Corcel, Sintana Energy Partner as Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) 2025 Champion Sponsor Amid Onshore Kwanza Drive

Zawya2 days ago
Oil and gas companies Corcel and Sintana Energy have partnered as Champion Sponsors of the Angola Oil&Gas (AOG) 2025 conference. Taking place September 3-4 in Luanda, the event represents the premier meeting platform for the country's oil and gas sector. The sponsorship comes as Corcel and Sintana Energy work towards unlocking onshore development opportunities in Angola's Kwanza basin and is expected to support new deals and collaborations as the country strives to revitalize onshore production.
Sintana Energy entered the Angolan market in May 2025 through the establishment of a strategic partnership with Corcel. The partners signed an agreement whereby Sintana acquired a 5% indirect net interest in Block KON 16 in the onshore Kwanza Basin. The acquisition was a result of Sintana securing a 5.88% stake in a newly-formed Special Purchase Vehicle – now holding Corcel's 85% interest in KON 16. Set to close in Q3, 2025, the $2.5 million transaction will fund future exploration activities at the block, underscoring the value of partnerships in financing exploration and production in Angola.
AOG is the largest oil and gas event in Angola. Taking place with the full support of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas; the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency; the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute; national oil company Sonangol; and the African Energy Chamber; the event is a platform to sign deals and advance Angola's oil and gas industry. Block KON 16 is considered a highly prospective asset with proven petroleum systems in both post- and pre-salt intervals. To unlock this potential, the partners have executed a joint study and bid agreement to assess exploration and production opportunities. Furthermore, Corcel mobilized £1.1 million via a share placing to support ongoing exploration efforts. The funds will be deployed towards the execution of a 2D seismic program at KON 16 in Q3, 2025. Purpose Global Resource Fund led the placing and has joined Corcel as a new institutional shareholder. Beyond Block KON 16, Corcel also has non-operated interests in Blocks KON 11 and KON 12. These brownfield development opportunities historically produced oil via the Tobias and Galinda fields – with peak output reaching 17,500 barrels per day (bpd) and 2,700 bpd respectively. In 2025, Corcel restarted intervention activities at the Tobias-13 and Tobias-14 wells in Block KON 11, targeting pre-salt and post-salt leads. Data was also collected for Block KON 12.
Corcel and Sintana Energy's AOG 2025 sponsorship aligns with these efforts and is expected to create new avenues for industry collaboration and engagement. The partners have demonstrated their willingness to partner to unlock Angolan onshore production as well as their commitment to exploring potential exploration and production prospects. For Sintana Energy, Angola offers a strategic investment opportunity, whereby the company can leverage its experience in neighboring Namibia to deliver commercial finds. Sintana Energy currently has stakes in several promising onshore and offshore licenses in Namibia, including the offshore PEL 79 – which holds the Mopane discoveries – PEL 82, PEL 83, PEL 87 and PEL 90. Onshore, the company has stakes in PEL 103 in the Waterberg basin.

US oil and gas M&A activity quadrupled last year, report says

NEW YORK: Mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. oil and gas sector more than quadrupled last year despite softer commodity prices as energy companies boosted spending to improve efficiency and profits, according to an Ernst & Young study published on Tuesday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The jump in dealmaking marks a shift in strategy after years of focusing on shareholder returns over growth as commodity prices retreated from their 2022 high. CONTEXT The sector-wide consolidation has been led by a handful of megadeals by large players, including Exxon Mobil, Diamondback Energy and ConocoPhillips. KEY QUOTE Companies flush with cash were focused on driving efficiency through scale, said Bruce On, partner at EY's strategy and energy transactions group. 'It's a relook at process, tools, workforce and everything around your operations,' On said. BY THE NUMBERS Leading energy companies spent $206.6 billion on mergers and acquisitions in 2024, up from $47.9 billion the previous year, according to the Ernst & Young study. Oil and gas companies cut spending on dividends and share repurchase payments by about 25% last year to $29.2 billion. Money spent on tapping oil and gas also fell slightly, with exploration and development expenditure down 7% year on year at $85.5 billion. Profits fell 10% last year to $74.8 billion, less than half the record level recorded in 2022, primarily owing to soft commodity prices, the report said. Exxon Mobil was the biggest buyer in 2024 with total property acquisition costs of $84.5 billion. The company announced the acquisition of U.S. shale oil producer Pioneer Natural Resources in October 2023 and completed the $60 billion purchase last May. ICAO DGCA urges Asia-Pacific States to adopt ACI recommendations

Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), the trade association representing over 600 airports, made strong recommendations at the 60th ICAO Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for Asia and Pacific regions in Sendai, Japan recently. The Members of the Conference endorsed the ACI APAC & MID's recommendations and encouraged States to take appropriate steps for implementation. ACI APAC & MID estimates that by 2053, airports in Asia-Pacific alone will handle 10 billion passengers annually—equivalent to today's total global traffic. To prepare for this exponential growth, governments and regulators must introduce forward-looking policies and promote affordable air travel, while Airports should improve safety standards, strengthen climate resilience, and incorporate security-by-design from the beginning to prepare for this exponential growth. Against the backdrop, ACI APAC & MID presented four papers advocating for smarter, safer, sustainable and connected airports. Key areas included careful adaptation of ICAO SARPS, climate adaptation, easing travel barriers, and integrating security into design, all aimed at making airports future-ready. Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, said: 'Asia is already home to six of the world's fastest-growing markets, while countries like China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand are poised to enter the exclusive billion-passenger club. With over half of all new aircraft deliveries destined for this region and air traffic movements expected to hit 47 million by 2043, the challenge is not about growth but readiness. The DGCA Conference continues to provide a positive direction in the region's approach to airport development. We are pleased with the overwhelming support from states on our policy recommendations and the positive conclusions of the conference, which reflect a shared commitment of our industry.' • Transposition of ICAO Annex 14 SARPs: ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East cautioned against a one-size-fits-all model that may hamper operations and safety considerations. The paper highlighted efforts by ACI, ICAO APAC, and several States in developing the guidance for transposing Annex 14 Vol. I SARPs into national aerodrome standards. ICAO urged States to apply the guidance and provide feedback, and the conference fully endorsed the establishment of national aerodrome standards based on ICAO Regional Guidance. • Climate Adaptation Guidance and Tools: ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East introduced its Climate Adaptation Guidance, Risk Maturity Tool and Climate Risk Assessment Tool enabling airports to assess and mitigate risks from extreme weather events such as heatwaves, cyclones, and floods. The Conference adopted the recommendations and agreed to engage in regional collaboration to boost climate resilience. • Barriers to Air Travel for Consumers (co-sponsored by IATA): ACI APAC & MID and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) jointly urged States and Territories to remove discriminatory taxes on aviation, consider the financial viability of airport operators when determining concession fees and simplification of visa processes to make travel more affordable and accessible. • Enhancing Security with Appropriate Airport Design (co-sponsored by Singapore and the US): With support from Singapore and the USA, ACI APAC & MID reiterated its call to embed security into airport design through a "security-by-design" approach—ensuring the evolving requirements of security operations are addressed early to avoid costly retrofits and inefficiencies. The Conference fully endorsed the proposed action to integrate security considerations into the design of new and refurbished airport infrastructure. As the region enters the new phase of growth, ACI APAC & MID remain committed to supporting airports and working with governments and industry stakeholders is making aviation continue to deliver social and economic benefits.
