Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said he wanted the MVA to contest the civic polls together and senior members from his party, along with those from Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Peasants and Workers Party, and other parties, will soon sit together and deliberate on the alliance formula.
Hinting at Sena (UBT) getting a bigger share in Mumbai, Pawar said, "Among MVA partners, Uddhav Thackeray's party is in a stronger position in Mumbai. Though a decision on the alliance is yet to be made, we will have to consider his party's strength."
He said that after the SC verdict, civic elections cannot be delayed any further. "We assume that the process for the polls will begin in the next three months. We wish to go with the alliance, but no decision has been taken so far," Pawar told reporters.
Without naming his nephew and deputy CM Ajit Pawar, he criticised the incident where the Pune District Central Co-operative Bank was kept open in Baramati till 11 pm on Wednesday. The Sharad Pawar-backed panel will take on Ajit Pawar's panel in Baramati's Malegaon cooperative sugar factory election on Sunday.
Pawar said, "During Lok Sabha elections, the bank was found open till late night, and this is the second instance.
Unless instructions are given by those who control the bank, why would bank employees keep it open? It is only during the election phase, and for the second time, that bank employees feel like serving the people till late at night."
While many in opposition have criticised the state for bringing in Hindi as the third language from Std I indirectly, Pawar tool a cautious stand, saying, "There should not be a compulsion to learn Hindi, but students cannot ignore the language. Nearly 55% to 60% of the country's population speaks Hindi, and there is no issue in learning the language to have better communication. But there should not be any compulsion.

Congress favours Hindi, but English opens new avenues: Ashok Gehlot

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday said Congress is in favour of Hindi but English opens new avenues in the world for everyone. Gehlot's comments came a day after Home Minister Amit Shah's reported remarks on English. "Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi and all of us are also in favour of Hindi but English is an international language which opens new avenues in the world for everyone," Gehlot said in a post on X. "Home Minister Shah and many people of BJP-RSS are against English although the people of the country know that the children of most of the Union ministers are studying abroad and they confuse the people here," the Congress leader said. During childhood, we also used to oppose English but it has become the need of the hour, so we also changed our 'approach', he said. Today, in the era of computers, internet, Artificial Intelligence, the young generation can be completely successful in life through English, Gehlot said. The previous Congress government in Rajasthan established about 3700 Mahatma Gandhi English medium schools to promote education in English among the poor and middle class and rural areas. Due to this decision, about 6.50 lakh students started receiving education in English, he said. The Congress leader added, "The BJP government in the state tried to close these English medium schools but could not take such a step due to their popularity among the public."

Speculation rises over Uddhav-Raj alliance; civic poll seat-sharing major hurdle?

With speculations on rise over a potential alliance between Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) ahead of the upcoming municipal elections, the Uddhav Thackeray faction faces a significant challenge: what kind of proposal should be offered to MNS, and for which seats? The issue is complicated by the comparable influence both parties wield in certain areas, creating a deadlock over the terms of a possible the 2017 municipal elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) won 84 seats, but 42 have since deserted the party. In contrast, MNS currently has no corporators, significantly weakening its position. Sources indicate that Uddhav Thackeray's faction believes its stronger standing in assembly constituencies like Dadar, Worli, Wadala, Sewri, Chembur and Bhandur justifies an alliance on their some leaders within the faction suspect that Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will work to prevent this alliance, wary of its potential to disrupt their dominance in Maharashtra's local politics. Reflecting on past efforts, MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar shared, 'Back then, I tried to bring Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray together. In politics, good or bad things happen when certain events unfold, but I have no idea what will happen next, so it's not appropriate to comment. Time always comes, and no time is ever bad. As the Mahabharata says, 'Time is the greatest force.' There's a lot in that statement.'advertisementShiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut dismissed suggestions of a one-sided approach, stating, 'Who told you there's no positive response? Is this one-sided love, like a Mughal-e-Azam film or Anarkali? Everyone treads carefully in politics. These are political developments, and the future of Mumbai and Maharashtra, along with the pride of Marathi identity, is at stake. They will do what's needed.'The speculation about a Raj-Uddhav alliance stems from their shared history in the undivided Shiv Sena, founded by Bal Thackeray. However, the need to counter the BJP's growing influence have fueled alliance talks. Despite the positive rhetoric from both sides, seat-sharing and local dynamics remain hurdles, and the BJP's potential interference adds further Watch
