to point at the elevated fire risks of electrified cars, it's impossible to know for sure if this is an inherent flaw in the AMG hypercar. Certainly, two burned cars will raise eyebrows – especially since this is one of the most expensive cars in the world – but these could be entirely isolated incidents that have nothing to do with each other. Presently, no known recalls have been issued for the AMG One, nor have any known injuries occurred as a result of these fires. All we're left with, then, are two enormous insurance claims and a hypercar world deprived of two spectacular track toys.

A rare example of one of BMW's early sports cars is up for sale, but it's unlikely we'll be able to afford it. A rare piece of German motoring You can never go wrong with a vintage BMW. The German automaker's classic examples have a special way of combining slim bodylines and a svelte silhouette with sheer, menacing performance under the hood. This 1959 BMW 5078 Series II on Bring a Trailer is a perfect example of what I mean. 1959 BMW 507 Series II w/Hardtop — Source: Bring a Trailer/Hyman Ltd When US importer Max Hoffman suggested that BMW design as mid-level sports car for the North American market, BMW replied with the 507. Featuring hand-built aluminum bodywork styled by Albrecht von Goertz, the 507 debuted in 1955 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City before entering production in late 1956. In 1957, the Series II debuted with a smaller fuel tank relocated from behind the seats to inside the trunk to prevent fumes from entering the cabin. This particular example, Chassis 70185, is one of only 252 built during the model's three years of production and was completed on October 6, 1958 as a Feather White car before being delivered new on October 31, 1958, to Autohaus H. Bäte KG in Hannover, Germany. The car reportedly underwent a refurbishment around 2012 that included a repaint in its current shade of Coral Red and a refinishing of its hardtop in an ivory color. The 507 was then acquired in 2022 by German specialists Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors, who re-trimmed the interior in tan leather. 1959 BMW 507 Series II w/Hardtop What sets this particular BMW 507 apart from others is its ivory hardtop that can be installed when the beige convertible top is not in use. Hardtops were optional equipment at the time and were hand-built to fit each car's hand-built bodywork, making them particularly rare and special accessories to own. This tiny thing has a V8 hiding inside Under the hood is a 3,168cc V8 with an aluminum block and cylinder heads as well as twin Zenith carburetors mated to a four-speed manual transmission. This 507 sits on 16' Rudge wheels wrapped in 6.00-16 Michelin Pilote X tires with Dunlop front disc and rear drum brakes behind them. The cabin still wears its tan leather and sports a contrasting ivory steering wheel and shift knob alongside a Becker Mexico radio. Considering that it was purchased from a collection by its current owner in January 2025 and they only added 25 miles since, this poor thing suffers from a severe lack of being driven. This isn't an uncommon occurence with cars of this rarity and value, but it's also not an excuse. I won't go on a tangent about why driving your cars is the right thing to do, but I sure hope that the new owner feels the same way.

So when Kia said Britain's favourite SUV is better for the family than ever before, I had to put it to the test. Meet Maisie and her new bestie, Bijoux the cockapoo. Two little fluff balls, perfect for having a proper rummage around the refreshed Sportage. Here are five things you need to know. 1. It's got a 'baby and toddler mode' which smooths out acceleration and driver inputs. Makes everything less jolty. So little toddlers like Maisie stay sound asleep. Happy babies = happy parents. You know that. 2. The boot. Comfortably beats a Nissan Qashqai at 587 litres v 504. Swallows pushchairs, luggage and all the usual family debris — even a dog crate to keep Bijoux safe. Which also means no muddy paws on the seats. Bonus. Some dogs will appreciate the baby mode, too. The Sun's Motors Editor, Rob Gill test drives the Kia EV3 3. New front end. Lots of big-car tech in here but still knobs and buttons for the things that need knobs and buttons. Comfy. Roomy. Lots of handy storage, big cup holders, even USB-C charging ports in the side of the front seats for people sat in the back. Three well-equipped trim levels, not four as before. Posher versions get Apple CarPlay satnav arrows integrated into the Head-up Display. 5. Engines. Three choices — 1.6-litre petrol mild hybrid, full hybrid or plug-in hybrid. The last two have a bit more oomph than before and the option of four-wheel drive. Here's some good news for caravanners and people with weekend toys. Maximum towing capacity has increased to 1,510kg. No diesel. No pure electric. If you want to go electric next, there's a Sportage-sized EV5 coming soon. 6. Sorry, I can't count. Price. No official numbers from Kia yet but I'm guessing £31k for the petrol manual when it hits showrooms in September? That would be a lot of car at a sensible price.
