‘Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari' gears up for theatres, in 3D, joining the trend of Telugu film re-releases
When the film was released on May 9, 1990, a severe cyclone battered undivided Andhra Pradesh. The film drew the audiences gradually and became a blockbuster. It was a game changer for Ashwini Dutt and the production house. The fantasy drama directed by K Raghavendra Rao, with its story by Yandamoori Veerandranath and screenplay by Jandhyala, featured Chiranjeevi as a guardian of four children and Sridevi as the daughter of Lord Indra; she is in quest of her lost ring, without which she cannot return to Indralok.
Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari is the latest film to join the re-release bandwagon. The trend of re-releasing older hits gathered momentum post pandemic, hoping to woo back the audiences to the idea of collective theatrical viewing with a dash of nostalgia.
Once more, on the large screen
Mahesh Babu's Pokiri directed by Puri Jagannadh, SS Rajamouli's Simhadri featuring NTR Jr, Pawan Kalyan's Kushi, the Ravi Teja starrer Venky are a few examples. Several films followed, including director Sukumar and Allu Arjun's Arya 2, Gowtam Tinnanuri's sports drama Jersey led by Nani, Nag Ashwin's Yevade Subramanyam starring Nani and Vijay Deverakonda, Tharun Bhascker's Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi and Sekhar Kammula's Happy Days.
For the film teams, it was a chance to regroup and relive memories of making these hits. For the audiences, it was an opportunity to revisit old favourites and even introduce these films to the next generation on a large screen. When Nagarjuna and Sonali Bendre's 2002 hit Manmadhudu re-released, the cheer in the halls was palpable as Brahmanandam's famous line 'they paid no?' was said in unison.
Making these re-releases possible are technical teams that diligently restore and digitise old films. More often than not, old negatives are lost or damaged. Cases in point being Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari and Singeetam Srinivasa Rao's Aditya 369, the time travel film led by Balakrishna.
Since 2018, Swapna and her sister Priyanka Dutt were on the hunt to find a good print of Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari. Priyanka's husband, director Nag Ashwin, set a daily reminder on her phone, so that she would relentlessly pursue the search. The production house contacted several theatres in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to see if anyone had an old print of reasonable quality. Some theatres stored prints of old blockbusters as keepsakes. In 2021, a print was sourced from Appa Rao of Vijayawada.
Film restoration
Prasad Laboratories began to work on restoring the film. The reels that had been run on projectors for prolonged periods were weathered with the use of grease and oil. The cleaning process involved removing dust and grease from each frame, followed by scanning for digitisation. The restored film was first digitised in 8K and the images were then converted to 4K format for theatrical projection. Prime Focus oversaw the 3D conversion. 'This was challenging since the film was not shot for 3D,' says Swapna.
Ticket bookings for the re-release have been enthusiastic. Those who grew up in the '80s and '90s are likely to turn up in theatres for a slice of nostalgia. Swapna hopes the younger generation will also warm up to the film. 'I am looking forward to introducing the film to my five-year-old daughter. Old films may be available on television or digital platforms for home viewing, but the collective viewing experience is unmatchable.' Vyjayanthi Movies earlier re-released the Chiranjeevi and Sonali Bendre starrer Indra to much fan appeal.
Director Singeetam Srinivasa Rao's 1991 film Aditya 369 featured Balakrishna in dual roles, including Vijayanagara emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya. Producer Sivalenka Krishna Prasad says about its restoration, 'It was an iconic film for our production house, Sridevi Movies, and for Telugu cinema. All the effort that went into digitising the film in 4K with 5.1 sound mix was worth it when we saw the enthusiasm in theatres. We sourced a print (positive) from Vijayawada and worked on the restoration.'
The restored version of Aditya 369 was screened in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, USA, Australia and UK. Krishna Prasad saw it as an opportunity to showcase the film, presented by SP Balasubrahmanyam with dialogues by Jandhyala, to a newer generation. 'I doubt if young people will watch these older films at home,' he says, adding, 'When I lived in Chennai for a few years, I noticed how there was a culture of older films being screened in a few theatres. That helped people rediscover iconic films. Since we do not have that in the Telugu States, this trend of re-releases can serve to plug the gap.'
Next up is Rajamouli and NTR Jr's Yama Donga, expected to arrive on May 18. And, the trend is unlikely to fade any time soon. On X, producer Shobu Yarlagadda hinted at the possibility of re-releasing the Baahubali films to mark a decade of Baahubali - The Beginning!

Hari Hara Veera Mallu Box Office Collections: Pawan Kalyan starrer declared dead on Friday, moved a finger on Sunday
Hari Hara Veera Mallu pulled off a mild surprise over the weekend, as the film managed to pick up some collections in Andhra Pradesh. The Pawan Kalyan starrer grossed approximately Rs. 83.50 crore in India over its four-day opening weekend. Overseas, the film added another USD 1.60 million (Rs. 13.50 crore), pushing its worldwide total to Rs. 97 crore. After crashing nearly 80 per cent on Friday, the expectation was for Hari Hara Veera Mallu to continue free-falling. However, the film showed signs of stability on Saturday and then pulled off a surprising 60 per cent growth on Sunday in Andhra Pradesh. Even Telangana and Karnataka contributed decently, when they too could have completely collapsed. Of course, the weekend pickings don't change anything; the film was left for dead on Friday, but it managed to claw back some ground. It will now go over Rs. 100 crore worldwide in a day or two, which seemed far-fetched two days ago. The Day Wise Box Office Collections of Hari Hara Veera Mallu in India are as follows: Hari Hara Veera Mallu is yet another box office turkey delivered by Pawan Kalyan, who is arguably the biggest star in the Telugu states but hasn't delivered a box office winner in more than a decade. There was a Bheemla Nayak, which did decently well, but was unlucky to release in the circumstances it did and ended up from being a success. The film is also a setback for the Telugu film industry, which is having a horrific year at the box office, except for a couple of weeks of Sankranti Vashthunam during the holiday period. The last year was also a bad one in general, but there were four major hits spread across the year. This year has offered nothing. The Territorial Breakdown for Hari Hara Veera Mallu is as follows:

Ashwin Kumar's Mahavatar Narsimha mints Rs 15.85 Cr in opening weekend: collections soared by over 400 % from Day 1
Ashwin Kumar's mythological action drama, Mahavatar Narsimha, has exceeded expectations after a modest opening. The film, rooted in Indian mythology, witnessed significant growth over the weekend, particularly in the Hindi-speaking region. Strong word-of-mouth and appreciation for its spiritual themes are driving its success, potentially making it a surprise hit despite limited pre-release buzz. Ashwin Kumar 's mythological action drama Mahavatar Narsimha opened in cinemas with measured expectations, but the film has shown a notable upward trend through its opening weekend. Rooted in ancient Indian mythology and centered around the fierce avatar of Vishnu who emerges to destroy the tyrant Hiranyakashyap, the film has managed to strike a chord, particularly in the Hindi-speaking belt. Directed by Ashwin Kumar with reverence for the source material and supported by strong visuals, Mahavatar Narsimha delves into the eternal battle between good and evil, a story familiar to many but rarely attempted with such scale and cinematic vision in modern Indian cinema. The screenplay by Ashwin Kumar , Jayapurna Das and Rudra Pratap Ghosh brings to life the poignant journey of Prahlad's unwavering devotion and the divine wrath of Narsimha, offering both emotional and action-packed beats. The film had a modest start with a Day 1 (Friday) net collection of Rs 1.75 crore across all languages. Of this, the Hindi version contributed a significant Rs 1.3 crore, clearly establishing the northern belt as the film's strongest market. The Telugu version followed with Rs 35 lakhs, while Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam versions opened to limited numbers, together contributing just Rs 10 lakhs. However, the real turnaround began on Saturday, with the film showing an impressive 162.86% growth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo It collected Rs 4.6 crore, with the Hindi version rising to Rs 3.25 crore and Telugu to Rs 1.15 crore. The Kannada version improved marginally to Rs 11 lakhs, and the Tamil and Malayalam versions also saw slight upticks. The upward trajectory continued into Sunday, with the film raking in an estimated Rs 9.5 crore, marking another 106.52% increase from Saturday. Hindi alone contributed Rs 6.75 crore, while the Telugu version brought in Rs 2.4 crore. The film's total three-day India net collection now stands at Rs 15.85 crore, a solid figure for a mythological film led by a relatively lesser-known film not only showed a massive 442.86 % jump from its day 1 collection but also survived the Saiyaara wave in Hindi belt which has now become the 25th biggest hit of Hindi cinema. Never before has a film with newcomers like Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda performed this well at the box office. The film has been directed by Mohit Suri . What's becoming increasingly clear is that Mahavatar Narsimha is riding on strong word-of-mouth, especially among family audiences and devotees appreciative of its spiritual and moral themes. Its performance is particularly promising given that the film had limited buzz pre-release and a relatively niche theme in a market dominated by commercial action this momentum continues into the weekdays, the film may become a surprise hit.
