Kerala nuns' arrest reignites political and ecclesiastical fault lines in State ahead of polls

The Hindua day ago
With Kerala heading into back-to-back elections in a few months, the State's political stage appears to be resetting itself around the charged issue of two nuns currently languishing in a Chhattisgarh jail, offering the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) a potent rallying point and a strategic opening to turn the spotlight on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sensing the political resonance of the issue, both the UDF and the LDF have already despatched delegations to the prison, a move that aims at reinforcing their connect with the Christian community. Their intervention has been matched by sharp attacks on the BJP's Kerala unit, which has been struggling to shake off perceptions of its parent outfit's alleged hostility towards minorities.
Francis George MP, leader of the Kerala Congress and part of the UDF delegation in Chhattisgarh, has maintained that the BJP's hidden face in Kerala stands exposed through this episode. 'They have tried to woo the Christian community here. But this incident has revealed that their political agenda does not include any real concern for our community. Outside Kerala, their affiliates like the Bajrang Dal and the Vishva Hindu Parishad thrive on hatred against Christians,' he pointed out.
'TKerala nuns' arrest'
Jose K. Mani, MP and chairperson of the rival Kerala Congress faction, too has reached Chhattisgarh and is expected to meet the nuns on Wednesday. The party led by him, the Kerala Congress (Mani), too has framed the arrest as a targeted assault on grassroots-level empowerment work led by the Catholic Church in tribal and marginalised communities.
The protests led by both the coalitions are gathering momentum, especially in central Travancore, where Christian community wield considerable political clout.
Meanwhile, the episode appears to have stirred unrest within the Catholic Church itself with a section of the clergy voicing concerns over the silence of certain Bishops, some of whom had earlier publicly lauded the BJP's national leadership and cultivated ties with party leaders at the local level.
'Whenever incidents of violence against Christians were reported from North India and Karnataka, it was Archbishop Peter Machado of Bengaluru who took the initiative to approach the Supreme Court seeking justice,' noted a senior Catholic priest. 'Neither the Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church nor the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) were willing to support him or join the case.'
'Even when Father Stan Swamy was branded a Maoist, imprisoned, and died in custody, the Church leadership in Kerala stuck to the line that Christians were safe under BJP rule — and continued Christmas and Easter courtesy visits to its leaders, ' he added.

Maharashtra govt. to cancel all ‘fake' birth certificates of ‘illegal' Bangladeshis by Aug. 15: Minister

Over 42,000 'fake' birth certificates acquired by Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Maharashtra have been cancelled by the government so far, State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Wednesday. He added the BJP-led Mahayuti government will cancel all such illegally acquired birth certificates by August 15 as part of a special drive. Collectors to take action 'Many Bangladeshis have illegally acquired birth certificates in Maharashtra by conniving with talathis (revenue officials). We have formed a task force to look into it. District Collectors have been given the responsibility of cancelling all 'fake' certificates. These certificates will be cancelled by August 15,' Mr. Bawankule said. District Collectors will have to send copies of the cancelled certificates to the Health Department and the Revenue Department, the Minister said. 'Forged documents' A Special Investigation Team was earlier formed to investigate the matter after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya claimed that 'hundreds' of birth certificates had been issued to Bangladeshi nationals on the basis of forged documents. The former MP had alleged that several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya persons were residing illegally in various parts of Maharashtra by using fake documents. 'Role of officials, agents' Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Somaiya said, 'So far, the Maharashtra government has cancelled 42,198 birth certificates. There is a clear nexus among government employees, agents, and applicants, which needs to be investigated.' According to data provided by the Border Security Force, at least 110 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in the State have been detained since January to be pushed back into the neighbouring country.

10 Years Of Probe, 7 In Trial, 17 For Verdict: A Timeline Of The 2008 Malegaon Blast Case

Last Updated: The trial, which started in 2018, got over on April 19, 2025, with the verdict set to be delivered today 17 years after the incident took place in September 2008 Seventeen years after a blast rocked Maharashtra's communally sensitive Malegaon, an NIA court is likely to deliver its verdict in the highly polarising case – complete with its own set of twists and turns – on Thursday. Six persons were killed and more than 100 injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in the town, located about 200 km from Mumbai, on September 29, 2008. The trial, which started in 2018, got over on April 19, 2025, and the case was reserved for judgement. The case was initially probed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before being transferred to the NIA in 2011. Seven accused, including BJP leader and former MP Pragya Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, faced trial in the case for offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, and the Indian Penal Code. Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Sameer Kulkarni are the other accused. 2008-2009: THE BIG TWIST The Maharashtra ATS, led by Hemant Karkare, takes over the investigation and, for the first time in India, it is alleged that the blast was carried out by individuals linked to Hindu right-wing groups. October 2008: Now a BJP leader, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Shrikant Purohit of the Indian Army are arrested. The two are alleged to have links to Abhinav Bharat, a Hindu right-wing group, and suspected of carrying out a 'revenge attack" on the Muslim community. November 2008: Evidence, including the motorcycle used in the blast allegedly owned by Thakur, is recovered. Chief investigator and special IGP Hemant Karkare is martyred in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. 2009-2011: THE POLITICS OF IT The ATS widens its net and makes more arrests, including other right-wing activists like Dayanand Pandey, Sameer Kulkarni, and Ajay Rahirkar. But there is massive political backlash as Hindutva outfits accuse the probe of being politically motivated. January 2009: The ATS files its first chargesheet naming 11 accused and three wanted persons, with Thakur and Lt Col Purohit as key conspirators. Charges include provisions of the UAPA, IPC, and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). July 31, 2009: MCOCA charges are dropped by a special court citing lack of evidence related to other cases against the accused. July 19, 2010: The Bombay High Court reinstates MCOCA charges. April 13, 2011: The case is transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). 2016-2017: NIA ALLEGATIONS, KEY ACCUSED GRANTED BAIL In a significant development, the NIA drops MCOCA charges from its supplementary chargesheet and accuses the ATS of planting evidence and forced confessions. In 2017, the key accused in the case – Thakur and Lt Col Purohit – are granted bail. May 13, 2016: The NIA files a supplementary chargesheet, dropping MCOCA charges stating that the application of the law by the ATS is questionable. It alleges that the ATS planted evidence and used coercive tactics during questioning. April 25, 2017: The Bombay High Court grants bail to Thakur on health grounds. August 21, 2017: The Supreme Court grants bail to Lt Col Purohit after nine years in jail. December 27, 2017: MCOCA charges are dropped but a special court refuses to discharge Thakur and six other accused, ordering them to face trial under the UAPA, IPC, and the Explosive Substances Act. 2018 TO PRESENT: TRIAL & VERDICT The trial in the case began 10 years after the tragic incident with the verdict now set to be delivered 17 years later. October 30, 2018: Charges are framed against seven accused, including Thakur and Lt Col Purohit. December 2018: Trial formally begins. September 2023: Prosecution closes its evidence, having examined 323 witnesses with 37 turning hostile. April 19, 2025: Final arguments conclude, and the court reserves its judgment. July 31, 2025: Verdict awaited. About the Author News Desk The News Desk is a team of passionate editors and writers who break and analyse the most important events unfolding in India and abroad. Brahmin politics simmers in UP as parties vie for their support

Lucknow: Amid the PDA poll narrative of the opposition, it is Brahmin politics that has started simmering in Uttar Pradesh. The situation came to the fore days after senior SP functionary and leader of opposition in UP assembly, Mata Prasad Pandey, accused the BJP of "insulting the Brahmin community". Now, the focus is on BJP's next move to counter the charge. Pandey, a Brahmin, ratcheted up the recent incident in which UP minister of state for women and child welfare, Pratibha Shukla, staged a dharna on July 24-25 at Akbarpur police station, accusing cops of targeting her aides. Her husband and former MP, Anil Shukla Warsi, who was present at the dharna, claimed that Brahmins were being unfairly targeted. He even called up deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, urging him to intervene in the case and protect the "interests of Brahmins". The SP functionary's accusation that the BJP has insulted Brahmins is seen as an attempt to breach BJP's upper-caste vote bank, especially Brahmins. BJP sources said the party may seek to neutralise the opposition charge by hefting a Brahmin face at a prominent position within the organisation in UP or the Centre in a bid to consolidate its position among the upper caste, which has been traditionally supportive of the saffron outfit since the peak of the Ram temple movement in the early 1990s. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo This, experts said, may help the BJP send a reassuring message to the community besides undercutting the SP's narrative that the BJP was getting overly focused on non-dominant OBCs at the cost of Brahmin representation. SP ally Congress too has been seeking to firm up its presence among the Brahmins since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when it appointed senior party leader Avinash Pandey as in charge of UP. BJP has been elevating Brahmins at prominent positions. The foremost example was the appointment of Brajesh Pathak as deputy CM in the UP cabinet. Pathak replaced Dinesh Sharma, who held the position during the first tenure of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Sharma is now a Rajya Sabha MP and one of the contenders for the post of UP BJP chief. Another Brahmin face who is eyeing the top organisational job is former Basti MP and current party in charge for Assam, Harish Dwivedi. In the UP BJP organisational structure, two vice-presidents — Vijay Bahadur Pathak and Triyambak Tripathi — and one general secretary — Govind Narayan Shukla — are Brahmins. A BJP functionary said the party certainly looked to consolidate its support among the Brahmins. Experts underscored how the social engineering comprising Brahmins swung the political fortunes of BSP chief Mayawati, who got an absolute majority for the first time in 2007. The community is also said to have supported SP in 2012 before shifting back to BJP in 2017.
