ASEAN must stay united to fight US tariffs: Malaysia

Yahoo25-05-2025
Southeast Asian nations must accelerate regional economic integration, diversify their markets and stay united to tackle the fallout from global trade disruptions resulting from sweeping US tariff hikes.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan's call for a united front came in his opening speech at a meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
He also reiterated the bloc's call to warring parties in Myanmar to end hostilities in a deadly civil war that has killed thousands and displaced millions of people since a 2021 government takeover by the military.
"ASEAN nations are among those most heavily affected by the US-imposed tariffs," he said.
The US–China trade war is dramatically disrupting production and trade patterns worldwide.
"A global economic slowdown is likely to happen," Mohamad said.
"We must seize this moment to deepen regional economic integration, so that we can better shield our region from external shocks."
ASEAN countries, many of which rely on exports to the US, are reeling from tariffs imposed by the Trump administration ranging from 10 per cent to 49 per cent.
Six of the association's 10 member nations were among the worst-hit with tariffs ranging from 32 per cent to 49 per cent.
ASEAN unsuccessfully sought an initial meeting with the US as a bloc. When US President Donald Trump last month announced a 90-day pause on the tariffs, countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam swiftly began trade negotiations with Washington.
The meeting of foreign ministers preceded a planned ASEAN leaders' summit Monday in Malaysia, the bloc's current chair.
A summit is expected to follow on Tuesday with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and leaders from the Gulf Co-operation Council comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
ASEAN's unity is crucial as the region grapples with impacts of climate change and disruption from the malevolent use of artificial intelligence and other unregulated technologies, Mohamad said, adding that ASEAN's centrality will be tested by external pressure, including a superpower rivalry.
"External pressures are rising, and the scope of challenges has never had higher stakes," he said.
"It is therefore crucial that we reinforce the ties that bind us, so as to not unravel under external pressures. For ASEAN, unity is now more important than ever."
ASEAN remained committed to help war-torn Myanmar, which is recovering from a March earthquake that killed more than 3700 people, Mohamad said.
Myanmar's military leaders were barred from attending ASEAN meetings after refusing to comply with ASEAN's peace plan, which includes negotiations and delivery of humanitarian aid.

AM Best Revises Outlooks to Negative for Malayan Insurance Co., Inc.

SINGAPORE, August 21, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has revised the outlooks to negative from stable and affirmed the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of B++ (Good), Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of "bbb" (Good) and Philippines National Scale Rating (NSR) of aa+.PH (Superior) of Malayan Insurance Co., Inc. (Malayan) (Philippines). The Credit Rating (ratings) reflect Malayan's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management. In addition, the ratings factor in a neutral impact from the company's ultimate ownership by Pan Malayan Management and Investment Corp. The revised outlooks to negative from stable reflect continued pressure on Malayan's operating performance fundamentals, mainly due to underwriting performance volatility driven by catastrophe and large loss events in recent periods. The company recorded underwriting losses in three of the past five years, with a five-year average (2020-2024) combined ratio of 105.6%. In 2024, while total operating earnings remained profitable, the company reported an underwriting loss, driven by elevated catastrophe losses that negatively impacted the company's core commercial lines. Investment income continues to be the principal contributor to Malayan's overall earnings, supporting the company's track record of positive earnings. For the first half of 2025, the company recorded an underwriting loss largely driven by adverse loss reserve development on prior periods. Prospectively, AM Best expects underwriting profitability to improve, driven by the ongoing portfolio remediation measures undertaken by the company, however, this is subject to execution risk. Malayan's balance sheet strength assessment is underpinned by its risk-adjusted capitalisation, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), which is expected to remain at the strongest level over the medium term. Nonetheless, the company's risk-adjusted capitalisation is viewed to be sensitive to shock events, particularly arising from the occurrence of multiple severe catastrophe events in short succession. Offsetting factors include the company's high reliance on reinsurance to support the underwriting of large commercial risks and its exposure to counterparties that are non-rated on an international FSR scale. AM Best views Malayan's investment portfolio to have moderate risk, comprising mainly fixed-income securities and a moderate exposure to equity investments. The neutral business profile assessment reflects Malayan's position as one of the largest non-life insurance companies in the Philippines based on gross premium written in 2024. The company benefits from its affiliation with the Yuchengco Group of Companies, a large conglomerate in the Philippines, in terms of branding and distribution. Malayan continues to demonstrate a strong commitment toward digital transformation, which is an important pillar of the company's long-term strategy for retail business development. Meet The Man Who Broke 20 Guinness World Records With His $150 Million Whisky Collection

Nguyễn Đình Tuấn Việt, from Vietnam, holds 20 Guinness World Records for his $175 million rare spirits collection. Mark Littler LTD Mr. Nguyễn Đình Tuấn Việt has achieved what no collector before him has managed: recognition by Guinness World Records across 20 distinct categories. The record breaking achievements make him the most decorated individual in the history of rare spirits collecting. Mr Việt's collection isn't simply about accumulating expensive bottles. His collection represents three decades of methodical collecting that has preserved some of the rarest expressions ever produced. His collection includes five bottles of the record breaking Macallan 1926 60 year old, as well as the oldest bottles from the four major spirits: whisky, cognac, armagnac and rum. It is an impressive achievement, but just as importantly, the bottles preserve a story of distillation heritage that might otherwise have been lost forever. Among Việt's 20 records, two stand out as particularly remarkable achievements in the collectors' market: He holds the record for The World's Most Valuable Whisky Collection and The World's Most Valuable Cognac Collection. To the untrained eye these may look like just bottles of whisky, but pictured here are a complete Macallan Fine & Rare series, Red Collection and six Guinness World Record-holding bottles. Mark Littler LTD His whisky collection is valued at $150 million (£113 million), comprises over 1,200 bottles, and showcases legendary bottles from Scottish distillation's golden era of the 19th and early 20th centuries. As well as making up part of the record setting collection, the group also includes five bottles of the most expensive whisky in the world: Macallan 1926 60 Years Old, as well as two complete Macallan Fine & Rare vertical sets spanning from 1926 to 2000. For context, individual Macallan 1926 60 year old bottles have held the record for the most expensive bottle in the world multiple times, regularly breaking their own records. The most recent Valerio Adami edition sold for over $2.8 million at auction in 2023. But to have two complete Fine and Rare he must also have two of the Fine and Rare liveried 1926 bottles, which themselves command around $1.5 to $2 million each. Mr Việt's five bottles form this record setting series represent an unprecedented concentration of what many consider the holy grail of collectible whisky. His cognac collection is worth around $25 million (£20 million) and is made up of 700 bottles. It may seem modest in comparison to the whisky value, but this is equally important in terms of preservation. It features the oldest cognac in the world as well as other extremely rare cognacs from France's most prestigious houses. Many of these bottles haven't appeared at public auction in decades, if ever. A Living Spirits Museum While it is easy to be dazzled by the numbers, Việt's collections are not just about cost. Several of his bottles are believed to be the last surviving examples on Earth. Bottles that even some collectors didn't know still existed. He looks at each addition to his collection as a historical artifact rather than something that is purely value driven. Mr. Việt with his collection, including three Macallan Reach 81-Year-Olds (foreground), the Macallan Timespace 84-Year-Old (back right), and multiple complete sets of the world's oldest whisky, the Macallan 1926 60-Year-Old. Mark Littler LTD "When I hold the Jules Robin Cognac from 1696, I am not simply holding a bottle—I am touching the memory of a vanished century," Việt explains to me over an email to discuss his world records. Việt explained to me that 30 years ago his collecting journey may have begun as a hobby, but as his understanding of spirits grew, it evolved into a passion for preserving the past. "I may own these bottles, but I do not see them merely as assets. I consider myself entrusted with their care. Each bottle has lived for centuries—my duty is to let it continue living, intact and unchanged." Nguyễn Đình Tuấn Việt The Significance of 20 Guinness World Records Achieving 20 Guinness World Records in spirits collecting represents an unprecedented milestone. Previous record holders typically achieved recognition in one or two categories. Việt's comprehensive sweep across multiple spirits types, ages and rarities demonstrates both the breadth and depth of his interest and commitment. For Mr. Việt, collecting rare spirits is less about ownership and more about safeguarding history for future generations. Mark Littler LTD Arguably, in a time where many historic distilleries have closed and traditional production methods have evolved, Việt's bottles serve as liquid libraries of techniques and flavors from bygone eras. Gen-z are often quoted as turning away from alcohol—something I don't tend to agree with as I think it is an access and marketing issue, but that's for another article—but in the shadow of such a potential generational change in drinking habits, the preservation of spirit heritage becomes even more important. The vast collection also acts as a keystone for market authentication. This is an area that is increasingly important in the secondary whisky market, as counterfeits become ever-more sophisticated. Market Implications and Legacy For the broader whisky, cognac and rum markets, Việt's collections set new benchmarks for what constitutes world-class accumulation. His focus on complete vertical sets and historical significance offers a template for serious collectors. Even for those with varying budgets smaller verticals and series can offer interesting goals. As Việt himself notes: "Money can't buy time—but it can buy bottles that contain time." Many of the records held by Việt are not about money or value; they are about age, rarity or the story behind a bottle. Not all of us will reach the pinnacle of being the biggest or the best or the most expensive. That is fine. Whatever you're collecting, and whatever scale, let it tell its own story of you, and contribute in some way to the collective memory of heritage in distillation and craftsmanship.
