MCMC tracks down TikTok user who falsely claimed to be pathologist in Zara Qairina post-mortem

Malay Mail2 days ago
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 19 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified the individual behind the TikTok account 'Dato' Prof Dr Tunku Iskandar', who was found impersonating a pathologist and claiming to have been involved in the post-mortem of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that the suspect was not a pathologist, MCMC said in a statement today.
'The individual was traced near Kota Damansara late last night based on information from the statements of two people who had also joined the account's 'TikTok Live' session.
'The suspect was then taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to have his statement recorded, while his communication devices were also seized for further investigation and analysis,' the statement said.
MCMC said the dissemination of false information, particularly involving sensitive issues such as deaths, tragedies or accident victims, is a serious offence that can hurt the feelings of families, mislead the public and disrupt investigations by the authorities.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588). The investigation paper will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instruction.
If convicted, the offender may face a maximum fine of RM500,000 or up to two years' imprisonment, or both. In addition, police are also investigating the case under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code. — Bernama

Pendang MP denies challenging fellow MP to a fight

Pendang MP Awang Hashim said it was not correct to say he had challenged Jelutong MP RSN Rayer to a fight outside Parliament. PETALING JAYA : Pendang MP Awang Hashim has denied challenging another MP to a fight outside Parliament last week. Awang, who was suspended from the Dewan Rakyat for 10 days on Monday, said it was a 'reminder' to Jelutong MP RSN Rayer to watch out for attacks outside Parliament. 'It is not correct to say I invited him to fight. My hand motions were recorded but it did not show what I really meant. 'I know what it would mean to challenge someone to a fight outside Parliament. 'I only wanted to remind the MP not to touch on religious issues to the point that someone else would punch him outside Parliament,' Berita Harian reported him as saying. Last week, Marang MP Abdul Hadi Awang implied in his debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan that Kuala Lumpur's problems were due to DAP and the unity government. This led to a fiery exchange between MPs from both sides and a walkout by opposition MPs. Several videos that later went viral showed Awang making gestures, apparently challenging others to a fight outside the Dewan Rakyat. In his ruling on Monday, Speaker Johari Abdul said he witnessed the incident and was 'very disappointed'. 'The gallery was open, there were children from school,' he had said, adding that such behaviour did not look good for the nation. Awang said he would abide by the ruling, but regretted that he was not given the opportunity to explain himself over the video which had shown him making a fist. 'I was not called to defend myself. If the punishment has been given by the meeting's rule holders and they say I am guilty, I will accept it,' he said.

Appeals Court lowers 24-year jail term to 16 years for Perlis welder who sexually assaulted stepdaughter

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 21 — The Court of Appeal today reduced a welder's prison term from 24 years to 16 years for four counts of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter. A three-member bench led by Justice Datuk Azman Abdullah allowed the 57-year-old man's appeal, varying the sentence from six years to four years on each charge. The court ordered the sentences to run consecutively from the date of his arrest on March 21, 2022. Justices Datuk Mohamed Zaini Mazlan and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin sat with Justice Azman on the panel. In delivering the court's decision, Justice Azman said while the gravity of the offences was not in doubt, the Sessions Court's original sentence of 24 years would have a 'crushing effect.' He said the bench accepted the defence counsel's submission that the principle of totality must be applied. In April 2022, the Sessions Court sentenced the man to 24 years' imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to four counts of sexually assaulting his 11-year-old stepdaughter, who is now 15. The offences were committed at a house in Padang Besar, Perlis, on several occasions — July 2021, early and late December 2021, and March 5, 2022. Both the accused and the prosecution filed cross-appeals to the High Court challenging the sentence, but the High Court dismissed them in January last year. At today's hearing, defence counsel Mohamad Zaidan Daud urged the appellate court to consider his client's age, contending that a lengthy custodial term would have a 'crushing effect.' He further requested that the sentences run concurrently, which would have resulted in a six-year term. Zaidan also argued that under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, the maximum penalty is 20 years' imprisonment, and therefore the 24-year sentence imposed by the Sessions Court exceeded the statutory limit. Deputy public prosecutor Iznina Hanim Hashim opposed the request, stressing that the offences were distinct acts committed on different occasions and therefore warranted consecutive sentences. She urged the court to impose a stiffer punishment, describing his acts as repugnant. — Bernama

Viral arrow incident in Penang linked to equipment failure, says state sports council

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 21 — The Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) today clarified that the incident involving an arrow striking a car on Jalan Macalister on Aug 13 was due to a technical fault with an athlete's equipment. The council stated that investigations revealed the mishap occurred during a training session for the Sukma Games, with the Penang Archery Association, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Residensi. 'It was an unforeseen accident beyond control, despite World Archery-standard safety measures in place. MSNPP stressed that this was the first such incident since high-performance archery training began at the school field in 2009. All training sessions at the venue have been suspended pending further safety measures, while alternative sites are being considered for Sukma XVII preparations. MSNPP also pledged full cooperation with the police and urged the public not to speculate on the case. Police earlier confirmed receiving a report from the 57-year-old car owner, after a video of the arrow lodged in his vehicle went viral on social media. — Bernama
