Shops closed and transport services were affected in various regions, including Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj. The markets in Bhadrak remained non-operational with disrupted public transport.
The protest resulted in substantial traffic congestion on the Chennai-Kolkata Highway, with numerous vehicles stranded. Bus operations were affected throughout various regions of the state.
The Congress, alongside other opposition groups including the All India Forward Bloc, organised the bandh.
They held the state government accountable for not addressing the student's appeals for assistance.
The demonstrators sought a thorough investigation and requested enhanced security measures for women's safety in the state.
Previously, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had organised a 'Balasore Bandh' to protest against the Odisha government. BJD leader and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the state government and police regarding the alleged force used against BJD protesters involved in the case.
On Tuesday, eight opposition parties, including Congress, collectively announced an 'Odisha Bandh' on July 17, seeking the State Higher Education Minister's resignation and a judicial inquiry into the incident.
The student had reportedly experienced continuous sexual harassment from the Head of Department (HoD) at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. Despite submitting a formal complaint and repeatedly requesting assistance from the college principal, her grievances remained unattended, resulting in her self-immolation on campus last Saturday.

She received initial treatment at Balasore district hospital before being transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her injuries on Monday, as confirmed by hospital officials.
Subsequently, authorities arrested the college's HoD, Samira Kumar Sahu, and Principal, Dilip Ghose, in relation to the incident.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As per the complaint filed by the girl, she met Jena for the first time in June 2023 during Raja festivities and their friendship grew after that. She has alleged that she had to abort a two-month-old pregnancy in Feb last year. She said Jena convinced her to abort promising that he would divorce his wife and marry her. Jayaprakash Narayan's statue unveiled; CM Yogi lauds his legacy
: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday unveiled a statue of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan at the newly renovated Asuran Crossing in Gorakhpur, praising his contributions to Indian democracy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Addressing a gathering on the occasion, the CM described JP as a true Gandhian who lived for the nation, Indian values, and the spirit of democracy. "When it seemed that Indian democracy would collapse under Congress's dictatorship during the Emergency, Jayaprakash Narayan gave it new life," he said, adding, "He dedicated every moment of his life to the service of the nation and its people." Highlighting JP's roots in Sitab Diara village on UP-Bihar border, the CM recalled that the socialist leader had once demanded a health centre there in the memory of his wife Prabhavati Devi. "Despite ruling in his name, previous govts failed to fulfil that wish. We have now built a 100-bed health centre in his village and named it after her," he said. CM Yogi appreciated the efforts of Gorakhpur district administration, Gorakhpur Development Authority (GDA), and Nagar Nigam in completing the beautification work and restoring the statue at the intersection. He called the initiative a model for other cities to follow. The CM also paid tribute to late Dr Ashok Kumar, a senior professor from Gorakhpur University, who played a key role in installing JP's statue more than a decade ago. "Though he is no longer with us, his family's presence today is significant," he added.

Cong mulling Bihar poll boycott with RJD, oppn doing a political ‘rudali': JD(U)
Patna: The issue of "poll boycott" is slowly and steadily catching the fancy of the opposition in Bihar. The Congress on Thursday came out in strong support of boycotting the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar over the controversy surrounding the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a day after leader of opposition in the assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav hinted at the possibility. Interacting with reporters at the state assembly, state Congress president Rajesh Kumar said the Constitution gives every citizen the right to vote but the Election Commission looks hell-bent on snatching this right. "If the EC went ahead with its agenda, we would have no option other than launching a massive battle which could be in the form of poll boycott, fighting on the streets or even more," state Congress chief told the media on Thursday, adding: "The INDIA bloc could go to any extent over the issue." Saying they don't have any faith left in the current Election Commission, Kumar said had the EC been led by T N Seshan or K J Rao, they could have been at ease. "But we can't trust the current poll body which has already said that 'Hamlog badal chuke hain…Pahalewale nahin hain (We have changed. We are not the same as before)," Kumar said, declaring the INDIA bloc would together launch an intensive agitation. The Congress state chief said they would study the final voter's list before declaring their plans. "But several electors have already complained they can't find their names in the electoral rolls at their booths, or they can't see their EPIC number. That means the INDIA bloc must be ready for any kind of agitation," Kumar added. The month-long SIR drive will conclude on Friday. Although the main objective of the drive was an intensified revision aimed at "ensuring that the names of all eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll (ER) so as to enable them to exercise their franchise, no ineligible voter is included in the electoral rolls and also to introduce complete transparency in the process of addition or deletion of electors in the electoral rolls," this triggered massive political protests, from Patna to Delhi. However, this not only united the opposition, but also gave an important issue ahead of the upcoming assembly elections scheduled to be held in Oct/Nov this year. Mocking the opposition threat, JD(U) said it has become a political "rudali" nowadays. "There is a tradition of rudali in Rajasthan, where women are called to cry when someone dies. The opposition is playing a similar role," JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said.
