The Pahalgam terrorist attack has dealt a major blow to Jammu and Kashmir's tourism industry.
Travel and tour operators have reported that people have started cancelling bookings for hotels and flights for J&K, particularly the Kashmir region, en masse.
In recent years, tourism had rebounded in Kashmir after prolonged shutdowns after the abrogation of Article 370 and then the yearslong slowdown because of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the industry has now got a major blow as security concerns are now expected to prevent tourists from going to Kashmir.

Terrorists killed at least 26 people in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses and sources said that terrorists initially opened indiscriminate fire and then singled out non-Muslims and shot them. This is the worst attack in J&K in many years.
Tourists' exodus from Kashmir
Kashmir in summer months usually attracts tourists from north India, but bookings are now being cancelled.
Ashish Sharma, who runs Delhi-based Skylink Private Limited, told The Indian Express that all tours for the next 10 days have been cancelled.
'At this time of the year, most bookings are from northern states, Gujarat and West Bengal. With such an attack happening, panic spreads among people. All of them have called and cancelled their hotel and other bookings. All the people who were planning to travel by road have cancelled their trips. Some people who were going by air called to cancel tickets, others must be trying to cancel online,' said Sharma added.
Furqan Bashir of Hangout Holidays Kashmir said, 'Out of the 10 tours which were scheduled for tomorrow, seven have already been cancelled. Almost all tours scheduled in April have been cancelled. Everyone is calling to cancel their bookings.'
One Kashmir-specific travel agent from Delhi told the newspaper that bookings till June are being cancelled.
'We had a tour of nine people departing for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam tomorrow morning. They called as soon as news of the attack came and cancelled their trip. We are getting calls from people who had booked with us till June. For us, May and the first week of June is the busiest time. Over the past four years, the number of tourists going to Kashmir increased and we have been handling up to 40 tourists per day in mid-May. There is a lot of panic now. I don't think we will have more than a handful of tourists this year,' said this travel agent.

Adani plans projects worth 17,500cr to expand CSMIA's capacity by '29
New Delhi: The Adani group has identified a string of projects — well over 310 that will require a capex of about Rs 17,500 crore by March 2029 — to augment the annual passenger handling capacity of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to 6.5 crore passengers annually (CPA). The projects include building a bigger Terminal 1 in place of the existing terminal, expanding Terminal 2's capacity from 4 CPA to 4.5 CPA and increasing the hourly flight handling capacity to over 52. By 2029-30, the combined capacity of CSMIA and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to touch 11.5 CPA, to "cater to the growing demands of Mumbai region and Mumbai Metropolitan Region", shows an order issued by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) recently. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) "has proposed extending existing taxiway M to link it with the physical beginning of runway 27, including the construction of a bridge over Mithi river. The proposed Taxiway M extension will create an additional holding area for aircraft.… It will be designed for Code F aircraft (that include Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380)," the order states. The hub had handled its highest ever passenger number of almost 5.5 crore in CY 2024. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Campo Lope Seco (ver precio) Verisure Since last Feb, CSMIA which has a set of cross runways — making it essentially a single runway airport — is handling upto 44 flights (down from earlier 46) during "high intensity runway operations" (HIRO) periods from 8-11am and 5-8pm. And upto 42 aircraft movement per hour (down from earlier 44) during non-HIRO period. This is now set to get a big bost in the next 3-4 years. "Some of such projects identified for implementation for enabling the airport to cater to 6.5 CPA capacity are: Reconstruction of TI to enhance the capacity from 1.5 CPA to 2 CPA. Terminal 2 northwest pier (check-in facilities, construction of bus boarding Gates (V3) T2 expansion to enhance the capacity to 4.5 CPA. Additional aircraft parking stands in the southern side of runway 09-27," states the AERA order. The other steps include construction of parking stand, constructing an airside tunnel, and an eastern taxiway parallel to runway 14-32. AERA had asked MIAL to engage UK-based National Air Traffic Services (NATS) "to provide an independent high-level review of the infrastructure and forecast demand contained in CSMIA master plan. NATS has done a study and has confirmed the peak hour theoretical capacity of 55 ATMs (aircraft movement) based on its analysis benchmarking with other busy single runway airports like Gatwick but in respect to taxiway infrastructure, it has stated that the 'master plan changes appear to offer significant benefits, but they require more detailed assessment to confirm'. The phasing of the taxiway infrastructure changes should be reviewed to ensure that sufficient capacity is provided as demand grows," the order shows. MIAL has proposed a capex of Rs 17,440 crore in the fourth control period, that is upto March 31, 2029, on the capacity augmentation at CSMIA through the various identified projects related to key areas including airside improvement and passenger terminals. T1 is proposed to be reconstructed at a cost of Rs 3,130 crore by Sept 2028. T2 expansion is projected to cost Rs 142 crore and be over by March 2027. The air traffic control technical block is projected to cost Rs 185 crore and be done by March 2027.

Muslim pilgrims 'stone the devil' as hajj nears end in Saudi Arabia
AP image Pilgrims were performing the last major ritual of the hajj - the "stoning of the devil" - on Friday, as Muslims around the globe celebrated the beginning of the Eid al-Adha holiday. Starting before day break, the more than 1.6 million Muslims taking part in the pilgrimage threw seven stones at each of three concrete walls symbolising the devil in the Mina valley, on the outskirts of the holy city of Mecca. Droves of pilgrims had already set out of their camps and accommodations in the sprawling tent city in Mina before dawn, taking advantage of the shade and cool temperature. The ritual commemorates Abraham's stoning of the devil at the three spots where it is said Satan tried to dissuade him from obeying God's order to sacrifice his son. "Our experience in Mina was easy and simple. We entered and within five minutes we had completed the stoning of the devil at the 'Jamarat'," said 34-year-old Wael Ahmed Abdel Kader, from Egypt, after carrying out the ritual at dawn. MBS' Direct Threat To Netanyahu In Rare Eid Message; Saudi Crown Prince Rallies For Palestinians Howakita, a pilgrm from Guinea, said the prospect of celebrating Eid in Mecca filled her with joy. "When I threw the stones I felt at ease. I was truly proud," she said. A day earlier, pilgrims converged on Mount Arafat, praying and reciting Koranic verses at the 70-metre (230-foot) rocky rise near Mecca, where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have given his last sermon. Many climbed the mount despite the searing heat, though numbers had thinned by midday following official warnings for pilgrims to stay inside between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like People In Andhra Pradesh Say Goodbye To Mosquitoes With This Revolutionary Solution Mosquito Eliminator Read More Undo This year's hajj saw authorities implementing a range of heat mitigation efforts alongside a wide-ranging crackdown on illicit pilgrims -- resulting in noticeably thinner crowds and a heavy security presence at holy sites in Mecca and surrounding areas. The measures were aimed at preventing a fatal repeat of last year's hajj that saw 1,301 people die in temperatures that hit 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 degrees Fahrenheit). Saudi authorities said a majority of those deaths were among pilgrims who illegally snuck into Mecca and lacked access to accommodation and other services aimed to keep pilgrims safe and protected from the searing desert heat. This hajj season has recorded the lowest number of pilgrims in over three decades, barring the years of Covid restrictions from 2020-2022. Last year, 1.8 million Muslims took part in the hajj, according to official figures. Hajj permits are allocated to countries on a quota basis and distributed to individuals by a lottery system. But even for those who can secure them, the high costs spur many to attempt the hajj without a permit, even though they risk arrest and deportation if caught. The stoning ritual in the Mina valley was the scene of a fatal stampede in 2015, when 2,300 people were killed in one of the deadliest hajj disasters. Saudi Arabia earns billions of dollars a year from the hajj, and the lesser pilgrimage known as umrah, undertaken at other times of the year. The pilgrimages are also a source of prestige for the Saudi monarch, who is known as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques of Mecca and Medina. The end of the hajj coincides with the beginning of Eid al-Adha -- an annual feasting holiday marked by the slaughter of an animal -- typically a goat, sheep, cow, bull or camel.
