What inspired you to start StarKids, and what was the journey like in transitioning from your initial idea to establishing a fully operational salon for children?
StarKids was founded based on my childhood experiences, particularly after losing my father to a brain tumor at a young age. This shaped my belief in the importance of positive childhood experiences for building confidence and security. With a background in child psychology, education, and teaching, I saw a gap in the market for a salon catering specifically to children's needs.
In 2021, I launched the first StarKids salon in Melbourne, Australia, and later expanded internationally to Dubai, where we opened our first branch last year. We are now preparing to launch another branch soon and plan to offer franchise opportunities in the future. The journey has been incredibly exciting and a dream come true.
StarKids goes beyond being just a regular salon—we create a tailored, stress-free experience for children with autism, sensory sensitivities, disabilities, anxiety, and haircut-related phobias. We offer extended appointment times and work closely with parents to understand each child's needs. Our specially trained hairdressers use this information to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable visit, making every haircut a positive experience through collaboration and care.
To make the experience as relaxing as possible, we offer personalized accommodations, such as playing the child's favorite music or shows on iPads, providing fidget toys, and offering books to keep them engaged. Whether it's extra time, additional attention, or a calming approach, we do everything we can to help the child feel at ease during their appointment.
Our staff undergoes regular specialized training, covering child behavior management, communication techniques, and effective ways to interact with children. Through these training sessions, we emphasize the importance of using positive reinforcement to bring out not just the child's outer beauty but also their confidence and inner beauty.
For example, if a hairdresser is giving a child a haircut, she might say, "You look amazing! You're like a little princess!" This combination of skill and encouraging communication helps create a joyful and reassuring experience.
Hiring the right team is crucial, as working with children requires patience, energy, and the ability to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Fortunately, I feel incredibly blessed to work with a team that is not only talented and skilled but also compassionate, kind, and generous. I am very proud of them and grateful to have such dedicated professionals by my side.
The hair donation initiative is very close to my heart. In Australia, we are associated with Hair with Heart , a charity that creates wigs for children with cancer and alopecia. These conditions can deeply affect children, as losing their hair at a young age can significantly impact their self-confidence.
When a young client comes in for a big chop, we encourage them to consider donating their hair to a child in need. As a token of appreciation, we provide a hair donation certificate as a thank-you for their generosity. Through this initiative, we aim to instill values of kindness and compassion in children, ensuring these virtues continue to thrive in future generations. What are the key procurement challenges in sourcing non-toxic products for StarKids, and how do you evaluate suppliers to ensure both safety and cost-effectiveness?
As a mother of two, I found it incredibly challenging to find the right, high-quality products for my kids, and I believe this is a struggle for many parents. At StarKids, we conduct thorough research on products and collaborate with suppliers and distributors who share our values and mission of prioritizing children's wellness. If a brand's core purpose aligns with this, we know we are on the same page.
I am incredibly proud to work with some of the top kids' brands globally, sourcing products from Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the USA, and the UK. Our suppliers and distributors are committed to children's well-being, and we ensure that every product meets high standards of safety, quality, and affordability. We carefully evaluate ingredients, test for quality, and ensure products are ethically sourced, eco-friendly, and non-toxic.
For parents, this means complete peace of mind—when they pick up a product at StarKids, they can trust that it is safe for their children. From a business perspective, maintaining a well-curated selection of high-quality products doesn't require a massive investment, as we retail a variety of best-selling and niche products. You were recognized among the Top 50 Small Business Leaders—what does this achievement mean to you and StarKids?
It's a tremendous honor and a humbling recognition for myself, my team, and the children we serve. It acknowledges the hard work we put in every day and the meaningful impact we are making in children's lives. This achievement has also reinforced my belief that entrepreneurship, when approached with social responsibility, can be a powerful tool for creating waves of positive change in any industry. What is the next big achievement that you want to be known for?
I envision growing StarKids into a franchise model, inviting like-minded women entrepreneurs who share a passion for children's wellness to join my mission. My goal is to build a strong community of women entrepreneurs, expanding the business while fostering empowerment. I truly believe in women supporting women, and I want to create opportunities for more women to step forward and be part of this journey. StarKids is positioned as a premium service. How do you make it accessible to children who may not typically have access to such experiences?
While StarKids is positioned as a premium service, accessibility remains a core priority. Our marketing team continuously offers promotional discounts and special deals to ensure children from all backgrounds can benefit from our services. A key example of this was in Australia after COVID-19 when we faced a major cost-of-living crisis. Following one of the world's longest lockdowns, as children returned to school, we partnered with local schools to provide discounted haircuts, ensuring that every child could access our services. Initiatives like these help us reach a wider community and make our offerings more inclusive. Have you explored partnerships with schools, therapy centers, or hospitals to extend StarKids' services to children who might benefit from a specialized grooming experience?
Absolutely! We are always seeking partnerships and collaborations with child-focused organizations, including schools, hospitals, therapy centers, and sports events. We actively participate in fundraising and sponsorships for sports and charitable initiatives, ensuring we reach as many children as possible. Since launching in Dubai in September 2024, we have been exploring more collaborations to expand our impact. We are currently in discussions with Al Jalila Hospital and hope to organize events with them soon. Our goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children wherever we can. A visit to a salon is often a short experience—how do you create lasting memories and a meaningful impact on children?
StarKids goes beyond being just a regular salon. Even small milestones, like a child's first haircut, are turned into lasting memories with a first haircut certificate, a lock of hair in a keepsake box, and a Polaroid picture taken on the spot. We also offer dad-and-son haircut packages and mom-and-daughter mani-pedi sessions, as well as special birthday experiences. Giving a child a physical gift may bring momentary joy, but spending quality time together—like a mini manicure for their birthday—creates cherished memories that last a lifetime. At StarKids, we want every child to feel valued, celebrated, and special, and our team is dedicated to making that happen. Running a specialized salon like StarKids must come with unique challenges. What's something people would be surprised to learn about the realities of operating a business focused entirely on children?
From the outside, people might see a colorful, cheerful space and think, "What a fun business to run!" Many assume that managing a children's salon is just about business acumen, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. What truly lies beneath is the emotional aspect of running the business—it runs deep. You need a profound understanding of child psychology and behavior, coupled with compassion, kindness, and generosity. If you don't connect with parents, families, and children on an emotional level, you won't be able to make a meaningful impact on their lives. President Donald Trump on Friday threatened a 50% tax on all imports from the European Union as well a 25% tariff on Apple products unless iPhones are made in America. The threats, delivered over social media, reflect Trump's ability to disrupt the global economy with a burst of typing, as well as the reality that his tariffs have yet to produce the trade deals he is seeking or the return of domestic manufacturing he has promised voters. The Republican president said he wants to charge higher import taxes on goods from the EU, a long-standing US ally, than from China, a geopolitical rival that had its tariffs cut to 30% this month so Washington and Beijing could hold negotiations. That post had been preceded by a threat of import taxes against Apple for its plans to continue making its iPhone in Asia. Apple now joins Amazon, Walmart and other major US companies in the White House's crosshairs as they try to respond to the uncertainty and inflationary pressures unleashed by his tariffs. 'I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone's that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else,' Trump wrote. 'If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.' The statement by Trump is critical in that he suggests the company itself would bear the price of tariffs, contradicting his earlier claims as he rolled out a series of aggressive tariffs over the past several months that foreign countries would shoulder the cost of the import taxes. In general, importers pay the tariffs and the costs are often passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. In response to Trump's tariffs on China, Apple CEO Tim Cook said earlier this month that most iPhones sold in the US during the current fiscal quarter would come from India, with iPads and other devices being imported from Vietnam. After Trump rolled out tariffs in April, bank analysts estimated that a $1,200 iPhone would if made in America jump in price anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500. Stocks sold off after Trump's postings, with the S&P 500 index down roughly 1%. The markets have developed a hair trigger sensitivity to the US president's statements, often slumping when he announces high tariffs and rallying when he retreats from those threats. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent tried to provide some clarity on Trump's postings in a Friday interview on the Fox News show 'America's Newsroom.' Bessent said the EU has a 'collective action problem' because its 27 member states are being represented by 'this one group in Brussels,' such that the 'underlying countries don't even know what the EU is negotiating on their behalf.' The Treasury secretary said he was not in a White House meeting this week that Cook attended, but he also spoke with the Apple CEO this week. Bessent said the goal was to have Apple bring more of its computer chip supply chain into the US The core of Trump's argument against the EU is that America runs a 'totally unacceptable' trade deficit with the 27 member states. Countries run trade deficits when they import more goods than they export. From the vantage point of the EU's executive commission, trade with the US is roughly in balance if both goods and services are included. As a global centre for finance and technology, the US runs a trade surplus in services with Europe. That offsets some of the trade gap in goods and puts the imbalance at 48 billion euros ($54 billion). German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the EU's executive commission has his country's full support in working to 'preserve our access to the American market.' 'I think such tariffs help no one, but would just lead to economic development in both markets suffering,' Wadephul said in Berlin. 'So we are still counting on negotiations, and support the European Commission in defending Europe and the European market while at the same time working on persuasion in America.' Trump aides have said the goal of his tariffs was to isolate China and strike new agreements with allies, but the president's tariff threats undermine the logic of those claims. Not only could the EU face higher tariffs than China, but the bloc of member states might have been better off by establishing a broad front with China and other countries against Trump's trade policy, said German economist Marcel Fratscher. 'The strategy of the EU Commission and Germany in the trade conflict with Trump is a total failure,' Fratscher, the head of the German Institute for Economic Research, said on X. 'This was a failure you could see coming - Trump sees Europe's wavering, hesitation and concessions as the weaknesses that they are.' Apple's plans to move iPhone production from China and to India comes as the company begins to feel the effects of the tariff row between the US and Beijing. The world's most valuable company on Thursday reported 5 per cent growth in net profit and revenue for its fiscal second quarter, rising to nearly $24.8 billion and $95.4 billion, respectively, beating estimates. But it also warned of a $900 million hit in its next three fiscal months due to the trade war caused by tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump. The financial hit is a "clear sign that Mr Trump's tariff turmoil is hitting the iPhone maker hard", said Josh Gilbert, a market analyst at brokerage eToro. "For Apple investors, patience may be beginning to wear thin," he said. "After a tumultuous 2024, many were hoping 2025 would provide more optimism, but Trump's tariffs may have squandered that expectation." The US hit China with tariffs of up to 145 per cent. Beijing hit back with up to 125 per cent in levies. While iPhones are, for now, exempt from US tariffs, the components used for their production are not. Apple chief executive Tim Cook made it clear the company's cost-hit projections are based on the assumption the situation will not change, indicating it could get higher or lower, depending on whether the US-China trade war escalates or diffuses. The potential hit is not massive – barely 0.03 per cent of Apple's market capitalisation of $3.2 trillion – but it highlights the effects the trade uncertainty is having on companies. About nine out of every 10 iPhones are made in China, which also comprises 80 per cent of Apple's entire production capacity, data from New York-based research firm Evercore ISI shows. That highlights the country's key role in Apple's supply and logistical chains, with most products and boxes coming with the "Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China" tag. Cheaper labour has also been a key part of China's appeal. That has attracted several American companies, which have made a variety of products, from Levi's jeans and Major League Baseball equipment, to Harley Davidsons and General Motors vehicles, in China. Mr Cook confirmed that the majority of iPhones to be sold in the US market in the coming months will come from India, significantly boosting its presence in the market, where it has been for about eight years. Apple began manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with the original iPhone SE (now the 16e). Production accelerated further when the company announced in 2022 that it would make iPhone 14 models in the country. The announcement is also a boost for India. Apple's shift reinforces Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India programme, with the company having opened its first stores in the country in 2023. Apple will also shift production of its other hardware to Vietnam, including for iPads and Apple Watches, Mr Cook added. Vietnam already manufactures about a 20 per cent of iPads and 90 per cent of wearables, according to Evercore ISI. Other countries and territories in which Apple has production interests include Malaysia, which has factories for Macs, as well as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the US, where the company gets components. In February, Apple announced it will invest more than $500 billion into an artificial intelligence-focused facility in Texas.
