French police launch probe after Israeli rabbi threatens Macron

News183 days ago
Paris [France], August 9 (ANI): The Paris prosecutor's office on Friday opened an investigation following threatening remarks directed at French President Emmanuel Macron by Israeli rabbi David Daniel Cohen in an online video, France 24 reported. The rabbi's remarks were reportedly motivated by the French government's decision to formally recognise a Palestinian state, slated for September.Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the statements on X, calling them 'totally unacceptable remarks" and noting that Cohen 'made several abhorrent threats, notably against the President of the Republic," according to France 24.Retailleau said he contacted the French government's online Pharos platform, which monitors dangerous and criminal content, and 'also reported these remarks to the justice system under Article 40 of the criminal procedure code," France 24 reported. In the YouTube video, Cohen warned, 'This French president, he needs to know – he better prepare his coffin. God will show him what it means to want to be so brazen and to want to make statements against God," as cited by France 24.The rabbi accused Macron of expressing 'profound anti-Semitism" and 'declaring war on God" by recognising a Palestinian state.Strongly condemning 'the abhorrent and intolerable remarks by Daniel David Cohen," France's Chief Rabbi Haim Korsia clarified on X that Cohen 'has never held any rabbinical position in France, was not trained by nor graduated from France's rabbinical school," France 24 reported. This controversy comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria, as French President Emmanuel Macron has directed his government to tighten visa requirements for Algerian diplomats in response to disputes over the deportation of Algerian nationals, France 24 reported. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Francois Bayrou, Macron said that France is facing 'growing difficulties" with Algeria in terms of migration and security, necessitating a firmer stance against the former French colony. France 24 reported that Macron's directive comes amid deepening friction between Paris and Algiers.Macron asked Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot to formally notify Algeria of the suspension of a 2013 bilateral agreement, which exempted diplomatic and official passport holders from visa obligations. The move marks a significant step in revisiting long-standing diplomatic protocols between the two countries.According to France 24, Macron also instructed Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau to coordinate with Schengen zone countries to help enforce the revised visa policy. Specifically, France has requested these countries to consult Paris before issuing short-stay visas to Algerian officials and those using passports covered under the 2013 agreement.'France must be strong and command respect. It can only receive this from its partners if it shows them the respect it demands from them. This basic rule also applies to Algeria," Macron said, as quoted in the letter.Tensions between the two nations have intensified since France recognised Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in July 2024, a decision that strained ties with Algeria, France 24 noted.Relations further deteriorated after Algerian authorities arrested Franco-Algerian author Boualem Sansal in November, and reached a tipping point in February when an Algerian national — whom France had tried unsuccessfully to deport — was arrested as the suspect in a deadly knife attack in Mulhouse. One person was killed and three others injured in the incident.France 24 highlighted that Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has been vocal about the need to overhaul France's visa and migration arrangements with Algeria. Retailleau has cited Algeria's persistent refusal to accept the return of its nationals ordered to leave France under the 'OQTF" (obligation to leave French territory) deportation regime as a key issue. The decision signals a tougher diplomatic line from France as it seeks to address long-standing concerns over repatriation, security cooperation, and reciprocal diplomatic conduct with Algeria. Israel Defence Minister clashes with IDF Chief over senior military appointments

Tel Aviv, Aug 12 (UNI) Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had a public dispute with Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir late yesterday over senior appointments in the military, as per Times of Israel. A media leak prior to the announcement of the appointments led to Katz' row with Zamir, with the Defence Minister slamming the military chief in a public statement. Katz said the meeting held by Zamir was conducted 'contrary to the defence minister's directive and without prior coordination and agreement, in violation of established procedure.' Katz added he had 'no intention of discussing or approving any of the appointments or names' that were leaked. 'The Chief of Staff will be required to coordinate in advance with the defence minister in order to discuss these or other appointments in the future,' he said. Noting that the Defence Ministry was superior to the military in authority, and that the IDF was subordinate to its policies, Zamir hit back at the office after announcing the appointments. Releasing a statement from the IDF, Zamir said that 'staffing discussion was scheduled in advance, in accordance with regulations.' 'The chief of staff is the sole authority under regulations for appointing commanders at the rank of colonel and above in the IDF. The chief of staff holds an orderly staffing discussion with the participation of the General Staff forum,' the military said in the statement. 'The chief of staff decides on the appointments, after which the appointment goes to the (defence) minister for approval, who may approve or not approve the appointment,' the IDF added. The spat between the two carried over on Tuesday, with Katz releasing another statement, insisting that he would follow the accepted procedures. 'Since these are joint appointments by the Defence Minister and the IDF chief of staff, there is an accepted procedure for appointments of ranks colonel and up in the IDF,' Katz said. 'No discussion of IDF shakeups is held before the accepted procedure is carried out.' Katz said he has 'clarified to the chief of staff that he needs more time and the discussion must not be held at this time,' adding that he will 'weigh whether to promote senior officers on the Gaza front who haven't served the accepted timeframe for their roles to other roles before the task of defeating Hamas in Gaza has been completed.' Katz also said he will examine whether to promote officers who served as commanders on the Gaza front during the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, or whose names were linked to 'irregular incidents in the past.' 'The military echelon is subordinate to the defence minister and will act in accordance with his orders and the policy he will set,' he stressed. UNI ANV SSP

Canada charts an Express Entry reset for 2026: A ‘leadership and innovation' category to be introduced

This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the immigration agency of the Canadian government, has issued a draft for public consultation focused on the future of the Express Entry system, which is a popular pathway to permanent residency, especially for Indians. As per the discussion draft, the Express Entry system would continue to focus on addressing long-term labour market shortages and bolstering Francophone immigration outside Quebec. The most significant proposal is the introduction of an entirely new stream – the 'Leadership and Innovation' category, which would give preference to senior managers, researchers, and scientists with the potential to drive Canada's competitiveness. Through the Express Entry system, Canada is also eyeing potential talent for its armed forces by facilitating the recruitment of highly skilled military personnel from allied countries. Such a move, IRCC's discussion paper states, would help maintain a 'robust, world-class' defence force. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The state of AI infrastructure: 2025 research report CIO | Google Cloud, AMD Undo Express Entry is Canada's point-based mechanism used to manage immigration applications for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. Based on various parameters such as age, education, French language proficiency etc, candidates are given a Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS). Post this, they are placed in the Express Entry pool and ranked relative to each other. Periodical draws (the emphasis is now on category-based draws) are held and those attaining the cut-off CRS score get an invitation to apply for permanent residency. According to Talha Mohani, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant and managing partner at Migration Bureau Canada, the policies should also focus on job creation. 'The 'Leadership and Innovation' category must explicitly include proven entrepreneurs and investor founders. The Express Entry's category mechanism should ideally invite higher-impact business immigrants (senior managers, founders with traction, investor families) into dedicated draws. In parallel, there is a need to introduce a 'temporary business resident pathway' granting temporary status with healthcare and education access to dependents while the entrepreneur meets measurable milestones (based on job creation and/or investments) to achieve permanent residence,' he told TOI. Labour shortages remain a priority: The discussion draft acknowledges Canada's ongoing struggle to fill skilled positions in healthcare, the skilled trades (particularly construction roles critical to boosting housing supply), education, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and agriculture. It adds that tackling these shortages is vital. Through the consultation process, IRCC is seeking input on whether Express Entry should focus more on transitioning skilled temporary residents already in Canada to permanent status, or on recruiting from overseas, especially in sectors such as healthcare and skilled trades. According to Ken Nickel-Lane, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant and founder of an immigration services firm, 'The focus on those already in Canada already continues to make good sense, given issues around housing and healthcare. Category-based selection draws are still fundamentally a good approach to addressing near-term needs for specific skills shortages across the country, but the categories should be reviewed more frequently.' In March 2025, Canada removed the additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points awarded for job offers under the Express Entry system. Prior to this change, job offers could grant candidates either 50 or 200 extra points Nickel-Lane states that'Prioritising the selection of senior managers should not merely translate to creating another category for Express Entry draws for those outside Canada. Rather, points for job offers should be resumed for those already in the country on work permits under the International Mobility Program - these are the people companies need here long term to build on their growth plans.' Francophone immigration targets: The discussion draft reaffirms Canada's commitment to boosting Francophone immigration outside Quebec, which the government sees as a driver of both cultural diversity and economic strength. Manish Kapoor, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant, points out that since the introduction of category-based draws in 2023, the Francophone stream has grown at the fastest pace, recording the highest numbers within category-based selection and accounting for a substantial portion of immigration targets. 'While I do not oppose this focus, I suggest reinstating transport occupations in the category-based draws, as its contributions to the national economy are significant. I believe IRCC should consider adjusting next year's targets to conduct STEM, transport, and trades draws,' he told TOI. The road ahead: IRCC is calling for public feedback on these proposals through September, with final decisions expected in late fall 2025, parallel to the unveiling of the 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan. The immigration levels plan at present has set the targets at 3.95 lakh permanent residents in 2025; 3.80 lakh for 2026; and aims to have a further reduced target of 3.65 lakh in 2027. It also supports efforts to reduce temporary resident volumes to 5% of Canada's population by the end of 2026. The number of temporary residents in Canada has grown exponentially over the last few years, from about 437,000 individuals in 2019 alone to about 1.2 million (12 lakhs) in 2023.
