John Terry mocks James Maddison and Spurs after Europa League final victory

Metro22-05-2025

John Terry couldn't resist poking fun at Tottenham after the north London club finally ended their 17-year wait for silverware with victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.
Brennan Johnson squeezed the ball past Andre Onana in the 42nd minute to send Spurs fans into a frenzy – and the scruffy effort proved decisive, with United coming up short in pursuit of an equaliser at Bilbao's San Mames Stadium.
The result secured Tottenham a spot in next season's Champions League and meant Ange Postecoglou ultimately delivered on his promise to lift a trophy in his second season at the helm.
United, meanwhile, are left to lick the wounds at the end of their worst season in over half a century and the setback is likely to have major ramifications when it comes to the club's aspirations in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Tottenham trio Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Bergvall and James Maddison were forced to miss Wednesday's showpiece the final through injury, but all three watched on from the sidelines in Spain and joined in the post-match celebrations with the rest of Postecoglou's jubilant squad.

A beaming Maddison channeled his inner JT at the full-time whistle as he swapped his black suit for Tottenham's full home kit to blend in with his team-mates, later referencing his costume change on Instagram.
'From suit… to kit. Full @johnterry.26 mode. Anything to say tonight John? [laughing emjoy],' the Spurs star joked.
Terry famously celebrated in full kit – with shinpads – after Chelsea's Champions League triumph in 2012, despite having to sit out the final that year due to an ankle injury.
On his decision to change into the Tottenham strip, Maddison told TNT Sports: 'They said I had to, to get the medal.
'I didn't want to do a John Terry when he went on with full kit and shin pads, but what a special feeling.'

Maddison's social media call-out went unanswered on the night, Terry took to Instagram to have the last laugh this morning.
'I remember my first trophy. Ah bless them [laughing emoji],' the legendary ex-Chelsea and England captain responded to Maddison's post.
'Get the tequila out [laughing emoji]. Great season from you boys, you should all be proud! [eyes emoji] 16 to go….
After reminding Maddison of the 17 trophies he won at Chelsea, Terry sarcastically added: 'After that performance I think you have a chance [thinking emoji]. You just have to live for 900 years [laughing emoji].'

In a later post, Terry shared a video of the many trophies and accolades he he collected across his career, which he now proudly shows off in a personal museum in his home.
'Nice to see you took it well mate [six laughing emojis],' Maddison fired back.
Speaking to CBS Sports shortly after the final whistle, an overjoyed Maddison dedicated the win to Tottenham's long-suffering supporters. More Trending
'What a special feeling,' he said.
'Winning makes the season all alright – the pain of not being able to play is not being able to help the team.
'It is a brilliant achievement and a way to qualify for the Champions League but it is more winning for the fans. They have had years of pain.'
Asked how he plans to celebrate the occasion, Maddison replied: 'Plenty of beer.'

Gio van Bronckhorst to land Liverpool job under Arne Slot as Premier League champions go double dutch

The former Rangers manager is set to replace Johnny Heitinga on the Anfield coaching staff after his departure to Ajax Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set to join Arne Slot's coaching staff at Liverpool. The former Rangers boss is poised to return to the dugout for the first time since leaving Besiktas last year, with the English Premier League champions to add him to Slot's staff as an assistant to his compatriot and fellow Feyenoord coaching alumni. ‌ The Reds started the search after Johnny Heitinga left this summer to take the manager's job and former club Ajax. ‌ And Slot is set to go Dutch again by bringing van Bronckhorst into the fold. Former Everton man Heitinga proved a popular figure in the Anfield dressing room, working under slot for just over a year. But the chance to take over at his hometown team in Amsterdam was too big to turn down and he was appointed after previous boss Francesco Farioli stepped down following a final day collapse that saw Ajax miss out on the Eredivise title by a point to PSV. Now van Bronckhorst, who was in the Ibrox hotseat for a year before being sacked in November 2022 for slipping too far behind Celtic, is set for a return to football with the Merseyside club. The Dutchman was replaced at Rangers by Steven Gerrard's former assistant and ex-Liverpool academy coach Michael Beale, with many feeling in hindsight that van Bronckhorst was harshly treated by the Gers hierarchy. ‌ Van Bronckhorst began his career at Feyenoord before joining the Light Blues in 1998. After three years in Govan, he joined Arsenal before making the move to Barcelona, the finishing his playing career back at Feyenoord. He became the boss at De Kuip in 2015 and led the Rotterdam club to their first Eredivise title for 18 years in 2016. Ex-Rangers boss 'close' to surprise new job with EPL giants

The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge at Ibrox, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. Read more: Liverpool are now 'close' to appointing Van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff, claims The Athletic. He will replace his fellow countryman John Heitinga, who recently left Anfield to take on the role of head coach at Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee. He now appears set to move to Liverpool as the club looks to build on a title-winning campaign. Speaking in April of this year, Van Bronckhorst was asked whether he'd like to become the permanent manager of Rangers once again: "No," he said live on TNT Sports. "For me, that book is closed. "Maybe as a fan, but no." Rangers recently appointed Russell Martin as the club's new head coach following a change of ownership this summer. He officially got down to business earlier this week ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
