UNC basketball, Hubert Davis get recruit to help replace Drake Powell on 2025-26 roster

Hubert Davis is adding an international prospect to UNC basketball's 2025-26 roster, filling an area of need for the Tar Heels. Luke Bogavac, a 6-foot-5 Montenegrin wing, has committed to UNC, according to several reports. ESPN's Jonathan Givony first broke the news on May 31. Advertisement A 21-year-old player for SC Derby in the Montenegrin Basketball League and ABA League, Bogavac averaged 14.9 points on 45% shooting, including 40% from 3-point range, along with 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in the 2024-25 season. Kyan Evans (Colorado State), Jarin Stevenson (Alabama), Henri Veesaar (Arizona), Jonathan Powell (West Virginia) and Jaydon Young (Virginia Tech) are UNC's additions via the portal. Bogavac scored 19 or more points in eight of his final 15 ABA games, dropping a season-high 27 points – with five 3-pointers – on April 25. He also had 24 points, including seven treys, on March 30. The addition gives Hubert Davis' roster some much-needed shooting and stability as a playmaker on the wing. As it stands, Bogavac figures to slide in as a starter in a lineup that could include Evans, senior leader Seth Trimble, Wilson and Veesaar. 'We are just one big family': How UNC women's lacrosse capped perfect season with NCAA title

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — From the inaugural faceoff in February to the final buzzer on championship weekend, UNC women's lacrosse never took its foot off the gas. The Tar Heels were the gold standard for 2025, and on Sunday, May 25, at Gillette Stadium, they left no doubt they were the best team in the country, storming past Northwestern 12-8 to claim their fourth national championship. Advertisement This marked UNC's first time in championship weekend since their title win in 2022, and their prowess throughout the tournament points to a dynasty in the making. The centerpiece is redshirt freshman Chloe Humphrey. Chloe notched four goals and an assist in the win over the Wildcats on Sunday, bumping her up to 11 goals scored over two games this holiday weekend. MORE HEELS WINS: Tar Heels hammer Tigers, win ACC Tournament championship LIVE UPDATES: See how the NCAA women's lacrosse final played out Chloe also got to win the title with two of her sisters on the roster, Ashley and Nicole. Ashley and Chloe even collaborated for a dynamic goal in the second quarter to put the Tar Heels up 5-1, showcasing the dominant Humphrey connection that's been terrorizing defenses all season. Advertisement 'It's just so awesome,' Chloe said. 'That connection and being able to live out our dream together.' While Chloe gets the spotlight with her elite scoring, it's Ashley's vision that has been setting up the UNC attack all season long. In the fourth quarter, Ashley dished her fourth assist of the game and 90th of the season to set a new single-season program record. 'She's a point guard for us back there,' head coach Jenny Levy said. 'When things are not going right for us, she understands that. She tells people what they need to know.' After watching her sister Nicole win the title with UNC in 2022, Ashley made the decision to transfer from Stanford, where she spent her undergrad years. Ashley became determined to play on the same stage her sister did. Advertisement 'Just having the opportunity to be here is what I really wanted,' Ashley said. '(Winning) is just the icing on the cake.' While she knew she was getting to play with two of her sisters, she had no idea she would make 36 more. 'I have 38 sisters,' Ashley said. 'The entire team, the staff, we are just one big family, and although we have some DNA in common, everybody on this team is a family.' Now, Ashley, Chloe, Nicole and their UNC family can celebrate reaching the ultimate goal. And they did it together. 'It definitely took a lot of sacrifices, a lot of injuries, a lot of comebacks,' Ashley said. 'This is something that no one can ever take away from us.' Chloe put it simply: 'We can call ourselves national champions now.' This article originally appeared on The Fayetteville Observer: UNC women's lacrosse finishes undefeated for NCAA title

Bill Belichick's North Carolina contract changes on June 1. What does it mean?

Soon after North Carolina hired six-time Super Bowl champion head coach Bill Belichick in December, an interesting, and possibly significant, date emerged: June 1. That's when Belichick's buyout drops by $9 million if he were to leave the Tar Heels on his own. At the time, the contractual provision looked like a potential escape valve if the former New England Patriots head coach wanted to return to the NFL. After an offseason of watching his personal life overshadow his professional life in his first foray into college coaching, the speculation has taken a different turn, making the subject worth revisiting. Advertisement Though fans typically think of buyouts going to coaches who get fired without cause — like Texas A&M owing Jimbo Fisher more than $70 million by canning him in 2023 — the payouts work both ways. When Belichick signed his formal UNC contract in January, he agreed to pay the Tar Heels $10 million in liquidated damages if he chose to exit. On Sunday, that figure drops to $1 million, owed within 180 days. It remains $1 million through the rest of the five-year contract. To be clear, he has given no indication that he's looking to quit. This month, his Tar Heels picked up a pair of non-binding oral commitments in the 2026 class, including Travis Burgess, the No. 30 quarterback in the 247Sports composite rankings. But the fact that the 73-year-old Belichick was new to the college game and recruiting led to questions about whether he'd want to return to the pros. He needs only 15 NFL victories to pass Don Shula for the most in league history. Raiders minority owner Tom Brady reached out to Belichick about Las Vegas' coaching vacancy in January, before Belichick and UNC finalized their contract. Since then, Belichick's girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, has become one of the biggest figures of the offseason. Belichick has said he has personal and professional relationships with the 24-year-old. They have intersected at times, including when he asked the Tar Heels to copy her on emails. Hudson shot down a question from CBS to Belichick about how they met with a now-famous line: 'We're not talking about this.' If Belichick and/or Hudson is unhappy with the situation surrounding his Tar Heels tenure and the media circus, the decreased buyout makes it more manageable for him to walk away. It's common for buyouts like Belichick's to decrease over time, regardless of whether they'll be paid by the school (if a coach is fired for cause) or the coach (if he leaves for another job). For example, UCF's Scott Frost — another coach hired this cycle — would owe the Knights $6.5 million if he left before July 2026. The figure drops by $1 million annually. Advertisement Ryan Day would owe Ohio State $6 million if he quit today. The buyout falls to $4 million on Feb. 1 and dwindles to $0 in February 2031 under the new contract he and the school signed earlier this year. Belichick's contract runs through the 2029 calendar year. Belichick makes $10 million annually ($1 million in base pay, $9 million in supplemental pay). The first three years are fully guaranteed if the school fires him without cause before the end of 2027. There is no buyout specified after that. On-field bonuses range from $150,000 for winning eight regular-season games to $1.75 million for a national championship.

UNC baseball rolls past Holy Cross in Chapel Hill Regional opening game

UNC baseball rolls past Holy Cross in Chapel Hill Regional opening game After being selected as the nation's No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the UNC baseball team welcomed in Holy Cross, Oklahoma, and Nebraska to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for the Chapel Hill Regional. In the No. 1 vs No. 4 seed game in the first round, the Diamond Heels took on Holy Cross and breezed by the Crusaders 4-0 on Friday afternoon. ACC Pitcher of the Year, Jake Knapp, took the mound for the Tar Heels in the top of the first inning and struck out the side, fanning the entire first inning to set the tone for the game. Knapp ended up throwing 8.1 innings, giving up four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 119 pitches. Walker McDuffie closed out the final two-thirds of the ninth inning and recorded one strikeout. Danny Macchiarola threw the first 4.1 innings of the game for Holy Cross, giving up all four runs that North Carolina scored in the outing. He allowed seven hits with just one strikeout. Derek Volz closed out the final 4.2 innings scoreless with three strikeouts. Hunter Stokely got the Tar Heels on the board after three scoreless innings with an RBI single to center, scoring Gavin Gallaher. Once the first run was on the board, North Carolina started raining in the runs that inning. Two batters later, Tyson Bass would score Stokely on a double to left, followed on the very next at-bat by S Angelo scoring Bass. UNC would go up 3-0 in the fourth. Gallaher had an RBI single in the fifth inning, scoring Jackson Van De Brake as the final run that North Carolina would score in the game, winning 4-0. The Tar Heels will now play the winner of the Oklahoma vs. Nebraska game on Saturday, May 31st, at 6:00pm ET at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. Knapp improves to 13-0, leads No. 5 seed Tar Heels past Holy Cross 4-0 in regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Jake Knapp scattered four hits over 8 1/3 innings and fifth-seeded North Carolina opened the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 win over Holy Cross on Friday in the Chapel Hill Regional. Knapp (13-0) threw a career-high 119 pitches and exited for Walker McDuffie when Chris Baillargeon got the fourth hit for the Crusaders in the ninth inning. North Carolina (43-12), hosting its 13th regional while making its 37th NCAA appearance, matches up with the winner of the Nebraska-Oklahoma game and Holy Cross (31-26) meets the loser on Saturday. The Tar Heels only had seven hits but bunched them together. Gavin Gallaher had a one-out triple in the fourth and Hunter Stokely singled him home. With two outs, Tyson Bass had an RBI double and Sam Angelo singled in Bass. Jackson Van De Brake had a double to lead off the fifth and Gallaher's single drove him home. The defense helped Knapp, who walked three and struck out seven, with three double plays. Knapp induced a shallow fly to center and followed with a strikeout after Holy Cross loaded the bases in the sixth. Danny Macchiarola (9-5) allowed all of the Tar Heels runs and hits before Derek Volz threw 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief, though he issued three walks. Holy Cross won the Patriot League regular-season and tournament for the first time ever to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017 and 12th time overall. ___ AP college sports:
