Exonerated US death row inmate turned campaigner dies in Irish house fire
She spent 17 years in prison in the US, a number of them on death row, following a conviction for murder.
Ms Jacobs was released in 1992 after her sentence and imprisonment were quashed.
Irish police said emergency services were alerted to the incident at Gleann Mhic Mhuireann in Casla at around 6.20am on Tuesday.
Gardai said the bodies of a woman aged in her 70s and a man in his 30s were recovered from inside the home after the blaze was brought under control by firefighters.
They have also appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
'Both bodies were taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway for post-mortem examinations, while the scene was preserved for a technical probe,' they said.
'The results of the post-mortem examinations will inform the direction of garda inquiries.'
A statement on Ms Jacobs' campaign website confirmed she had died in the incident, along with her caretaker.
'We don't have many details at this time, but investigation is ongoing and our contacts in Galway are providing us with information as it comes in,' they said.
'Sunny was a fierce advocate for justice and a guiding light for many.
'As someone who survived wrongful conviction – including five years in solitary confinement under a sentence of death, and 17 years of imprisonment total – she knew the difficulties of incarceration and the struggle to regain one's footing after being exonerated and released.'
They said that Ms Jacobs, along with her late husband Peter Pringle, established The Sunny Centre to help other exonerees through the difficult process of building new lives after being released from prison.
'Together, they brought many exonerees to the centre in Ireland to help them process their trauma and move forward to the next steps of their healing,' they said.
'During and after the pandemic, they continued to support and counsel exonerees remotely by video and phone.
'After Peter's passing in 2022, Sunny continued the work of The Sunny Centre. She hosted exonerees and started a training programme for those who wanted to carry forward her vision to establish similar centres for exonerees within their communities.'
The statement concluded: 'Fair winds and full sails on your crossing, Sunny. Your memory is a blessing to us.'

Credit: Getty The court showdown comes after Rossi - who claimed to be an Irish orphan called Arthur Knight - was extradited from the UK in January last year. The witness - who can't be named - told Salt Lake County she started a relationship with Rossi, 38, while she was recovering from a traumatic brain injury. But things turned sour and she said he started 'becoming controlling and saying mean things to me'. She went on to describe an incident where he pounded on her car and used his body to block her from pulling out of a garage. They went inside the house where she told of being pushed onto a bed, held down and 'forced me to have sex with him'. The woman also told the court how she initially met Ross through the dating website Craigslist, and they quickly planned to marry. She said she paid for their dates and even covered the cost of Rossi's rent. Rossi's legal team are arguing she was motivated by resentment over their failed relationship. Lawyers for Rossi, who appeared in the Utah court under his real name Nicholas Alahverdian, earlier said the case had pieces missing like 'a puzzle from a thrift shop.' Prosecutors accuse Rossi of sex attacks on two women in Orem, Utah. Rossi appeared in court in a dark suit, sitting in a wheelchair and had an oxygen tube in his nostril. How UK cops caught US fugitive Nicholas Rossi after he dodged capture by erasing tattoos, faking death & using false IDs We told how Rossi quit the US in 2017, sparking an international manhunt. Witnesses recounted seeing the naked man who had been on the yacht screaming at people to help an unconscious Nolan. Her boyfriend has since been named as 34-year-old sales exec Nicholas DiRubio by who also identified the boat owner as 60-year-old Christopher Durnan. Nolan's cause of death is believed to be a suspected drug overdose, though it hasn't been officially determined, according to the New York Post. It comes as new details emerged about Nolan's recent divorce and a lawsuit that accused her of taking $34,000 from her previous company's bank account. RECENT DIVORCE Nolan, who was born in Ireland and moved to New York when she was 26, filed for an uncontested divorce from her former husband, Sam Ryan, earlier this year, according to the Irish Independent. The divorce proceedings were continuing as recently as April 8, filings by the New York County Supreme Court said. She was dating another man, 34-year-old sales exec Nicholas DiRubio, at the time of her death and staying with him in the Montauk area for the summer, according to the Daily Mail. Nolan reportedly went to talk with Durnan, a well-known figure at the yacht club, before she died, the New York Post reported. The boat owner founded a large insurance firm that specializes in workers' compensation and reportedly invested over $200,000 in the designer's swimwear line, according to the Daily Mail. Both names are nods to the Grateful Dead. The day after the horrific discovery of Nolan's body, pictures of the boat revealed a white powdery substance on the seats of Ripple. At the time of writing, both of the boats have left the spots where they were previously docked at the club, the Daily Mail said. 10 Christopher Durnan, 60, who owns the boat where Nolan died Credit: Instagram 10 A white powdery substance seen on the Ripple docked at the Montauk Yacht Club on August 6, the day after Nolan was found dead Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 'SHORT TIMELINE' Nolan had told DiRubio she was at a business meeting on the night she died, the Independent said. In the hours before her death, she reportedly called her boyfriend and told him she was going to book an Uber and get home around 1 am. "It was just her and the boat owner on the boat," a source close to Nolan's family told Irish outlet "She phoned her boyfriend and she told him she was just about to be picked up by an Uber." The source noted, "There is such a short timeline between when she made the call and when the 911 call was made." Timeline of Martha Nolan's death Young entreprenur Martha Nolan, 33, was found dead on a yacht in the Hamptons last Tuesday. Below is a timeline of her final days: Tuesday, August 5 Just after midnight, East Hampton police respond to a 911 call from a man who found a woman unresponsive on a docked boat at the Montauk Yacht Club. Good Samaritans attempt CPR but first responders pronounce her dead at the scene. Wednesday, August 6 An initial autopsy finds no evidence of violence. The woman is identified as Martha Nolan-O'Slattara. Thursday, August 7 Nolan's mom tells the Irish Independent that her family is "numb with shock." Nolan reportedly had plans to marry DiRubio before her death. "Martha and her boyfriend went to Ireland at Christmas. He met her family and getting married would have been the next step," the source told Nolan often showcased a life of private jets and glamorous vacations on her social media accounts before her death. But she faced legal battles throughout her rise in the fashion world. 2022 LAWSUIT Nolan and East x East swimwear co-founder Dylan Grace were slapped with a lawsuit in April 2022, according to a court filing by Manhattan luxury sunglasses brand Out East Accessories. The company accused the pair, two former Out East employees, of stealing $34,000 from the company's bank account, along with the entire eyewear inventory, the complaint said. Grace and Nolan allegedly changed the passwords belonging to the company owners and locked them out of their bank account, emails, and social media accounts, court records claimed. 'In the weeks leading up to their termination, and for months thereafter, Grace and Nolan ransacked Out East, stole all its assets and essentially destroyed the company,' the lawsuit claimed. Nolan denied all allegations. The case was settled in June 2022 and was dismissed the next month after both parties reached a confidential settlement. The duo went on to launch East x East swimwear in 2023. Nolan and Grace remained close as co-founders, as shown in Grace's heartbreaking tribute on social media after her death. "We dreamed big together, laughed harder than anyone else could understand, and built so much from nothing," he wrote on Instagram. "I'm truly blessed and grateful to have had you in my life. Love you so much Mar. The designer co-founded East x East, a swimwear line, and fashion accessories brand Duper. She spent her summers in the Hamptons, where she put on pop-up shows for her designs and worked with wealthy clients in Montauk. Urgent recall of supermarket cheese over deadly Listeria bacteria fears
Dairy lovers have been warned not to eat a popular goat's cheese because of the risk of a deadly bacteria. A batch of SPAR Chèvre Goats Cheese 100g may contain dangerous Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Horgan's Delicatessen Supplies has issued an urgent recall of the products which have a use-by date of 12 August 2025. The implicated products were distributed both to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has told cheese fans to return the affected products to the shops, where customers will be given a full refund. Warnings will be displayed in all retail stores selling the product, the FSA added. More Trending SPAR has over 400 stores in Northern Ireland and over 450 stores in the Republic of Ireland. Listeria monocytogenes infection, or listeriosis, can present as mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal symptoms. These include vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea. Severe infections can cause serious complications in rare cases. Pregnant women, babies, the elderly and people with weakened immune symptoms are more vulnerable to infections. It takes on average three weeks for symptoms to appear, but that can range from three to 70 days. The recall comes weeks after an 'extensive outbreak' of listeria monocytogenes in Ireland linked to ready meals produced by Ballymaguire Foods. A range of chicken curries, lasagnes, bolognaises, pasta bakes, cottage pies, and chow mein dishes were all affected by the recall, with one person being killed. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said there is no evidence these food recalls are linked.
