Group of US politicians express concern over proposed Irish trade ban with Israeli settlements
Sixteen US congress members have signed a letter calling for the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025, which seeks to ban the trade of goods between Ireland and Israeli settlements, to be investigated.
Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, for New York, is leading the group of politicians. The letter references the US anti-boycott laws, which seek to oppose boycotts against America and its allies.
Should the US find the Irish ban constitutes a 'foreign boycott', America may take action to counteract the ban and include Ireland on a purported 'boycott list', potentially suspending future US business deals in Dublin and elsewhere.
The Irish government has been aware for a number of years that the anti-boycott movement in the US, made up of a number of American politicians, would take issue with the Occupied Territories Bill.
The group's letter reads: 'This measure is part of a broader effort aligned with the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to economically isolate Israel.
'Such policies not only promote economic discrimination but also create legal uncertainty for U.S. companies operating in Ireland.'
It added that the Irish ban on trade between illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine would 'not only promote economic discrimination but also create legal uncertainty for US companies operating in Ireland'.

It added: 'We encourage the Treasury Department to assess whether Ireland's proposal indicate that they require or may require participation in or encouragement of an international boycott within the meaning of [US anti-boycott mechanisms].'
Speaking to
The Journal
prior to the general election in November, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the US embassy have previously expressed concern over the ban, but that Ireland was clear in its position on the matter.
He said: 'I had already made the decision, prior to that communication. I was aware of that it's not a new concern [from the US]. That's been there a long time.
'It's not a surprise that the US Embassy would communicate that, they communicated that five or six years ago, and that's been a standard position.
'Our position is that it relates to the Occupied Territories, not to Israel. And that might be a point of difference in the US, because, in the US, people might look at it differently – but we have a very clear view of it here.'
Politicians on the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee last month
recommended that trade of services should be included in the law.
Chairperson of the committee, Fianna Fáil's John Lahart, said while the Bill has been described as largely symbolic, it remains 'important'.
He added that Ireland's reputation
has been tarnished by some
, stating that there have been smears and lies said about the country due to the position it has taken on this piece of legislation.

'More unbearable suffering': Condemnation of Israel's new plans for Gaza
The Israeli government's plan for a full-scale military takeover of Gaza will cause more deaths and suffering and must be halted immediately, the United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said on Friday. Israel's political-security cabinet approved a plan early on Friday to take control of Gaza City, as the country expands its military operations despite intensifying criticism at home and abroad over the devastating almost two-year-old war. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel intended to take military control of the entire Gaza Strip, but the plan announced on Friday stopped short of this. On Friday, Mr Turk said: "The Israeli government's plan for a complete military takeover of the occupied Gaza Strip must be immediately halted. It runs contrary to the ruling of the International Court of Justice that Israel must bring its occupation to an end as soon as possible, to the realisation of the agreed two-State solution and to the right of Palestinians to self-determination. "On all evidence to date, this further escalation will result in more massive forced displacement, more killing, more unbearable suffering, senseless destruction and atrocity crimes. The war in Gaza must end now. And Israelis and Palestinians must be allowed to live side by side in peace. "Instead of intensifying this war, the Israeli government should put all its efforts into saving the lives of Gaza's civilians by allowing the full, unfettered flow of humanitarian aid. "The hostages must be immediately and unconditionally released by Palestinian armed groups. Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel must also be immediately and unconditionally released." After Israel's security cabinet approved a plan to take over Gaza City, Turkey's foreign ministry condemned it and called on the international community and US Security Council to act to prevent the plan's implementation. The ministry also said Israel must immediately halt its war plans, agree a ceasefire in Gaza, and start negotiations for a two-state solution. Turkey said each step by Israel's government to continue what it called Israel's genocide and occupation of Palestinian lands dealt a heavy blow to global security. Israel has repeatedly rejected accusations of carrying out genocide in its war in Gaza. Hamas described the Israeli government's plan to take control of Gaza City as a 'new war crime', warning the operation would cost it 'dearly'. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the group said in a statement: "The Zionist cabinet's approval of plans to occupy Gaza City and evacuate its residents constitutes a new war crime that the occupation army intends to commit against the city. "We warn the criminal occupation that this criminal adventure will cost it dearly and will not be an easy journey." Meanwhile, German chancellor Friedrich Merz has said his country will not authorise any exports of military equipment that could be used in Gaza 'until further notice'. The move by Germany, which had previously stopped short of tougher lines against Israel's government taken by some of its European Union allies, appears likely to further isolate Israel over the military takeover plan which has been condemned by supporters of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. British prime minister Keir Starmer said Israel is 'wrong' to approve plans to occupy Gaza City saying the new offensive will 'bring more bloodshed'. 'The Israeli government's decision to further escalate its offensive in Gaza is wrong, and we urge it to reconsider immediately," he said. 'This action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages. It will only bring more bloodshed.' Spain and the Netherlands have also condemned the Israeli government's decision to escalate its military occupation of Gaza.

Number of people on Live Register increases to 169,600
169,600 people were on the Live Register in July, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the Central Statistics Office. This was a rise of 0.7%, or 1,100 people, compared to the previous month. The unadjusted total stood at 185,627 people, of which 52% were male and 73% were Irish. The 25-34 years age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register at 44,446 people or just under 24% of the total. Meanwhile, 12.3% of all claimants, or 22,743 people, were under the age of 25. Dublin recorded the largest percentage increase in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to July, up 5.6%. Kildare saw the second highest increase, up 2.8%. The largest decreases were in Kerry, down 13.7% and Clare, down 9.5%. The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance. Figures published yesterday from the CSO showed that the unemployment rate increased slightly in July when compared to the previous month.
