2026 UNC basketball recruiting target gives insight into ideal college program
The UNC basketball program has quite the 2026 recruiting class, extending offers to 17 players, but still lacks a commitment.
One of those 17 offers is to power forward Quinn Costello, the top-ranked recruit in Massachusetts and a Top-75 recruit nationally. Costello brings the type of versatility collegiate programs covet, an asset that helped North Carolina make a wild run to the 2022 National Championship game.
As the Tar Heels ramp up their recruitment of Costello, he recently gave insight into his ideal fit for a college basketball program, speaking to InsideCarolina at the UAA Finals last week:
"I think the big thing for me is the relationship I have with the coach and the coaching staff," Costello said. "I find myself being the most successful in systems and programs where the relationships between the players and the coaches are super strong. I think a strong bond and trust between them is important."
Despite UNC only having one championship under Hubert Davis' reign as head coach, winning the 2023-2024 ACC Regular Season Title, Hubert knows how to recruit. He landed 5-star, Top-10 power forward Caleb Wilson in North Carolina's 2025 recruiting class, plus Drake Powell and Ian Jackson last offseason.
There's already a few class of 2026 standouts who recently included the Tar Heels amongst their final schools, such as 6'7 wing Cole Cloer, who grew up 30 minutes from Chapel Hill and will play his final season of high school ball at IMG Academy.
Landing the 6'10" Costello would be a major recruiting victory for Hubert and the UNC program. What kind of impression will North Carolina continue to make on Costello?

High-profile game ahead for 49ers
Next week, UNC Charlotte's 49ers football team starts fall camp, beginning the one-month countdown to the season opener. The 49ers' 2025 debut marks a first for the school: playing at Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers. On Aug. 29, Charlotte will play Appalachian State University at the NFL stadium, kicking off at 7 p.m. on the Friday of Labor Day weekend. It's part of the annual Duke's Mayo Classic series of early-season college football games. ESPNU will air the game, which brings more of a spotlight because the schedule is much busier on Aug. 28 (the day before) and Aug. 30 (the day after). 'We're seeing a lot of excitement,' Miller Yoho, spokesperson at the Charlotte Sports Foundation, the nonprofit that runs the Duke's Mayo Classic, told CBJ. 'A Friday night prime-time game will be special.' The sports foundation embraces regional rivalries like Charlotte-Appalachian State, Yoho added, pointing to the easy proximity for both schools' fans. Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark headline 2025 Wyndham Championship field
The field for the 2025 Wyndham Championship is set and as strong as its ever been – from Wyndham Clark to Jordan Spieth and fellow past major winner Hideki Matsuyama. Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., will welcome several notable names looking to improve their position heading into the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Since the creation of the FedEx Cup in 2007, the Wyndham Championship has been the final event of the FedEx Cup regular season, and only the top 70 in the season-long standings will advance to Memphis for the first of three playoff events. Rickie Fowler, who entered the week at No. 63, made the cut at the 3M Open so he likely will survive the cut off for the top 70 but he still has work to do if he intends to move on to the second playoff event, the BMW Championship, which is limited to the top 50. Tom Kim, a past champion at the Wyndham in 2022, missed the cut at the 3M Open so will need a big week to make the playoffs. So, too, will Adam Scott, in the 80s, and Max Homa, who sits outside the top 100. Clark, Spieth, Matsuyama, Tony Finau, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre and Keegan Bradley are among the players guaranteed to be walking to Memphis next week but have other incentives for playing, including to enhance their Ryder Cup aspirations. Here's the full field for the final regular-season event of the 2025 Tour season: This article originally appeared on Golfweek: Wyndham Championship 2025 field: Who's playing at Sedgefield?
