Tripura cops probe confinement, sexual assault of B'desh girl

Time of Indiaa day ago
Agartala: Gomati district police have launched an investigation into allegations of confinement and sexual assault involving a 19-year-old Bangladeshi girl in Udaipur's Chanban locality.
The accused, Zakir Hossain, remains at large as authorities probe human trafficking and illegal migration aspects, additional SP Rushikesh Desai said.
The investigation began after police received a tip-off from local residents, leading them to discover the girl at Hossain's residence. She claimed to be from Habiganj district in Bangladesh's Sylhet division and alleged she was held captive for three weeks after illegally entering India due to a romantic relationship with Hossain.
"When I wanted to return, I was not allowed and confined to a room for 22 days during which I was forced into sex. On Thursday, I raised an alarm and the neighbours informed the police," the girl said. She added that her belongings were confiscated to prevent her from contacting her family.
The girl met Hossain online, who allegedly misled her with promises of a new life together, despite being married with children.
Following legal procedures and medical examinations, the girl was handed over to the BSF for repatriation under new MHA guidelines.
"Looking at the allegations against Zakir, we are investigating whether she took shelter in the house to stay back in India and made the allegations owing to a dispute," said a police officer investigating the case.

Gurugram's Missing Maids and Sanitation Workers Linked to Immigration Crackdown: Reports

The sudden disappearance of domestic workers and sanitation staff in parts of Gurugram has led to widespread concern and speculation among residents, particularly in areas like Ardee City. A viral Reddit post titled "Maid and Cook vanished suddenly from Gurgaon," highlighted the issue, with the user noting that maids, cooks, and garbage collectors had become unreachable and absent since Sunday. "Since Sunday there is a issue we all are facing in Ardee City, the maids and cooks are vanished suddenly and their cells are not reachable as well," the user wrote in the r/gurgaon subreddit. "The garbage collection guy is not coming though. What is the reason?' they added. As the post went viral, social media users speculated that the disappearance of domestic workers might be linked to the recent immigration drive targeting undocumented immigrants, particularly from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Several users shared their experience with maids and workers at their homes and offices who had stopped coming in the last few days. "They're detaining them, 90 per cent of them are illegals from Bangladesh. My maid is also one and she told us that this is happening and she's scared," said one user while another added: "They were illegal Bangladeshis. Now they are either getting deported or voluntarily leaving India." A third commented: "If you have lived in Gurgaon long enough, you would know that 90 per cent of Bengali Muslims are illegal immigrants." See the post here: Illegal immigration crackdown According to a Times of India report, the government initiated the drive to identify Bangladeshi and Rohingya living illegally in the city. The drive led to around 250 people being rounded up at four holding centres located in Badshahpur, Sector 10A, Sector 40, and Sector 1 in Manesar. As of the last update, barring 10, who will be deported, the remaining had been allowed to go by the authorities. The move has led to housing societies that depended on them for domestic chores, struggling for alternatives, as per a report in The Indian Express. 'We have identified 10 Bangladeshis (staying here illegally) from those kept at the holding centres. The deportation process is already underway for seven of them,' Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Dr Arpit Jain, told the publication. The drive to round up the illegals was initiated after a letter from the Union Home Ministry directed the state governments to prepare a standard operating procedure to deport, in sufficient numbers, Bangladeshis and Rohingya staying illegally. "If any illegal foreign national is found living in any state/district, he will be detained and kept in a Special Holding Centre…the police is conducting special search operations for illegal foreign nationals to maintain law and order and peace in district Gurugram, for which Special Holding Centres have been acquired vide letter… dated 18.07.2025 of this office,' read a July 22 order from District Magistrate.

10 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants detained by Gurugram Police, deportation underway

Gurugram Police on Saturday detained ten Bangladeshi nationals who were found to be living illegally in the city, according to police officials. Identification documents recovered from them confirmed their Bangladeshi nationality. Asaduddin Owaisi said that those being labelled as illegal immigrants are "the poorest of the poor," who are mostly slum-dwellers.(PTI/Representational Image) Sandeep Kumar, PRO of Gurugram Police, said, 'Ten illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been detained. Bangladeshi documents have been recovered from them. The process to deport them has begun.' He said that those being labelled as illegal immigrants are "the poorest of the poor," who are mostly slum-dwellers and work as domestic workers and rag-pickers. Owaisi argued that they were being targeted repeatedly because they couldn't challenge "police atrocities." He stated that there have been reports of Indian citizens being pushed into Bangladesh at gunpoint. "Police in different parts of India have been illegally detaining Bengali-speaking Muslim citizens and accusing them of being Bangladeshi. There have been disturbing reports of Indian citizens being pushed into Bangladesh at gunpoint. This government acts strong with the weak and weak with the strong. Most of those who are accused of being 'illegal immigrants' are the poorest of the poor: slum-dwellers, cleaners, domestic workers, rag-pickers, etc. They have been targeted repeatedly because they are not in a position to challenge police atrocities," the AIMIM chief posted on X. "Police do not have the power to detain people just because they speak a particular language. These wide-net detentions are illegal," Owaisi added as he shared an image of an order of the Office of District Magistrate in Gurugram on his X account, where it has been mentioned that the state government has made a standard operating procedure (SOP) to deport Bangladeshi citizens and Rohingyas.

Verification drive: 4 holding centres emptied in Gurgaon, cops to restrict detentions to confirmed foreign nationals

Four community centres in Gurgaon will no longer be used as holding facilities for Bengali-speaking migrant workers suspected of being Bangladeshi or Rohingya. The Gurgaon Police said it will only look at confirmed foreign nationals and individuals under strong suspicion. The four centres were at Badshahpur, Sector 10A, Sector 40, and Sector 1 in Manesar. A police spokesperson on Friday said the centres have been emptied. 'We have identified 10 Bangladeshis (staying here illegally) from those kept at the holding centres. The deportation process is already underway for seven of them,' Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Dr Arpit Jain, told The Indian Express on Saturday. Dr Jain added that while the detention of suspected foreigners at these centres has been paused for now, the verification drive is ongoing. 'Now, only those confirmed to be Bangladeshis, or those under strong suspicion of being foreign nationals, will be detained and taken to these centres pending verification,' he said. Asked about the total number of men kept at the centres, he said many had been brought in across the week and several were released the same day or within a day or two. The men were released once the local district magistrate in their hometown confirmed the validity of their documents. Over the past week, several migrant workers — mostly daily-wage labourers — were rounded up by the police as part of the drive, sparking panic among the Bengali-speaking migrant community and prompting many to leave the city. Families had claimed they had valid documentation — Aadhaar, PAN and ration cards and voter IDs — but the police were refusing to let their loved ones go. The move also left housing societies that depended on them for sanitation services struggling in terms of door-to-door waste collection. The police operations began after a letter from the Union Home Ministry, directing state governments to prepare a standard operating procedure to deport, in sufficient numbers, Bangladeshis and Rohingya staying illegally. '… if any illegal foreign national is found living in any state/district, he will be detained and kept in a Special Holding Centre… the police is conducting special search operations for illegal foreign nationals to maintain law and order and peace in district Gurugram, for which Special Holding Centres have been acquired vide letter… dated 18.07.2025 of this office,' read a July 22 order from District Magistrate. The police spokesperson on Saturday also asked citizens not to spread misinformation regarding alleged torture and violence on the part of the police during the operation. 'There is a lot of wrong information being shared online. So far, we have not received any such complaint; posts alleging torture are not genuine.' On the background of the 10 men found to be Bangladeshi, he said it is a part of the investigation, and further information cannot be shared at this stage.
