Two U.S. reps to headline speaker slate at Johnstown's Showcase for Commerce defense, business expo

Yahoo23-05-2025
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Two congressmen will headline the list of participants in the 34th annual Showcase for Commerce business and defense contracting exposition this upcoming week in Johnstown.
Chief Deputy Whip U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Washington, whose 14th Congressional District includes Somerset County, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address during the John P. Murtha Breakfast Friday.
House Committee on Agriculture Chairman U.S. Rep. Glenn 'G.T.' Thompson, R-Centre, will address the Government Acquisition Leaders Briefings Thursday.
Both events are set to take place inside the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center in downtown Johnstown.
'We have a couple really good keynote addresses planned,' said Linda Thomson, president and CEO of Johnstown Area Regional Industries, which co-hosts Showcase for Commerce with the Cambria Regional Chamber.
The U.S. Department of Defense's usual presence will be missing from Showcase.
'We have really relied on industry speakers this year because a lot of the government personnel that we would normally invite are not able to travel,' Showcase for Commerce Chairman Ed Sheehan Jr. said. 'They have travel restrictions in place right now that preclude them from attending these kinds of events, and so we've relied heavily on industry.
'It should be very interesting and more of an industry perspective on things like advanced manufacturing and machine learning and artificial intelligence, an industry perspective on cybersecurity and then also workforce development.'
This will be the first Showcase without former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr. since he started serving as the event's congressional sponsor in 2013. The Democrat is no longer in the Senate, having lost last year to then-challenger and now-U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa.
Neither McCormick nor U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is expected to attend Showcase this year, but both have offered 'a lot of support,' according to Thomson.
A highlight of the event will once again be the opening reception from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday inside 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial downtown.
'The thing we're really excited about this year is that we are sold out as far as the booths (for the opening reception) and we have 13 new participants this year that are having booths, so we feel really good about that,' Cambria Regional Chamber President and CEO Amy Bradley said. 'I think the Showcase continues to evolve, and it's just nice to see new booths wanting to participate and to have such good turnout.'
Showcase will begin Wednesday with networking activities, including a golf outing and receptions. Supplier briefings and the government contracting series are scheduled for Thursday. The expo will conclude Friday with a press conference and public exhibition.

CPI report: Core inflation rises by most in six months, stoking tariff-driven price concerns

Inflation remained sticky in July, according to new government data released Tuesday, as investors stay alert to how much President Trump's tariffs are starting to affect consumer costs. The latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that "core" inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose 0.3% over the past month, surpassing June's 0.2% uptick and marking the largest gain in six months. Annual core prices rose 3.1% in July, up from June's 2.9% year-over-year increase, signaling that rising goods inflation is no longer being offset by easing services inflation. Core services prices also firmed, with shelter rising 0.2% for the second consecutive month, while transportation services and medical care services each climbed 0.8%, up from respective gains of 0.2% and 0.6% in June. Read more: July CPI breakdown: Consumers feel the crunch of accelerating inflation Heading into the report, economists expected the core Consumer Price Index (CPI) to rise 3% year over year and 0.3% month over month. On a headline basis, CPI increased 2.7% on an annual basis in July, matching June's number and slower than economists' expectations of a 2.8% rise. Month over month, prices rose 0.2% compared to June's 0.3% increase, on par with economists' estimates. The monthly drop was driven by lower gasoline prices and moderately softer food inflation. "Although core annual inflation is back to its highest level since February, today's CPI print is not hot enough to derail the Fed from cutting rates in September," Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, wrote in reaction to the report. Shah noted some evidence of tariff-related pass-through to consumers, though not yet at a level that "rings alarm bells." One example: Footwear prices jumped 1.4% in July from the prior month — the largest monthly increase since April 2021. Other categories seeing increases included furniture and bedding, recreation, household furnishings and operations, and used cars and trucks. Airline fares jumped 4% after a 0.1% decline in June, while lodging away from home and communication were among the few major indexes to fall last month, according to the BLS. Tuesday's report arrives amid ongoing trade developments that could further alter the US effective tariff rate, now hovering near 18.6% — the highest since 1933, according to the latest Yale Budget Lab estimate. Read more: What Trump's tariffs mean for the economy and your wallet The back-and-forth raises fresh questions about the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting path. Shortly following the report, investors placed a 90% probability the Fed cuts rates by 0.25% at its September policy meeting, up from 57% last month, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Traders still expect over two rate cuts by December. "The concern for the Fed is that with inventory run-down, the tariff-induced boost to inflation is likely to grow over the coming months, meaning that inflationary pressures are likely to pick up just as the Fed starts to resume rate cuts," Shah said. "Markets like today's inflation print as it means the Fed can lower rates unheeded next month — rate cut decisions in October, December, and beyond may well be more complicated," the strategist added. Stocks rose immediately after the report, while the 10-year Treasury yield (TNX) hovered below 4.3%. Allie Canal is a Senior Reporter at Yahoo Finance. Trump will be at the Kennedy Center on the same day recipients of the honors are announced

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will be visiting the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, the same day that the recipients of this year's honors are announced. Trump avoided the Kennedy Center Honors during his first term after artists said they would not attend out of protest. This year, he has taken over as the Kennedy Center's new chairman and fired the board of trustees, which he replaced with loyalists. In a Truth Social post Tuesday, Trump teased a name change for the performing arts center and said it would be restored to its former glory. 'GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS,' Trump wrote. He said work was being done on the site that would be 'bringing it back to the absolute TOP LEVEL of luxury, glamour, and entertainment.' 'It had fallen on hard times, physically, BUT WILL SOON BE MAKING A MAJOR COMEBACK!!!' he wrote. It is unclear how this year's batch of honorees were chosen, though Trump had indicated he wanted a more active role. Historically, a bipartisan advisory committee selects the recipients, who over the years have ranged from George Balanchine and Tom Hanks to Aretha Franklin and Stephen Sondheim. A message sent to the Kennedy Center press office asking how this year's honorees were selected wasn't returned Tuesday. The Kennedy Center did post this on social media, however: 'Coming Soon ... A country music icon, an Englishman, a New York City Rock band, a dance Queen and a multi-billion dollar Actor walk into the Kennedy Center Opera House ...' In the past, Trump has floated the idea of granting Kennedy Center Honors status to singer-songwriter Paul Anka and actor Sylvester Stallone, one of three actors Trump named as Hollywood 'ambassadors' earlier this year. Anka was supposed to perform 'My Way' at Trump's first inaugural and backed out at the last moment. The Kennedy Center honors were established in 1978 and have been handed out to a broad range of artists. Until Trump's first term, presidents of both parties traditionally attended the annual ceremony, even when they disagreed politically with a given recipient. Prominent liberals such as Barbra Streisand and Warren Beatty were honored during the administration of Republican George W. Bush, and a leading conservative, Charlton Heston, was feted during the administration of Democrat BIll Clinton. In 2017, after honoree Norman Lear declared that he would not attend a White House celebration in protest of Trump's proposed cuts to federal arts funding, Trump and first lady Melania Trump decided to skip the Kennedy Center event and remained away throughout his first term. Honorees during that time included such Trump critics as Cher, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sally Field. Since taking office for a second time, Trump has taken a much more forceful stance on the Kennedy Center and inserted himself into its governance. Besides naming himself chairman and remaking the board, he has also indicated that he would take over decisions regarding programming at the center and vowed to end events featuring performers in drag. The steps have drawn further criticism from some artists. In March, the producers of 'Hamilton' pulled out of staging the Broadway hit musical in 2026, citing Trump's aggressive takeover of the institution's leadership. Other artists who canceled events include actor Issa Rae, singer Rhiannon Giddens and author Louise Penny. House Republicans have introduced an amendment to a spending bill that would rename the Kennedy Center's opera house after first lady Melania Trump. Maria Shriver, a niece of the late President John F. Kennedy, has criticized as 'insane' a separate House proposal to rename the entire center after Trump. Recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors are given a medallion on a rainbow ribbon, a nod to the range of skills that fall under the performing arts. In April, the center changed the lights on the exterior from the long-standing rainbow to a permanent red, white and blue display. ___ Italie reported from New York. Positive Points Nano X Imaging Ltd (NASDAQ:NNOX) is making steady progress towards its goal of 100 non-USAC systems installations by the end of 2025. The company has expanded its commercial footprint in the US and Europe, with installations in countries like Romania and Greece following the attainment of the CE mark. Nano X Imaging Ltd (NASDAQ:NNOX) has established collaborations with prestigious academic institutions such as Duke University and Kaiser University to enhance clinical education and research. The company is developing a mobile imaging solution to expand access to high-quality diagnostic imaging, which could create new opportunities for service delivery and revenue growth. Nano X Imaging Ltd (NASDAQ:NNOX) has entered into a multi-year volume supply agreement with a leading global electronics manufacturing services provider to support scalable production and reduce manufacturing costs. Negative Points The company reported a GAAP net loss of $14.7 million for the second quarter of 2025, an increase from the $13.6 million loss in the same period of 2024. Revenue from AI solutions remains low, with only $0.1 million reported for the quarter, accompanied by a gross loss of $2.0 million. Operating expenses remain high, with sales and marketing expenses increasing due to commercialization efforts in the US market. The company is still in the process of securing import permits and certifications for certain markets, such as Mexico, which could delay expansion efforts. Nano X Imaging Ltd (NASDAQ:NNOX) is facing challenges in achieving profitability, with expectations for break-even in AI solutions not anticipated until 2026. Q & A Highlights Q: How many systems were operating during the quarter that resulted in $221,000 in imaging-related revenue? A: More than 20 systems are currently operating and scanning patients. We are targeting 100 systems by the end of the year, and we have identified almost each one of them for installation and operation. Q: Are you expecting any of the 100 leads to be capital sales, or will they all be placed via the MSA model? A: A part of them will be capital sales. Q: How many states in the United States are you now approved in for users to operate a system? A: We are currently approved in 8 states. Q: Could you talk about the current revenue model? Is it mostly subscriptions versus CapEx in licensing? A: Our leading model is the subscription model, but we also expect a mixture of CapEx sales and subscriptions, especially in the US and European markets. Q: The AI solutions line shows volatility. Should we expect more stable trends going forward? A: Yes, we anticipate continuous growth in AI solutions, with 2026 expected to be a break-even year in terms of revenues and expenses. The revenue recognition policy impacts the current figures, but we expect more stable trends as agreements mature. Q: What trends should we expect in operating expenses, and when might quarterly losses start to decline? A: Operating expenses have been stable due to efficiencies, but sales and marketing expenses are increasing due to US market deployment. We expect revenue growth in the second half of the year to lead to a decrease in operating losses. Q: Could you discuss your activities and plans for RSNA and geographical expansion? A: We will present the full Nano-X solution at RSNA, including the ArcX system. Geographically, we are focusing on the US and EU markets, with plans to expand in Latin America and other regions as permits and certifications are secured. Q: Could you elaborate on your geographical presence and expected uptake in different regions? A: Our focus is on the US and EU markets, with systems ready for shipment to Romania and Greece. We are also working on permits for Mexico and exploring opportunities in Latin America. The Far East and Africa are not immediate priorities.
