Florida softball's first-year standout named NFCA Freshman of the Year
Florida softball outfielder Taylor Shumaker was named the NFCA Freshman of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Tuesday night at the 2025 NCAA Women's College World Series banquet in Oklahoma City.
The first-year standout was honored with the award based on a unanimous decision, making her the second-ever Gator to win it. The other to achieve the same accolade was outfielder Amanda Lorenz in 2016.
Shumaker is batting .389 and leads the team with 22 home runs, 72 runs scored, 17 doubles, and an .818 slugging percentage heading into the Women's College World Series; her 86 RBI so far this spring are tied for the best mark in the NCAA. She has also drawn 40 walks and is 18-for-19 in stolen base attempts.
The outfielder from Fullerton, California, is currently tied for the Florida single-season record in both home runs and RBI.
The NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes.

Texas A&M has been in contact with Texas transfer outfielder This summer is a big one for Texas A&M baseball head coach Michael Earley, who was surprisingly, to some at least, retained last Friday as Athletic Director Trev Alberts made the final decision to retain the young skipper after the Aggies' 30-26 (11-19 SEC) record, which included a shocking series loss to Missouri that ultimately ended the program's postseason hopes. Knowing that several offensive stars on the 2025 roster, including Wyatt Henseler, and, most likely Jace LaViolette will depart the program, Earley will need to replace their production, which will be tough to do, but isn't an impossible task in today's transfer portal age. After the portal opened on Monday, On3's Pete Nakos reported that Earley and his staff have reached out to Texas transfer outfielder Donovan Jordan, who redshirted with the Longhorns during the 2025 season. Here is what Burnt Orange Nation's Wescott Eberts had to say about Jackson's skilset despite not playing last season: "The 6'1, 210-pounder redshirted at Texas during the 2025 season after signing with the previous coaching staff ranked as the No. 429 player nationally and the No. 73 outfielder, according to Perfect Game." "Jordan arrived on the Forty Acres with a strong swing efficiency built on his hip rotation to produce exit velocities in the 86th percentile, but wasn't able to find playing time in a deep outfield for the Longhorns." While Jordan does not represent an immediate upgrade, he is a young player with plenty of power and potetial at the plate. Missouri is the only competition to land Jordan right now, giving the Aggies a leg up when comparing both program's standing. This is just the start of Earley's activity in the transfer portal. The Women's College World Series is set to begin with an All-Texas showdown to determine the best team in college softball. The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Texas Longhorns will star in a best-of-three series for all the marbles in Oklahoma City. Their collision course will conclude a grueling road to the title-winning series, with both teams besting defending champion Oklahoma. After several thrilling games in this WCWS, both teams are bidding for their first national championship. Their journey to the final began with a 3-0 win over the Florida Gators. Like Texas Tech, Texas went down to the wire with Oklahoma to secure a 4-2 win to advance in the tournament. After getting past the defending champions, the Longhorns returned to their dominant ways to beat Tennessee, 2-0. Thanatharn selected as new UH softball head coach
The University of Hawai'i has ushered in a new era in Rainbow Wahine softball, naming Panita Thanatharn as its next head coach, the school announced Wednesday, four weeks after the conclusion of the 2025 season. Thanatharn, a Long Beach State alumna, spent the past 14 seasons on staff with the 49ers, including the last nine as associate head coach. During her tenure, she helped lead LBSU to four Big West Conference championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. She now takes the reins from legendary head coach Bob Coolen, who retired after 34 seasons at UH. Coolen leaves behind a storied legacy that includes more than 1,100 career wins, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the Women's College World Series in 2010. Among the finalists for the position was longtime UH assistant coach Dee Wisneski. Key returnees for the 2026 season include standout players Milan Ah Yat and Carys Murakami, serving as a strong foundation as Thanatharn begins her tenure.
