RBI gives 'further' 6-month extension to Yes Bank MD & CEO Prashant Kumar

Yes Bank has told the exchanges that Prashant Kumar, the lender's managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO), has got a six-month extension from the Reserve Bank of India effective October 6. The private-sector bank did not say how many years' extension it had sought from the regulator. '…we would like to inform that RBI, vide its letter dated June 12, 2025, has approved the extension of the tenure of appointment of Prashant Kumar as MD & CEO for a further period of six months, with effect from October 6, 2025, or till the appointment of new MD and CEO/successor taking charge, whichever is earlier,' it said in the exchange notification. Kumar was first appointed the administrator when Yes Bank was reconstructed by the RBI and the government with the help of a consortium of banks, including State Bank of India. He was later appointed MD & CEO. Kumar has worked as deputy MD and chief financial officer of SBI. Kumar received his first extension as Yes Bank's leader in October 2022 for a three-year period till October 2025. Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp is acquiring a 20 per cent stake in Yes Bank from SBI and other lenders involved in the lender's reconstruction for over Rs 13,000 crore. Reports had said that amid the deal, Yes Bank's board is considering the appointment of a new MD & CEO and has engaged a headhunting agency to assist in the search. Yes Bank is the second private-sector lender searching for a new chief executive. IndusInd Bank is in the process of appointing a new MD & CEO following the exit of Sumant Kathpalia. Yes Bank was down 0.26 per cent at the BSE a little before 12.30 pm from the previous day's close at Rs 20.16.

Inflation hits 75-month low of 2.8% in May as food prices cool

India's retail inflation dropped to a 75-month low of 2.8% year-on-year in May, driven by a steep fall in food prices, data released on Thursday showed. Economists expect it to ease further in June. The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation stood at 3.2% in April and 4.8% in May last year. Food inflation, accounting for a significant weight in the inflation basket, fell to a 43-month low of 0.99% in May. The lower inflation is unlikely to trigger another interest rate cut, but is expected to boost consumer demand for goods and services, experts said. "As of now, we expect rates to be unchanged in the August policy review," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA . Last week, the Reserve Bank of India 's monetary policy committee (MPC) delivered a larger-than-expected rate cut of 50 basis points, reducing the policy rate to 5.5%. Additionally, the cash reserve ratio (CRR) is being lowered by 100 basis points to 3% in tranches, which is expected to infuse Rs 2.5 lakh crore into the banking system in the coming months. The MPC also shifted its policy stance to neutral from accommodative, indicating a pause in rate action. "Overall, the change in the policy stance appears to be a strong signal of a pause, especially when combined with the unexpected CRR cut," Nayar said. However, she noted the possibility of a final 25 bps rate cut in October, contingent on monsoon performance and its impact on food inflation. Paras Jasrai, associate director at India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra), said, "We expect a 25-bps cut this fiscal, unless there are surprises from global development or growth declines sharply." The central bank has revised its inflation forecast for FY26 downward to 3.7% from 4% estimated in April. Average inflation was 4.6% in FY25. Inflation in rural areas declined to 2.6% last month from 2.9% in April, while urban inflation fell to 3.1% from 3.4%. "This (fall in inflation) would further amplify the pick-up in the rural demand, which is showing signs of recovery with a sustained positive real rural wage growth," Jasrai said. He added that declining inflation is expected to provide a significant boost to the real wages of the households in FY26. Out of 22 major states and union territories, 10 reported higher inflation than the national average in May. Kerala topped the list at 6.5%, followed by Punjab (5.2%), Jammu and Kashmir (4.6%), Haryana (3.7%), and Uttarakhand (3.5%). Food, services Vegetable prices saw a steep 13.7% year-on-year drop in May, while pulses inflation fell 8.2%. "Higher production of pulses in both kharif and rabi crops helped temper prices," said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda . Prices of tomatoes, potatoes, and onions declined significantly by 26.2%, 20.3%, and 10.7%, respectively, in May. However, Sabnavis cautioned that the early onset of rain may affect tomato and onion crops, possibly leading to higher prices and moderate inflation in June. Cereal inflation eased to a 39-month low of 4.8% on better production. Among food items, oils and fats registered the highest inflation at 17.9%, followed by fruits at 12.7%. In the services category, personal care inflation rose to 13.5% year-on-year in May from 12.9% in April. The miscellaneous group (including education, health, transport, services and others) recorded an inflation of 5.1%. The main contributor was gold, with an inflation of 32.2%. Outlook "The disinflationary trend in various food items is expected to continue even in June," Jasrai said. Both Ind-Ra and ICRA expect inflation to ease further to 2.5% in June. The RBI forecasts inflation of 2.9% for the first quarter of FY26. "This looks likely to be achieved as inflation will remain range bound in June too," Sabnavis noted.

Rupee Falls 66 Paise Amid Costlier Crude, Israel-Iran Tensions; Check Details

Last Updated: The Indian rupee fell 66 paise to 86.18 per US dollar due to costlier crude and Israel-Iran tensions. Brent crude futures rose 12.45 percent, and Indian equities also declined. The Indian rupee on Friday declined 66 paise to trade at 86.18 to a US dollar amid costlier crude and Israel-Iran tensions. It had closed at 85.52 in the previous session on Thursday. After the opening, the rupee recovered a bit to trade at 85.52. At the interbank forex, the rupee opened at 86.25 and moved between an intraday high of 86.25 and a low of 85.98 against the US dollar. Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director of Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said, 'The Indian rupee was expected to open down as hostility in the Middle East kept tensions boiling. The range for the rupee is expected between 85.70 to 86.25, but it could be an opportunity for exporters to sell their receivables as the RBI will surely step in to curb the volatility. Importers need to wait and watch the situation as it develops." Brent crude futures rose $8.64, or 12.45%, to $78.00 a barrel by 0825 IST, the highest in the past five months. US equity futures plunged 1.8% and safe-haven demand boosted the struggling dollar. 'The real concern for the rupee isn't just today's oil spike – it's the risk of a sustained rally if Middle East tensions deepen," a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank told Reuters. According to the trader, the 86.00 to 86.10 zone is a major support for the rupee, though he warned that defending it 'will be challenging". Israel said early on Friday that it struck Iran, and Iranian media said explosions were heard in Tehran as tensions mounted over US efforts to win Iran's agreement to halt production of material for an atomic bomb. Indian equities markets on Friday also took a hit of global tensions. The BSE Sensex tanked 1,337.39 points to 80,354.59 in early trade, while the Nifty dropped 415.2 points to 24,473. Safe-haven demand lifted the Japanese yen and the Swiss franc and helped the dollar index recover to the 98 handle. The 10-year US yield dropped despite the jump in oil.
