SINGAPORE – Established in Craig Road in 2012 , Spanish restaurant Binomio has relocated to a swanky new home at the Raffles Hotel Singapore.
It is now helmed by Spanish executive chef Felix Noguera, 42, who has worked at three-Michelin-starred Spanish establishments Can Fabes by the late chef Santi Santamaria and Aponiente by Angel Leon.
Under chef Noguera, the menu has been refined with a mix of new dishes and returning favourites.
Start your meal at the 50-seat outdoor bar section with tapas and drinks.
Highlights include ensaladilla de gambas y encurtidos ($16), a creamy potato salad topped with prawns, pickled gherkins and capers; and the show-stopping bienmesabe de lubina ($19), nuggets of battered sea bass fillets fried to golden perfection. The considered kick of vinegar and paprika in the batter elevates the dish, along with the striking whole fish bone as part of the presentation.
It is not a Spanish meal without croquetas (from $18 for four pieces) – the deep-fried bites are available at the bar or in the restaurant – with options such as cod, mushroom, truffle and the signature Binomio, made with chicken thigh and 60-month aged Iberico ham.
Continue the meal inside the 76-seat restaurant, which includes a 12-seat private room, with elegantly plated carpaccio de lubina con vinagreta de trufa negra ($34), thin slices of sea bass finished with a black truffle vinaigrette, toasted nuts and chives; and the indulgent bogavante con salsa de marisco ($78), succulent lobster topped with a rich lobster stock and chive oil.
Finish with a classic Basque cheesecake ($14) with a gooey centre or churros with chocolate sauce ($12).
For best value, go for the weekday set lunch (from $42++) or Sunday brunch (from $88++).

Timor-Leste out to prove cynics wrong as Asean membership nears

Timor-Leste's President José Ramos-Horta arriving at the Shangri-La Singapore hotel on May 29, ahead of the Shangri-La Dialogue. ST PHOTO: KUA CHEE SIONG There is almost no latency in Timor-Leste's President Jose Ramos-Horta's response when I ask him whether he was surprised that Asean leaders agreed for his country to formally join as the grouping's 11th member as early as its next meeting in October. After all, it would have been perfectly understandable if the consensus had been that the country could do with a bit more time to fulfil outstanding conditions for accession, rather than fixing a provisional deadline that would inevitably come with pressure. Eurostar plans 5-hour trains from London to Frankfurt, Geneva

Eurostar's plans come as it faces criticism over high prices and reliability. PHOTO: AFP LONDON - Eurostar Group Ltd plans to launch direct train services from London to Frankfurt and Geneva next decade, connecting the UK's capital to two of Europe's key financial centres. The journeys would each take roughly five hours, a spokesperson for the operator said. As part of the new services, Eurostar, which is majority-owned by France's state rail company SNCF, said it would invest approximately €2 billion (S$2.9 billion) to increase its fleet by around 30 per cent. Eurostar's plans come as it faces criticism over high prices and reliability. It could also face opposition from other operators pushing to launch rival services to end its 31-year monopoly on international trains from Britain. Mr Richard Branson's Virgin Group and FS Italiane Group are among the companies seeking to challenge Eurostar on its flagship route between London and Paris. Offering direct trains from London to Frankfurt and Geneva would allow bankers and other finance professionals to continue their work and make calls during their journeys, unlike on planes. Eurostar currently operates services in five countries: the UK, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany. The most popular route, London to Paris, attracted more than 280,000 passengers in 2024. The company behind St Pancras, the London train station where Eurostar operates, and Getlink SE, the Channel Tunnel operator, said earlier in 2025 they wanted to open more services to France and new routes to Germany and Switzerland. In 2024, a report from campaign group Transport and Environment (T&E) rated Eurostar the worst-performing of 27 European rail services. The survey considered factors such as ticket prices, reliability and experience. Eurostar disputed the findings. Severe cold front bringing snow in South Africa causes fatal accident, power outages

REUTERS/Esa Alexander/File Photo JOHANNESBURG - A severe cold front sweeping across South Africa since the weekend brought heavy snowfall which has led to road closures, power outages and a fatal road accident, officials said. Five people were killed in a road accident along the N2 highway due to the adverse weather, Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose told local broadcaster Newzroom Afrika on Tuesday. The South African Weather Service warned citizens late last week there would be a big drop in temperatures this week across the country, accompanied by disruptive rain, damaging winds, and snow over eastern areas. South Africa regularly receives snowfall during its winter months from June through August, with temperatures diving below zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). Snow has been reported since Monday across provinces including Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, prompting closures along sections of the N2 highway that connects the provinces, according to the KwaZulu-Natal transport department. Power utility Eskom said in a post on X that it was "experiencing a high number of customer calls nationally, due to widespread power outages caused by inclement weather." More resources were being secured to ensure prompt resolution to the power outages, Eskom said. The weather service forecast that the cold front would persist through midweek.
