Iran Plans To Abandon GPS & Replace
US-based and Western technology firms dominate such telecoms and mapping tech infrastructure, and the June 12-day conflict saw Iranian vessels in the Persian Gulf experience repeated disruptions of GPS signal – and it's believed the system was utilized by Israel and the US to track and target Iranian officials.
Iranian officials were already worried about reliance on GPS even before the war, but the conflict has only heightened existing concerns – enough to race for alternatives. After all, the Global Positioning System (GPS) was literally an invention of the US Department of Defense in the 1970s and is currently run under the Space Force.
'At times, disruptions are created on this [GPS] system by internal systems, and this very issue has pushed us toward alternative options like BeiDou,' Ehsan Chitsaz, deputy communications minister, told state media earlier this month.
He confirmed that the government is working on a plan switch transportation, agriculture and the internet from GPS to China's BeiDou, according to Al Jazeera .
The same report emphasizes that 'Since 2013, whistleblowers and media investigations have revealed how various Western technologies and schemes have enabled illicit surveillance and data gathering on a global scale – something that has worried governments around the world.'
It's also only a natural trajectory that Iran would become increasingly more trusting of tech based out of China, India, or Russia – as opposed to that of the United States and Israel's close Western allies.
Russia, for its part, hopes its national or regional satellite navigation system GLONASS can spread, especially among allied populations.
As for BeiDou, it's seen as going hand and hand as a major tech tool with President Xi's ambitious Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) which has been making inroads across Asia and Africa.
Al Jazeera aptly concludes in its report that 'Iran's possible shift to BeiDou sends a clear message to other nations grappling with the delicate balance between technological convenience and strategic self-defence: The era of blind, naive dependence on US-controlled infrastructure is rapidly coming to an end.'
'Nations can no longer afford to have their military capabilities and vital digital sovereignty tied to the satellite grid of a superpower they cannot trust,' the report adds.
Indeed the Edward Snowden NSA leaks of many years ago also confirmed that this trend has been a problem for decades, and more recently Israeli companies have also made huge leaps in developing hidden spyware embedded in what's presented as civilian products and software.

UN to boost air parcel security a year after DHL depot explosions
AFP | Montreal The United Nations yesterday announced plans to enhance air mail security, one year after parcels exploded at DHL depots in Germany and Britain, in a plot blamed on Russia. The strategy announced by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Universal Postal Union -- two specialized UN agencies -- aims to improve threat detection, officials told AFP. European intelligence services believe Russia was behind the explosions last July at DHL depots in Leipzig, Germany and Birmingham in Britain. Several people implicated in the operation were believed to be 'disposable' agents with no official position in the Russian intelligence services, according to German media reports. Such low-level agents were typically recruited via messaging apps to carry out tasks for money, the reports said. German intelligence officials have said the planes carrying the parcels would have crashed had they exploded mid-flight. Canada-based ICAO's head of aviation security, Sonia Hifdi, did not directly name Russia when laying out the plan, but said: 'In the last 12 months, we have seen more sophisticated actors aiming to cause disruptions in the supply chain.' The joint 'multi-year action plan' strives to train all personnel who handle air mail, and will work towards increased data sharing between postal and aviation authorities.

Bolsonaro Placed Under House Arrest
Late Monday there's been more escalation in the Trump-Brazil standoff over the legal fate of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The country's top justices have ordered him to be put under house arrest. The Supreme Court, which is still in the process of ruling on the Bolsonaro case – as he's accused of an alleged coup attempt against his leftist rival President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – has now said he has defied a court order banning Bolsonaro from social media. They say he's attacking the nation's institutions while still on trial, and after he's already wearing a ankle monitoring has faced US sanctions (targeting among others Bolsonaro's main rival and man driving what Trump has called a 'witch hunt' – Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes) as well as the highest tariff rates in the world. Moraes himself issued the house arrest order, despite now being specifically targeted by the Trump administration. 'Moraes said Bolsonaro had violated precautionary measures imposed by the court restricting the former president's social media usage and political messaging,' according to Al Jazeera. Moraes has said that Bolsonaro, who was president of the country between 2019 and 2022, has spread messages with 'a clear content of encouragement and instigation to attacks against the Supreme Court and a blatant support for foreign intervention in the Brazilian Judiciary.' Trump's recent heightened intervention has added fuel to the fire, and the standoff has intensified, with the Lula government so far having refused to bend the knee. Bolsonaro's family members have also been very vocal, often acting as 'messenger' – for example hailing Trump's punitive actions targeting the Supreme Court and Lula officials.
