Known for her calm demeanor on the court as a player, Cha Cuñada now brings that same steady presence to the Colegio de San Juan de Letran women's volleyball coaching staff in the NCAA.
The 25-year-old former outside spiker admitted she was never the vocal leader back in her playing years and hat's exactly what she is using now in guiding the next generation of the Lady Knights.
As a silent operator, Cuñada made sure her game did the talking.
The 5-foot-5 hitter suited up for both the indoor and beach volleyball teams for Letran from Season 94 to Season 98, a stretch that saw her leading the Lady Knights to a beach volleyball crown in Season 98 and bagging the MVP plum in the process.
She has now transitioned to coaching, helping Letran head coach Oliver Almadro full-time since Season 99 as they look to lead the rebirth of the Lady Knights.
Cuñada admitted that transitioning from player to coach wasn't easy, especially since many of the players on the current roster were once her teammates, making it tricky to strike the right balance in her new role.
"At first, mahirap kasi maraming players dito 'yung naabutan pa akong maglaro, sina Lara, si Nathalie [Estreller], si Juday [Nitura]. So parang ang hirap, hindi ko alam kung paano 'yung magiging approach ko sa kanila," Cuñada, who previously had stints with Chery Tiggo and Cignal, added.
"Pero na-realize ko na hindi naman lahat kailangan idaan sa taas ng boses, nakikinig naman sila kahit 'pag kinakausap ko lang nang maayos."

Kevin Quiambao the 'highlight' for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup opener vs Chinese Taipei

Kevin Quiambao's performance did not go unnoticed even if he played in a losing effort. The young Gilas Pilipinas forward injected life into his team's second-half comeback attempt against Chinese Taipei in their 2025 FIBA Asia Cup opener early Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Though he sat out the entire first half, KQ finished with 17 points in the second half while also grabbing four rebounds and two assists in just 16 minutes of action. The former UAAP MVP also made key plays, igniting a personal 5-0 run early in the fourth quarter and burying a step-back three that brought Gilas back to within six, 80-74, with 4:43 remaining in the game. But his efforts were not enough as the Philippines came up short, 95-87, in their first assignment in this year's Asia Cup. READ MORE | Gilas Pilipinas stumbles vs Chinese Taipei in 2025 FIBA Asia Cup opener Despite the loss, Gilas head coach Tim Cone tipped his hat to Quiambao for providing life when the team needed it most. "Well, he came out and played with a lot of energy, hit some big shots for us but we still came up short," Cone said. Justin Brownlee carried the offense for Gilas in the first half, collecting 16 points over the first two quarters that was highlighted by a buzzer-beater triple from beyond the halfcourt mark that trimmed Gilas' deficit to 11, 27-16, to end the first period. But the naturalized forward was forced into limited minutes in the fourth quarter due to foul trouble, setting the stage for the former De La Salle star's takeover. With Brownlee fouling out of the game at the 4:31 mark, Chinese Taipei's Robert Hinton sank a pair of freebies to bring Chinese Taipei to another double-digit lead, 88-78, before KQ answered with another long bomb and a jumper to cut the gap to seven with 1:01 to go, 90-83. But his and the rest of Gilas' efforts went for naught as Chinese Taipei closed out what had been a dominant game behind veteran sharpshooter Ying-Chun Chen, who fired 34 points on 6-of-8 shooting from downtown. "We were playing from our heels so we were trying to rush back into the game and took a lot of ill-advised shots, made a lot if ill-advised fouls," Cone added. "But in terms of the way Kevin played, Kevin played very very well. He was the highlight of the team." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

KarlTzy accepts 'GOAT' status after steering Team Liquid to MSC glory

Karl 'KarlTzy' Nepomuceno has completed his decorated championship resume with the elusive MSC crown — the one title that had long evaded him. With it, the star jungler has finally embraced the GOAT label after years of sidestepping the conversation and letting his play do the talking as he finally captured the MSC title with Team Liquid Philippines. Team Liquid bucked a Game 1 hiccup en route to a decisive 4-1 victory over defending champion of Malaysia in the grand finals last Saturday. "Yes. If I have a lot of people backing me up, saying that I'm the GOAT, I'll agree with them right now," KarlTzy said. "I'm just really happy and really proud of myself that I became the GOAT." It has been a long journey for KarlTzy. He made his MPL debut way back in Season 2 in 2019 under the banner of Finesse Solid and was later selected to be part of the Philippines' gold medal team in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang debut in the Southeast Asian Games here in Manila. He was later acquired by Bren Esports, where he helped the team capture the MPL Philippines Season 6 title—a victory that marked the beginning of his meteoric rise. KarlTzy played a crucial role in Bren's historic title run in the M2 World Championship in 2021, claiming the MVP honors as the Philippines seized its first world title. Later that year, KarlTzy found his way to Echo Philippines where he initially teamed up with the likes of powerhouse names Tristan 'Yawi' Cabrera, Frediemar '3MarTzy' Serafico, and Ashley Marco "Killuash" Cruz. Under Team Liquid (formerly Echo) KarlTzy captured three more MPL titles in Season 11, 13, and 15, all while also winning the M4 World Championship crown in early 2023 after they swept Blacklist International in their all-Filipino finals showdown. MSC was the one trophy that always got away. KarlTzy and Echo came close to it in the 2023 edition in Cambodia, but the Philippine bets fell to eventual champion Onic Esports of Indonesia during their semifinals bout. Then again in 2024, Team Liquid fell short anew after absorbing a 1-3 loss to compatriot AP. Bren in the semifinals. This year, they shattered the curse with a flawless title run, putting an end to the Philippines' two-year MSC dry spell. "Hindi naging madali 'yung run namin dito sa EWC. Nagumpisa kami sa MPL na kumapa kami sa isa't isa. Sobrang dami rin namin naging ups and downs and mga na-ecnounter na problema," Team Liquid head coach Rodel "Ar Sy" Cruz said. "Pero mas pinili namin labanan 'yun nang magkakasama kami until makuha namin 'yung MPL and now, MSC. Sa lahat ng nangyari sa amin, masasabi ko lang na sobrang proud ako sa sarili ko at sa mga naging players ko." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Mapua University shared its pride in representing the Philippines in the global stage. The Cardinals finished 14th overall in the World University Games held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany last July 16 to 27. "The Mapúa Cardinals is incredibly proud to have represented the Philippines in the recent FISU World University Games 2025 last July 16-27, 2025 in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. With over 8,000 student-athletes from over 100 countries representing various sports, our very own basketball team successfully bagged a win over Chile in a sweet 77-69 victory," the University said in its post. "This participation, which was also recognized by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), also serves as a strategic move for the team to foster camaraderie as they march into the upcoming NCAA Season 101." In the tournament, the Cardinals ended the group phase winless against Brazil, Czech Republic, and Poland. The NCAA defending champions also fell short against Lebanon, 73-67, in the quarterfinals. In the classification round, however, the Intramuros-based squad defeated Chile, 77-69, before falling to Argentina, 84-71. Brazil won the gold medal in the said event, while the United States and Lithuania completed the podium. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
