Shops closed and transport services were affected in various regions, including Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj. The markets in Bhadrak remained non-operational with disrupted public transport.
The protest resulted in substantial traffic congestion on the Chennai-Kolkata Highway, with numerous vehicles stranded. Bus operations were affected throughout various regions of the state.
The Congress, alongside other opposition groups including the All India Forward Bloc, organised the bandh.
They held the state government accountable for not addressing the student's appeals for assistance.
The demonstrators sought a thorough investigation and requested enhanced security measures for women's safety in the state.
Previously, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had organised a 'Balasore Bandh' to protest against the Odisha government. BJD leader and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the state government and police regarding the alleged force used against BJD protesters involved in the case.
On Tuesday, eight opposition parties, including Congress, collectively announced an 'Odisha Bandh' on July 17, seeking the State Higher Education Minister's resignation and a judicial inquiry into the incident.
The student had reportedly experienced continuous sexual harassment from the Head of Department (HoD) at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. Despite submitting a formal complaint and repeatedly requesting assistance from the college principal, her grievances remained unattended, resulting in her self-immolation on campus last Saturday.

She received initial treatment at Balasore district hospital before being transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her injuries on Monday, as confirmed by hospital officials.
Subsequently, authorities arrested the college's HoD, Samira Kumar Sahu, and Principal, Dilip Ghose, in relation to the incident.

MEERUT Launching a blistering attack on political adversaries, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday accused the Congress of engineering massacres in UP's Sambhal in the post-Independence era and said the Samajwadi Party, 'as a loyal disciple of Congress,' tried to cover up their sins. (File Photo) 'Those who sinned against Sambhal will face retribution. They hid the truth of the Sambhal massacres for vote-bank politics. We are not here for appeasement — we are here to preserve our heritage,' Adityanath said at a public rally after inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of 222 development projects worth ₹659 crore in the district's Bahjoi town. Adityanath described the town as a sacred symbol of Hindu faith, deeply embedded in Sanatan Dharma and ancient scriptures, asserting that those who tried to suppress this truth for political gains would face consequences for their 'sins'. He linked Sambhal to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, saying that the Skanda Purana and Vishnu Purana refer to it as the future birthplace of Lord Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu in kalyug. He warned those attempting to rewrite history or 'malign Sanatan Dharma,' saying that such malicious conspiracies would be 'firmly crushed.' Yogi added: 'Their own backgrounds are controversial, so they see our traditions as controversial. But our legacy is not up for debate.' Adityanath delved into the town's overlooked past, claiming that Sambhal was once home to 68 pilgrimage sites, 19 sacred wells and ancient parikrama routes that were deliberately destroyed by foreign invaders. 'They desecrated our shrines and erased the truth,' he said, pledging to restore all 68 sites and 19 wells. Drawing inspiration from Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar — known for reviving temples in Kashi and Somnath — the CM promised a cultural renaissance for Sambhal. 'True development is about preserving our roots while building the future,' he said. The chief minister cited the examples of Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and the Ram Temple in Ayodhya to emphasise that religious rejuvenation and development can go hand in hand. 'If the redevelopment of Kashi and Ayodhya is possible, why not Sambhal? Why can't we restore this holy land of Lord Kalki and Harihar? That is why the government has come to you,' Adityanath said. Taking a dig at past governments, Adityanath accused them of enabling lawlessness and mafia raj. 'Girls were unsafe, traders lived in fear. Today, the only ones insecure are rioters. Mahakal is now delivering justice,' he said. Tensions flared in Sambhal last year when a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid here was carried out following claims that a Harihar temple previously stood at the site. Days later, during a second round of the survey, protesting locals clashed with security personnel, which led to the death of four people and injuries to dozens. He emphasised that under his government, 8.5 lakh youth have received jobs in eight years, including 60,200 recent police recruits. He contrasted this with previous regimes, saying: 'They nurtured one mafia per district. We promote 'One District, One Product.' The 222 projects inaugurated/launched span sectors such as education, roads, vocational training, clean drinking water, anganwadi centres and school infrastructure. The CM also laid the foundation stone for the new district magistrate office and integrated residential complexes, participating in Vedic rituals. Highlighting the government's commitment to inclusive growth, the CM distributed cheques, house keys and certificates to beneficiaries of various welfare schemes. He also launched the 'Sambhal Samvad' mobile app for better citizen engagement. In a symbolic gesture, the chief minister performed the traditional 'Annaprashan' ceremony for infants and planted saplings to promote environmental awareness. He inspected archaeological relics unearthed in Sambhal, further underlining the region's historical importance. Wrapping up his address, Adityanath praised the courage of Sambhal's people who, he said, never bowed to rioters. He invoked upcoming national and religious events — Raksha Bandhan, Kakori Memorial Day, Independence Day and Janmashtami — urging citizens to hoist the Tricolour and uphold national pride. 'The projects we launched today are just a glimpse,' he said. 'The double-engine government will ensure both the preservation of Sambhal's glorious past and the building of its bright future.'

BJP accuses Rahul Gandhi of displaying ‘selective outrage' over ECI remarks
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday (August 7, 2025) accused Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of showing 'selective outrage', stating that his allegation about 'large-scale' electoral roll fraud was a sign of 'frustration and election rage'. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said Mr. Gandhi had completely lost his 'composure in the agony of losing power'. 'The ideologically hollow Congress party is systematically attacking constitutional institutions. It cannot be ruled out that there is a larger conspiracy against India's democracy and Constitution behind this calculated deceit. After all, their family's history is also filled with the dark chapter of the 'Emergency',' he posted on X. Mr. Pradhan said by attacking the EC, Mr. Gandhi was insulting the discerning decision of the public, which was universally accepted in a democracy. 'Where was Rahul Gandhi when the EC invited every party to file complaints regarding the SIR [Special Intensive Revision] in Bihar? Neither Congress nor any party from the INDI Alliance approached the EC at that time,' he said. At a press conference, BJP MP and spokesperson Sambit Patra said the Congress leader was displaying 'selective outrage' as he never made such accusations with respect to the States where his party won. 'When they got 99 seats in the Lok Sabha election, the Congress celebrated all over the country. They did not allege the EC was compromised,' he said. Mr. Patra said the BJP, which remained in the Opposition for long, never resorted to the kind of indecorous language used by Mr. Gandhi. 'He threatened that if the Opposition comes to power, the EC officials would face 'serious consequences',' he said, adding that the language showed his 'frustration' and 'election rage'. 'If you think that there were irregularities in the Maharashtra polls, you should have instructed your partymen to approach the court within the prescribed time period. You did not go to court, your proxy petitioned the Bombay High Court. The court dismissed the plea terming it a gross abuse of the process of law. Then, a Constitutional Bench of High Court found no evidence of fraud or illegal voting and emphasised that the petitioner had failed to demonstrate any personal legal injury or enforceable right...,' said Mr. Patra. Referring to the EC's letter to Mr. Gandhi asking him to submit through an affidavit the relevant papers supporting the charges made on Thursday, the BJP leader said the Congress's Karnataka unit had gone to the EC on August 3. 'On August 6, the EC asked them to come on August 8. However, Mr. Gandhi held the press conference a day earlier...,' said Mr. Patra. The BJP leader said after Mr. Gandhi raised objections related to the Maharashtra election for the first time in November 2024, the EC had invited him for a discussion. However, he did not meet them. Then, taking note of his news article published on the election, it again sought a meeting, but he did not go. Responding to Mr. Gandhi's 'My word is my oath' remarks, Mr. Patra said the Congress leader's words had 'no meaning'. 'That is the reason you have to give the details in an affidavit to the EC,' he said. Questioning Mr. Gandhi's charge that the BJP used the Pulwama terror attack to reverse 'anti-incumbency', the BJP leader asked if it was an attempt to insinuate that the attack was orchestrated by India. He said the manner in which the Congress leader raised doubts about Operation Sindoor, air strikes, and the surgical strike, and targeted constitutional institutions, the people would start accusing him of being a 'traitor'. Four-term BJP MP from Bangalore Central P. C. Mohan, through a post on X, added: 'Electoral rolls are prepared as per the RP Act, 1950, and the Rules, 1960. Draft rolls (SSR 2024) were shared with Congress in Nov 2024. Not a single appeal was filed after the final publication. Now, after losing Bangalore Central, they cry vote theft at a press conference.'
