New carbon capturing power station in Flintshire could create jobs
Power has been produced at Connah's Quay since the 1950s. The UK government is now negotiating to include the site in the Hynet programme.Subject to funding being in place and consent being granted, the existing gas power station would be replaced by a new – also gas-powered facility – capable of capturing up to 95% of its carbon emissions. The site's owners, Uniper, claimed the project would create an average of about 600 full-time construction jobs, with 60 skilled staff being employed after completion.Mike Lockett, the UK chairman of Uniper, said north Wales and the Hynet region "has massive potential to be a leader, not only in the UK but potentially a world leader for decarbonisation".Jenifer Baxter, chief executive of Industry Wales, said it was a challenge to deliver net zero "as quickly as we might like to, due to complexities to our regulatory framework". If approved, it is thought construction could start from 2027 onwards, with phase one of the new power station possibly being operational by 2030.

Goodbye Kia Ceed! Popular hatch has been sensationally killed off in the UK
The Kia Ceed has been removed from sale in the UK, marking the end of almost 20 years on the market. A Kia spokesperson confirmed the news as the XCeed variant received an update for 2026 with new engines and equipment. While this crossover edition lives on, the Ceed in its hatchback guise, as well as the Sportswagon estate and ProCeed shooting brake, have ended production and sales. Kia said: 'The end of Ceed family production frees up our manufacturing plant in Zilina, Slovakia to produce the EV4 – Kia's first European-built EV – as we prepare to offer an electric C-segment hatchback for the first time. It also frees up space on the production line for EV2, which will be manufactured in Slovakia from early 2026.' Advertisement - Article continues below While Kia's all-electric range of EV-branded vehicles is growing, the Korean firm will maintain a spot in the internal combustion-engined hatch sector with the upcoming K4 - which we've already driven over in the US where it's already on sale. The Ceed first went on sale in 2006 – with the 'Cee'd' name – and quickly became a huge success for Kia, thanks to its industry-leading seven-year warranty, attractive pricing and solid build quality. Lotus was even involved in the original Cee'd's suspension tuning, although it was never a hot hatch by any means. While you can't buy a new Kia Ceed anymore you can check out the Auto Express Marketplace, where you'll find loads of great deals on used Ceeds, including the ProCeed and the Ceed Sportswagon. Having launched a year after the third and final generation of the Ceed, the XCeed will continue to be produced in Slovakia for the UK market. How Reading's 'Smelly Alley' is changing with the times
Union Street in Reading town centre, perhaps better known as Smelly Alley, has hosted many businesses over the the moniker because of the fishmongers that used to be based there, it was also the site of an open sewer hundreds of years Becky Ottery is planning to move her Eclectic Games business from Union Street to Duke Street, where she said the visitors were more likely to be interested in her shop, than in what has become "Tech Alley"."It's changed in character and therefore the flow of people through it has changed. You used to have the families doing all their fresh veg shopping," she said. "Now you've got people coming along because their mobile phone screen has cracked and they want to drop it off and get it repaired. "You tend to have hordes of young people who want to buy as many vapes as possible for a tenner, which is less of a key demographic for me."The business will move from Union Street after a decade later this month. Kevin Little ran fishmongers Frosts in the street for decades before it closed in 2019."It was so busy but such hard work because [trade] was continual. You couldn't walk down the street," he said."There were two fishmongers, I think four butchers, four greengrocers. It was the place to be, but those days are gone. That's how it was but those things will never return, not like that," he said."I do walk back there and have a look but it's just not quite the same, is it?"Gurdeep Wadwa opened his phone shop in Union Street for the first time in 2008 and said he was attracted by its cheaper rents."It's very different now. When I started, all other businesses were there and it was very busy and you would see foot flow of at least 5,000 to 7,000 a day," he said."It was a quick way of getting to the station and to Broad Street or get to other businesses. It has changed so much." You can follow BBC Berkshire on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.
