Richardson and Bjergfelt set world records in Turkey but Tanfield misses out

The Guardian10 hours ago
British duo Matt Richardson and Will Bjergfelt both set world records in Turkey on Thursday.
Richardson became the first man to go under nine seconds in the 200m flying start, recording a time of 8.941sec at the Konya Velodrome. The 26-year-old, who switched allegiance from Australia to Britain in December, surpassed the previous record set by Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands.
Richardson said: 'I did it. I came here to do that, and that's what I did, so it's a pretty cool feeling to accomplish the one thing that I came out here to do. A bit of relief there. It was a lot faster [than I've previously ridden], I was basically just a passenger. I gave the bike a bit of direction and it was just steering itself almost.'
Bjergfelt, meanwhile, broke the men's C5 hour record, covering 51.471km in 60 minutes. Bjergfelt comfortably surpassed the previous mark of 47.569km, becoming the first para-cyclist to break the 50km barrier.
'I don't think it's quite hit home yet that I've smashed the world record on the track and that's a dream come true,' said the 46-year-old.

Richardson takes flying start world record a year on from nation switch

Aug 15 (Reuters) - British track cyclist Matt Richardson set the world record in the 200-metre flying start, becoming the first person to break the nine-second barrier a year on from his defection from Australia. Richardson, who won three medals for Australia at the Paris Olympics, recorded a time of 8.941 seconds at the Konya Velodrome in Turkey on Thursday. The time shaved more than a tenth of a second off the previous mark of 9.088 set by Dutch Olympic champion Harrie Lavreysen at the Paris Games last year. "It's cool to be able to call myself the fastest cyclist of all-time," Richardson said in a British Cycling statement. "It was a lot faster than I've previously ridden. I was basically just a passenger. I gave the bike a bit of direction and it was just steering itself almost." Richardson's change of allegiance straight after the Olympics took Australia by surprise and generated some criticism from elite former cyclists. Richardson brushed off the criticism, saying he made a "good return" on the investment Australia's elite cycling programme had put into him.

Hall of Famer Andre Johnson becomes latest NFL star to have his house burglarized as thieves ransack mansion

NFL legend Andre Johnson has become the latest sports star to fall victim to a burglary, with thieves running off with treasures including his Hall of Fame ring. The former wide receiver joins the likes of Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes and Luka Doncic in the growing group of athletes who have been robbed in recent times. Johnson. who spent more than a decade with the Texans and was last year inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, saw his Texas home burglarized late last month. According to KPRC, police said the house was 'ransacked' after criminals broke a bedroom window. The thieves made off with jewelry, watches and football memorabilia from Johnson's Hall of Fame career. It's said the 44-year-old reported the burglary to police and is keen to pursue criminal charges against those responsible. Several big-name athletes have been burglarized while playing road games over the past year. Back in February, police charged seven alleged members of a South American crime ring after break-ins targeting the likes of Burrow, Mahomes and Kelce. Last month, New York authorities made a major breakthrough in their probe into the break-in at Burrow's home, with a pawn shop owner pleading guilty to buying and selling stolen items from athletes' properties. News that Johnson had been targeted only emerged after rapper Lil Keke put out a video on social media. 'Andre Johnson is my brother,' the rapper said on Instagram. 'That ring isn't just jewelry, it's his legacy, his grind, his family... he's the first Houston Texans Hall of Famer. 'He dedicated his life here, his career here, and also he resides here as a Houstonian. That makes it much, much more important. Man, we family. It's a family message. 'Over the weekend, someone broke into my brother's home and took some items that represent his legacy, represent his dedication, his hard work, his family. We need to recover that and get that back. This isn't like a car or a jersey hanging around. This represents his career and his family, for real.' Lil Keke continued: 'Let's come together as a Houston family and put ears to the street, our nose to the ground as a Houston family and find out who got these items and recover them and get them back to our brother... they represent much much more than some money. He family, we family.'

Shedeur Sanders' mom steals spotlight again in latest NFL appearance... days after being slammed for 'embarrassing' behavior

Just days after stealing the headlines at her son Shedeur's NFL debut for the Cleveland Browns, Pilar Sanders has returned to the sport - this time for her other son Shilo. The brothers have both landed in the NFL after playing college ball together at Colorado - coached by their father Deion - last season. And it appears their mom will be very busy this season as she travels across the country to take in both of their fledgling careers - with plenty of social media posts to boot. After she was slammed by some for her 'embarrassing' sideline behavior at Shedeur's game last weekend, she returned to the spotlight in a custom dress with Shilo's face on for his Tampa Bay Buccaneers debut. Posting on social media, she wrote: 'First NFL Game and Yep @shilosanders brangs that BOOM Everytime! #proudmom #tampabaybuccaneers #shilosanders #28' In a series of videos and photos, the 50-year-old - who is separated from the NFL stars' father Deion - showed off her red outfit and vlogged her experience at the game. Last week, she was ripped by Browns fans after traveling to watch Shedeur - fourth-choice quarterback - make his own first appearance in the pro game. She watched on from the sidelines on the day and, after the game, shared a video of herself celebrating the occasion. The caption read: 'Aaaaaand you know itttt!!! Momma's always present!' Some fans, however, were not impressed by Pilar's actions and swiftly made their feelings known by responding in the comments to her Instagram post. One fan wrote: 'I would be embarrassed if my 60-year-old mom conducted herself like that'. For clarity, Pilar Sanders is 50. 'She acted like a kid,' another said. Meanwhile one user brutally commented: 'She is so annoying'. One fan, however, did leave a lengthy comment. They said: 'But as a mother pulling up to my son's games, I would conduct myself differently. This is young woman behavior. You are so fine. Pilar received some heat online for her behavior at Shedeur's game last weekend Shedeur is fourth-choice quarterback at Cleveland and is battling to make the final roster 'You dont have to be posting pic licking your teeth and wiggling. Im not hating at all, but her sons are so respectful and respected by many in the world, that she should just carry herself showing more class'. Fans were left stunned by Sanders balling out on his debut in the NFL, with one even calling it 'history-making', and another claiming he has 'proven his doubters wrong'. Shilo also enjoyed a productive debut, and has turned himself into a fans' favorite in Tampa Bay in a very short space of time. It is as yet unclear whether he will make the final roster ahead of the season, but he is being tipped to be picked up elsewhere should he fall short in Tampa Bay.
