India's Covid-19 Cases Cross 6,000 Mark, States Remain On Alert
India's active Covid case tally crossed the 6,000 mark with 769 new infections being reported in the last 48 hours, according to the Union health ministry data released on Sunday.
Kerala continues to be the most affected state, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi, according to the ministry.
Due to the rising Covid cases, the Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness and has instructed all states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, official sources had said.
There are 6,133 active Covid cases in India, and six more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, the ministry said. Official sources have maintained that most cases are mild and managed under home care.
Since January this year, 65 deaths have been reported in the country. There were a total of 257 active patients in the country on May 22.
A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, to evaluate the Covid situation and preparedness measures.
Representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, central government hospitals in Delhi, and all states and Union Territories were part of the meeting.
Official sources on June 4 said state and district surveillance units under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are closely monitoring Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).
"Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, " an official source said.

Centre for exempting insurance premium from GST: Samrat Choudhary
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) The Centre has proposed exempting life and health insurance premium from GST, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and convenor of insurance GoM Samrat Choudhary said on Wednesday. Currently, health and life insurance premium attracts 18 per cent GST. The Group of Ministers (GoM) on life and health insurance will submit its report to the GST Council. The report will also include views and concerns expressed by some state finance ministers, he said. 'The Centre's proposal is clear that the insurance sector's individual and family (policies) should be exempt from GST. This has been discussed and the GoM report will be presented to the Council," Choudhary told reporters here after the meeting of the GoM. 'All members have given their approval for lowering rates. Some states have given their own views," he said, adding a final call on rates will be taken by the Council. Choudhary is the convenor of the 13-member state GoM on health and life insurance. The Centre's proposal on insurance is part of the overall next-Gen GST reform proposal under which goods and services tax will be levied at 2 rates– 5 and 18 per cent — based on categorisation of products as merit and standard. The 13-member GoM on health and life insurance was set up in September to suggest tax rates. The panel, which includes ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, has been mandated to submit its report to the GST Council by October end. In 2023-24, the Centre and states collected Rs 8,262.94 crore through GST on health insurance premium, while Rs 1,484.36 crore was collected on account of GST on health reinsurance premium. NEET UG dental counselling derails after Centre order
Bhopal: Just a day after it began, the first round of State Combined Counselling was cancelled by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) here on Tuesday. The move came after a letter from the Union ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) dental education section, dated Aug 14, 2025 that ordered the cessation of admissions at Guru Govind Singh College of Dental Science and Research Centre , Burhanpur. The timing of the ministry's directive - issued four days before counselling began but apparently not acted upon until after allotments were made - has sparked criticism from students and education advocates. With 100 BDS seats now removed from the matrix, the entire first round of allotments has been scrapped. "In view of the above the allotment of first round declared on Aug 18 stands cancelled. Fresh allotment result after removing 100 BDS seats in Guru Govind Singh College of Dental Science and Research centre, Burhanpur will be declared on Aug 20 and admission process will restart from 3 PM on Wednesday.
