Another highly-touted, class of 2026 basketball recruit announces UNC visit
The North Carolina Tar Heels have an extensive list of offers in their 2026 basketball recruiting class, but are still searching for that elusive, first commitment.
On August 11, 4-star small forward Maximo Adams announced he'll be visiting UNC this fall. Earlier this month, North Carolina announced that Cole Cloer, who grew up 30 minutes from campus, will also visit Chapel Hill this fall.
The Tar Heels just received some good news on Wednesday afternoon. Top-25 recruit Cameron Holmes, a small forward who hails from Millennium High School in Goodyear, Ariz., announced he'll be visiting UNC.
According to his 247Sports recruiting profile, Holmes is a 4-star recruit ranked 24th nationally, ninth amongst small forwards and fourth in Arizona. According to his 247Sports Composite Rankings, Holmes is a 5-star recruit ranked 25th nationally, 10th amongst his position and fifth overall in Arizona.
Holmes also has visits scheduled to Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, Gonzaga and Arizona, the last of which could have a stronger pull, given its proximity to Goodyear.
Wing is a position of focus for North Carolina in its next recruiting class, with Holmes one of seven small forwards to receive an offer. Joining Holmes is Adams, Cloer, Bryson Howard, Tajh Ariza, Anthony Thompson and Qayden Samuels.
If you look at past Tar Heels teams, their best ones have productive small forwards. Marcus Ginyard was a key cog on UNC's 2009 National Championship squad, plus Theo Pinson was invaluable on the 2017 title-winning team.
Drake Powell blossomed as North Carolina's 2024-2025 season progressed, but he only made it to the Round of 64. If the Tar Heels can start locking down commitments early, they'll be set for 2026 and beyond.

Donegan advances to US Amateur semifinals to the delight of his large, vocal gallery
SAN FRANCISCO -- Niall Shiels Donegan, the Scot who grew up in nearby Mill Valley, advanced to the U.S. Amateur semifinals Friday at The Olympic Club to the delight of his large, vocal gallery. Donegan — set for his first season at North Carolina after two years at Northwestern — outlasted Notre Dame junior Jacob Modleski with a par on the 19th hole in windy conditions. 'I feel like with this crowd, I know so many of them, it just feels very natural. ... I can't thank them enough for being here,' Donegan said. 'I'm just trying to enjoy the moment. ... It's amazing they're giving me so much support.' Donegan pulled even with a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th. 'You've just got to stay so patient,' Donegan said. 'You can't get ahead of yourself… one hole is its own event, and it's just all about staying in the present, not thinking ahead.' Donegan will face rising Tennessee sophomore Jackson Herrington, a 4-and-2 winner over Jimmy Abdo of Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. 'I didn't play too well today,' Herrington said. 'I was pretty mad at myself for that. I felt like I kept him in it a little too long, but I got the job done.' Herrington and Donegan were among the 17 players who advanced from a 20-man playoff Wednesday morning to determine the final 64 for match play. Donegan's father, Lawrence, was a longtime golf correspondent for The Guardian. In the other semifinal, Georgia teen Mason Howell will face Oklahoma State junior Eric Lee. They each won their matches 1 up, with the 18-year-old Howell beating John Daly II, and Lee edging 16-year-old Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. 'I like the fact that it's just me and one other guy,' Lee said. 'I don't really need to worry about what I shot. Just need to worry about beating the other guy.' Howell qualified for the U.S. Open this year with rounds of 63-63 from the Atlanta sectional. Daly, a senior-to-be at Arkansas, is the son of two-time major champion John Daly. ___

Former MSU running back Nathan Carter scores long touchdown for the Atlanta Falcons
It's been a big night for Spartans in the NFL. Shortly after former MSU defensive back and current member of the Tennessee Titans, Kendell Brooks took an interception all the way for a touchdown, Nathan Carter fired back and broke a huge run for a 43-yard touchdown for his Atlanta Falcons. Carter, who, like Brooks, is vying for a roster spot in the NFL, managed to take what looked like a simple inside handoff, found a seam, and showed some nice top-end speed to take it all the way to the end zone. You can watch it below: Kendell Brooks and Nathan Carter are both fighting for roster spots right now, and plays like that will make a great case for them to stick around in the league.
