Bentley's Lavish Mulliner Interiors Will Make Even Rolls-Royce Jealous
Acura has killed off a luxury sedan that once ran with the best of them. View post: The Acura TLX is Dead: A Look Back at the Honda That Almost Beat BMW 'This is a great power bank for when you're not in your car or out of the house.' View post: Walmart Is Selling a 'Powerful' $50 Solar Charger for $17, and Shoppers Say It's 'Useful for Outdoor Activities' Shopping for a small SUV but don't need something new? Here is why shopping for an older Honda CR-V could be smarter than buying a new one. Expect a fat bill for some of these options At Bentley, the sense that you are purchasing an extraordinary automobile begins long before you get behind the wheel. The British ultra-luxury marque's Mulliner Personal Commissioning Guide offers a level of customization potential that the average Honda, Toyota, or even Mercedes-Benz driver can only dream about, and now Bentley has introduced a decadent new range of finishes and colors. These new commissioning options come just a month after the Mulliner division showed off a Bentayga finished in Candy Pink. A Quarter Of All Bentleys Feature Mulliner Content Bentley's continuous additions to the Mulliner division should come as no surprise, since one in four new Bentleys now feature Mulliner content of some kind. It's a demographic that takes great pride in creating a bespoke vehicle—and it helps when money is no object, too, while the rest of us mull over whether a $1,500 sunroof is worth it. Whether you prefer a luxury or sporty look, Mulliner has introduced new open pore wood veneers, high-gloss piano veneers to match the exterior or interior leather, and carbon fiber with a choice of four tints. It's the attention to detail that sets the Mulliner division apart. Take the open pore wood veneer, for instance, which has an ultra-thin matt lacquer. Since it has 90% less lacquer than high-gloss wood, the natural grain and texture of the wood can be fully appreciated. And, while carbon fiber normally has a black/grey finish, the new Mulliner color options include Damson, Imperial Blue, Cumbrian Green, and Kingfisher Blue. The finishing touch inside a customized Bentley is a hand-painted pinstripe running the full length of the fascia and into the door waistrails; it can be matched to either the exterior paint or the leather. Front Consoles With Luxury Yacht-Inspired Finishes The new Mulliner collection also includes a front console with a pinstriped veneer with either straight or chevron patterns. Bentley says this look was inspired by the decking of luxury yachts. Alternatively, there is a new technical metal finish called Wave for the center console. Its pattern of intertwined ribbons creates a repeating wave effect as it catches the light. Another addition is for the anodized speaker grilles for the Bang & Olufsen for Bentley audio systems. There are eight speaker grille colors, including three new ones: Kingfisher, Pillar Box Red, and Mandarin. Source: Bentley One particularly expensive-sounding option is 18k gold 'organ stop' air vent controls. These have a tactile knurled finish. Finally, new Tweed door inserts with a choice of five patterns—Cheltenham, Glen Plaid, Charcoal Herringbone, Sand Herringbone, and Damson—round out the latest updates from Mulliner. These finishes are available for the Continental GT coupe, Flying Spur sedan, and Bentayga SUV, so whatever your choice of Bentley, you have access to the latest Mulliner collection. Although Rolls-Royce is still believed by many to be the creator of the world's finest luxury cars, our recent analysis of both brands indicates that, at least as a business, Bentley has surpassed its great rival. Both offer well-heeled clients an unparalleled luxury experience, though, and the ability to configure a completely unique vehicle is a large part of that. Cars sold in Australia still use more petrol and emit more toxic fumes than advertised, new real-world testing shows
Car companies continue to sell vehicles in Australia that use much more petrol and emit more toxic fumes than advertised, despite repeated investigations identifying discrepancies in marketing. The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) on Wednesday released the latest results from its 'real-world' testing program, a four-year $14m government-funded scheme that scrutinises claims made about vehicles' fuel consumption and emissions. The country's peak motoring body said it had tested 114 popular cars, vans and utes since the program began in August 2023 and found more than 77% of these vehicles used more fuel than advertised. In its most recent study, the AAA said 25 of the 30 cars tested used more petrol than advertised, showing consumers could not rely on the fuel consumption and emissions information provided at point of sale. Eleven of the cars used 10% or more fuel on the road than they had in the manufacturers' laboratory testing which was used as the basis for advice to consumers, the AAA said. Sign up: AU Breaking News email The Hyundai Kona Hybrid recorded the greatest discrepancy – using 5.2 litres per 100km in the AAA's testing on the road, compared with its laboratory result of 3.9 litres per 100km – a difference of 33%. Hyundai declined to comment. It was followed by the Kia Stonic, which used 26% more fuel on the road; the Hyundai i30 Hybrid, which used 17%; the Toyota Fortuner, which used 16%; and the Kia Sportage Hybrid, which used 14%. Kia was contacted for comment. Toyota declined to comment. The AAA said its latest round of testing also found six of the 30 vehicles produced noxious emissions above current Australian regulatory limits, despite these same vehicle types having met those limits in lab tests. These were the Toyota Fortuner, the Suzuki Vitara, the BMW X1, the Ford Ranger, the Toyota Hi-Ace LWB and the Toyota Hi-Ace SLWB. BMW and Ford were contacted for comment. Suzuki said it was unable to respond by deadline. The AAA's managing director, Michael Bradley, said it was becoming clear carmakers continued to optimise their vehicles' performance for lab testing and 'too often' overstated their improvements in fuel use and environmental performance. 'Some vehicles perform as advertised, but most do not,' he said. Sign up to Breaking News Australia Get the most important news as it breaks after newsletter promotion The AAA said its testing program will expand in scope from August when it began releasing the results of its electric vehicle testing, checking the distance they could travel on a single charge in 'real driving conditions'. Bradley said 'range anxiety' continued to be a significant barrier to the uptake of electric vehicles and that the AAA hoped its results would give Australians greater confidence in buying this type of car. The organisation said 'independent, real-world data' was becoming increasingly important, after the introduction of the federal government's national vehicle efficiency standard. Introduced by the Albanese government in its first term, the standard is designed to bring more fuel-efficient cars into the market by penalising manufacturers of high-polluting vehicles if they exceed an emissions cap. The AAA's testing scheme was put into place after a 2015 scandal involving Volkswagen, when it was found the manufacturer had misled consumers who may have deliberately bought vehicles based on incorrect claims of lower emissions. The AAA says it tests cars on roads in and around Geelong, using strict protocols to ensure fuel consumption and emissions results are repeatable and to minimise the influence of human factors such as driving style and variable traffic flows.
