According to an official source, Kanagaraj, of Shanmugam Nagar, had obtained permission from the district administration to cut the dried branches of the peepal tree on Ramanathapuram Main Road, stating the same posed a threat to the public.
The district administration had in its order said the dry branches should be chopped only in the presence of the village administrative officer and revenue inspector during the day time.
"However, on June 24, Kanagaraj began cutting down the tree branches late at night. A member of the green care committee happened to see the same and informed the officials concerned, including tahsildar. On June 27, revenue officials seized the chopped logs from him while he was transporting the same in a vehicle and imposed a fine of Rs1.05 lakh on Kanagaraj," the source said.
While the vehicle was seized, it was released after Kanagaraj paid the fine amount.
Syed Kattuva, member of the District Green Committee, said, "We almost saved the tree from being completely cut down. The issue was reported to the district collector. At least a first information report should be filed in the case."
