Kota Kinabalu: A decade-long effort to document and preserve the traditional attire of the Kadazan-Dusun Klias community in Beaufort had finally paid off, with official recognition by the KadazanDusun Cultural Association (KDCA) central. During the Ka'amatan Harvest Festival on May 31, Datuk Joanna Kitingan, chairperson of Unduk Ngadau Ka'amatan 2025, presented the official certificate of recognition to committee members, marking a historic milestone for the community. KDCA Klias Branch Chairman Dizabeit Atak and committee members were present on the auspicious event. The acknowledgment celebrated the Manavak attire, worn by Bobolian (priestess) women, and Gambia, worn by men, which hold significant cultural and spiritual importance. SIPITANG: Four premises, including residential units and a prayer hall were destroyed in a fire in Kampung Batu 7, Kampung Pantai Sogip, here, Monday. Fire and Rescue Station Chief Calvin Joe Jeafery on Tuesday said two fire engines and six personnel were dispatched to the scene, arriving at 8.27am after receiving the distress call. Advertisement Firefighters used a 300ft hose with offensive tactics, drawing water from their vehicles. No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire and estimated losses remain under investigation. On the same day, personnel also responded to a snake intrusion at a house in Kampung Pelakat at 12.20pm, capturing the reptile that had hidden among boxes in the kitchen area. Landmark 19th Asean Navy Chiefs' Meeting gets underway in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: The 19th Asean Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM) sees the inaugural participation of the Timor-Leste Navy delegation as an observer. This edition of ANCM also hosts the 3rd Asean Multilateral Naval Exercise (Amnex), a Naval Engineering Conference, and the Asean Navies' City Parade (ANCP). It is one of the Asean programmes under the Defence Ministry and is chaired by the Chief of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain. ALSO READ: Navy parade draws large crowds at Penang Esplanade ( Themed "Advancing the Asean Navies' Unity – Synergising Innovation and Technology in Strengthening Asean Maritime Security", the meeting was officiated by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin at a hotel here on Tuesday (Aug 19) morning. ANCM aims to enhance cooperation capabilities through multilateral exercises and fostering cohesion and mutual trust among Asean navies through engagement activities and dialogue sessions. It also facilitates direct coordination of maritime operations at the operational and tactical levels. It included a parade by the various participating nations' contingents, displays by local agencies, cultural performances, maritime asset salutes and RMN helicopter flypasts.

KOTA KINABALU: Gagasan Rakyat Tanjung Aru says it is keeping close to the ground by swiftly responding to grassroots concerns. Committee member Dr Ritchie Jay Cheng on Monday led a gotong-royong with residents of Kampung Tanjung Aru Lama to repair a wooden jetty that had become dangerously unsafe. The effort came after villagers alerted him about the risk of collapse. Dr Ritchie, who sponsored the works, said the jetty is a vital daily access point for the community. 'Safety of residents is the priority. Once we received the call, we immediately went down to take action,' he said. He added that the programme not only restored a critical facility but also strengthened community spirit.
