Sarbananda Sonowal to visit Norway, Denmark to boost maritime ties
The visit holds strategic importance as the minister will lead the Indian delegation comprising senior officials from the Central and state governments, along with leading players from the private sector.
'The maritime sector is a cornerstone of economic growth and national development. Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has not only become the world's fourth-largest economy but is also working towards securing its place as a major maritime nation,' said Sonowal.
'As we move forward toward realising the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, it is vital that we unlock the full potential of our Blue Economy, which offers immense opportunities in trade, connectivity, clean energy, and innovation,' he added.
During the visit, Sonowal will address a high-level meeting on oceans at the 60th edition of the Nor-Shipping event in Oslo and inaugurate the first 'India Pavillion' there.
He will also chair the India@Nor-Shipping Country Session and hold global outreach for the upcoming 'India Maritime Week 2025' scheduled from October 27-31 in Mumbai.
On the sidelines of Nor-Shipping event, the minister is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his ministerial peers from Japan and Norway, and meet leading European shipping companies, component manufacturers and technology developers. Sonowal will also visit Oslo Port Authority.
The India Pavilion also has a dedicated pavilion of 'National Maritime Heritage Complex' and engage global delegates on India's 5000-year-old civilisational maritime heritage and global linkages, according to the ministry.
While in Denmark, among other engagements, he will interact with the students of 'Blue MBA' at the Copenhagen Business School on the economic opportunities that India's high-growth journey presents for future managers and leaders.
'My visit to Norway and Denmark — both recognised as global maritime leaders — is aimed at building strong, future-ready partnerships. These engagements will help us exchange best practices, explore joint ventures, and align efforts for a greener and more resilient maritime ecosystem,' said the minister.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut Monday welcomed the BJP-led NDA's decision to nominate Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the vice-presidential election, praising and calling him a 'balanced and non-controversial personality'. At the same time, Raut said the Opposition INDIA bloc should not divert attention from the larger issue of electoral malpractice by getting into a contest it cannot win. The vice-presidential election, scheduled for September 9, was necessitated after incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, citing health reasons. On Sunday, BJP president J P Nadda announced Radhakrishnan's candidature after a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, appealing for a consensus to ensure an unopposed election. While Nadda has appealed for consensus, Opposition leaders are expected to discuss the matter in an INDIA bloc meeting this week. Raut made it clear that while the Shiv Sena (UBT) welcomed the nomination of a leader associated with Maharashtra, his party would go by the INDIA bloc's collective decision. However, he also stressed that the Sena (UBT) and party chief Uddhav Thackeray always feel that elections for such constitutional posts should not be politicised, and candidates should be elected unopposed. 'He has been working calmly as governor of Maharashtra for the past year, and is a very balanced, non-controversial personality in politics. We are glad that the Maharashtra governor is getting an opportunity to become the vice-president of the country. We always welcome and congratulate such appointments,' Raut told reporters in Delhi. 'But he is the NDA's candidate, and we are in Opposition. The INDIA alliance will take a collective decision, and the Sena (UBT) will go with whatever the bloc decides. There is also a meeting to be held with Rahul Gandhi and [Mallikarjun] Kharge in Delhi, where these issues will be discussed,' he added. INDIA bloc numbers The Sena MP pointed out that the Opposition front does not have the numerical strength to defeat the NDA nominee in the vice presidential elections. 'Since the INDIA bloc doesn't have enough numbers to win the VP polls, attention shouldn't be diverted from the real issues: vote chori, manipulation of voter lists, and the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) in Bihar. These are the issues Rahul Gandhi has raised, and they must remain the focus,' he said. Raut said the Shiv Sena (UBT) will abide by the bloc's decision, and that Uddhav had already conveyed his views to Rahul and Congress president Kharge. Raut also criticised the Election Commission over its demand that Rahul Gandhi submit an affidavit to back his allegations of vote theft. 'This is arrogance. Will the EC also ask Anurag Thakur to file an affidavit when he makes similar allegations? Or is the Commission's courage only for Rahul Gandhi?' he asked. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena announced its support for the candidature of Radhakrishnan. He represented Coimbatore in Lok Sabha twice, and also headed the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit.

‘Vote chori' row: Opposition mulls impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar
A day after Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar asked Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi to either submit his allegations of vote theft in a sworn affidavit within a week or apologise to the nation, the INDIA bloc is learnt to be considering moving an impeachment notice against him. Sources said the matter was discussed at a meeting of the floor leaders of the Opposition bloc chaired by Rajya Sabha LoP and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge earlier in the day. The decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against Kumar is likely to be announced at a press conference scheduled for 3 pm. 'The ECI (Election Commission of India) cannot relinquish its Constitutional duty and evade genuine queries of political parties. The 'right to vote' is the most important right, given to us by the Constitution of India. INDIA will protest any attempt to stifle Democracy,' Kharge said. The possibility of the impeachment notice evoked a sharp reaction from the BJP, with the ruling party questioning the Opposition's intention. 'The whole of India is seeing the behaviour of the Congress party and Opposition parties for the last few days, especially with regard to the SIR issue and the Bihar elections…that the activities of the Parliament are being obstructed. No work is being allowed to be done. What is the intention behind this? What is the intention behind the tour that Rahul Gandhi is doing? There is only one intention behind this, and that intention is how to save the infiltrators,' said BJP MP Sambit Patra. 'This is a natural process that it becomes the responsibility of the Election Commission to clean up the infiltrators … How to win elections through infiltrators, how to use infiltrators, how to promote the politics of appeasement, this is what Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party have been doing…' he added. How is a CEC removed? Article 324 (5) of the Constitution states that 'the Chief Election Commissioner shall not be removed from his office except in like manner and on the like grounds as a Judge of the Supreme Court and the conditions of service of the Chief Election Commissioner shall not be varied to his disadvantage after his appointment'. It further provides that 'any other Election Commissioner or a Regional Commissioner shall not be removed from office except on the recommendation of the Chief Election Commissioner'. The grounds for the removal of the CEC and other Election Commissioners (ECs) are also set down in Section 11 of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, which regulates the appointment, conditions of service and term of office of the CEC and the ECs. The Judges Inquiry Act, 1968, Section 3, which pertains to 'Investigation into misbehaviour or incapacity of Judge by Committee' provides that 'If notice is given of a motion for presenting an address to President praying for the removal of a Judge…(a) in the case of a notice given in the House of the People, by not less than one hundred members of that House; (b) in the case of a notice given in the Council of States, by not less than fifty members of that Council…' Following this, the Act states further, the Speaker or, as the case may be, the Chairman may, after consulting such persons, if any, as he thinks fit and after considering such materials, if any, as may be available to him, either admit the motion or refuse to admit the same.' If the motion is admitted, the Speaker or, as the case may be, the Chairman 'shall keep the motion pending and constitute, as soon as may be, for the purpose of making an investigation into the grounds on which the removal of a Judge is prayed for, a Committee consisting of three members'. One of the members 'shall be chosen from among the Chief Justice and other Judges of the Supreme Court', one from among the Chief Justices of the High Courts, and one 'a person who is, in the opinion of, the Speaker or, as the case may be, the Chairman, a distinguished jurist'. This Committee 'shall frame definite charges against the Judge on the basis of which the investigation is proposed to be held' and such charges 'together with a statement of the grounds on which each such charge is based shall be communicated to the Judge and he shall be given a reasonable opportunity of presenting a written statement of defence within such time as may be specified in this behalf by the Committee.'

Ghavri makes strong allegations against BCCI Gharvi, who played 39 Tests and 19 ODIs for India, went uncensored and held BCCI's petty politics responsible for the premature retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. 'It's due to internal politics within the BCCI, which is hard to understand. And I think this is the reason he retired prematurely. Even Rohit Sharma retired prematurely. They were asked to go out. It's not like they wanted to leave. They wanted to continue. But the selectors and BCCI had different ideas. It was a matter of some kind of petty politics,' Ghavri added. Given that both Rohit and Kohli retired just a few days ahead of the squad announcement for the England tour, the odd timing was enough to leave people skeptical about whether they really intended to quit the format. Additionally, why would Kohli return to play a Ranji Trophy match earlier this year if he had decided to move away from the format? Furthermore, Rohit, in a casual chat with Michael Clarke, during the IPL break, had clearly stated that he was looking forward to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
