PM urges business-friendly reforms following Malaysia's ranking rise
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts to enhance the ease of doing business in Malaysia, following the country's improved performance in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025, where it jumped 11 places to rank 23rd globally. Anwar described the result, the best in five years, as a clear sign of progress, but warned that sustained reforms remain necessary to maintain momentum. "I urge all relevant parties to continue strengthening their resolve and efforts to improve the ease of doing business in the country," he said in a Facebook post after chairing the National Physical Planning Council meeting. He also said that comprehensive reform in governance and public service delivery is important, highlighting the need for systems that are more efficient, transparent and uphold integrity. Anwar added that effective planning under the Town and Country Planning Act 1976, including reviewing state structure plans and land use proposals, is vital to ensure that development remains people-centric and investor-friendly. "These steps are crucial to safeguard national prosperity, boost investor confidence, and most importantly, ensure that the well-being of the people remains at the heart of development," he said.

MACC's offer to Teoh's family an insult, says Ramasamy
Urimai chairman P Ramasamy said the MACC chief should maintain his silence if he could not genuinely assist by identifying the parties responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death. PETALING JAYA : Urimai chairman P Ramasamy this evening branded the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's offer of financial assistance to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock as an insult. Ramasamy said Teoh's family was seeking closure, namely the identification and prosecution of those behind the death of the former aide to a Selangor assemblyman. 'The last thing the family needs is financial aid,' he said in a Facebook post. He said if MACC chief Azam Baki could not genuinely assist by identifying the responsible parties, he should maintain his silence. Azam should not think that the provision of funds would bring this tragedy to a close, he said. Earlier today, MACC offered to give a goodwill contribution to Teoh's family as a 'gesture of compassion'. Azam said the latest investigation found insufficient evidence to charge anyone in Teoh's death, but maintained that MACC took a serious view of the incident. He also apologised to the family for the pain and suffering they had endured over the years. Teoh died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned for hours by MACC at its Selangor office in the same building. An inquest into his death was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but the outcome of both investigations were classified as 'no further action' by the public prosecutor. In 2015, Putrajaya paid RM600,000 to Teoh's family, as well as RM60,000 in legal costs, as part of a settlement over a civil suit filed by the family. The family had named the government and 12 others in the suit for negligence over his death.

AGC appeals dismissal of committal bid against Isham Jalil
KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has lodged an appeal against the High Court's decision to reject its committal proceedings against former UMNO information chief Isham Jalil. The case stems from Isham's public statements regarding the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) trial involving ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. Isham's lawyer, Jamie Wong, confirmed receiving the notice of appeal from the AGC late yesterday. 'We were notified via email with the attached documents at 7.28 pm,' she said. On July 8, Judge K. Muniandy dismissed the proceedings, stating Isham's remarks did not threaten public confidence in the judiciary. The case originated from comments made during an interview titled 'Townhall for Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa,' where Isham allegedly questioned the recusal process involving Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who presided over Najib's 1MDB trial. The AGC argued Isham's statements risked undermining judicial integrity. The remarks were later published on The Malaya Post's Facebook page on September 30, 2023. - Bernama
