
Retired Ford worker's wallet returned after 11 years stuck in an engine
And he didn't — at least not for more than a decade.
Guilford, 56, lives in Petersburg, Michigan. He retired from Ford in January 2024, but in 2014, he was repairing the electrical systems of vehicles at Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne when, unbeknownst to him, his wallet slipped out of his shirt pocket, landing amid the transmission system of a red 2015 Ford Edge SUV.
The wallet would end up going on a 151,000-mile odyssey across multiple states before a mechanic in Minnesota last month discovered that the obstacle that was preventing him from putting the vehicle's airbox back in place was — a man's leather wallet.
"He messaged me in the middle of the night with a picture of it and said, 'Did you lose your wallet years ago? Lol. I found it. It's in the engine of a car. It's in Minnesota,' " Guilford told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. 'For 11 years, that wallet was riding on top of the transmission, held in there by the airbox."
'Hey Schmitty, my wallet's missing!'
Just how the wallet disappeared in the first place is quite a tale.
Guilford said he worked 35 years for Ford in various plants and his expertise centered on electrical. In 2014, his job was to make heavy electric repairs in the garage area at Michigan Assembly in Wayne. That means as cars came off the assembly line, 'if there was a minced wire in the floor harness, it came to me for repair. If the lights didn't work, or whatever, it came to me.'
At that time, Ford assembled its Focus and C-Max cars at Michigan Assembly. Today, Ford's website says, the plant employs close to 6,000 people and builds the Ford Ranger pickup and Ford Bronco SUV.
Guilford said his team excelled at its job. So when some of Ford's other plants in North America got behind on repairs of the vehicles they built, Ford would sometimes send them to Michigan Assembly for the fix. The week before Christmas 2014, he said, about 2,500 vehicles arrived from other factories that needed electrical work.
One day, Guilford did something unusual and put his wallet in his shirt pocket because his pants did not have pockets. That would prove to be a mistake.
"I was working on the floor harness underneath that particular car," Guilford recalls of the 2015 Edge. He remembers the car because it was shortly after that vehicle was completed when he noticed his shirt pocket felt lighter.
'I told my buddy (Dave Schmit), who was my work partner, 'Hey, Schmitty, my wallet's missing!' " Guilford said.

A night-long search for the missing wallet
Guilford's anxiety escalated with each minute he couldn't find it. The wallet contained only $15 cash, but his driver's license and Ford employee ID were in there. He also had "a couple hundred dollars in gift cards" for Cabela's sporting goods store. He had planned to use those cards to buy Christmas gifts for his kids.
The first vehicle he and Schmitty looked through in their search for the wallet was that 2015 Edge Guilford had just worked on. Guilford recalled: 'We were looking through it for my wallet forever. I thought I lost it under the carpet of that car because I had pulled the carpet up on that car to work on the main wiring harness."
Ford spokesperson Jessica Enoch said "it's exceedingly rare" for any plant workers to lose a personal item in a vehicle they are working on and she said there are policies to secure personal items to prevent it from happening. Enoch did not provide examples of those policies and declined further comment on this story.
Guilford worked the midnight shift at the time and when the day shift arrived, nearly all of his team and the day side crew were on the hunt.
"Everybody tried to help me find my wallet and we didn't find it," Guilford said. "We were looking in the cars. Everybody was going car-to-car. We had a list of the cars we worked on. I couldn't say I lost it in that particular car (referring to the 2015 Edge), but it was in one of the cars."
It would turn out that Guilford's first instinct that the wallet was in that 2015 Edge was right. Guilford had also worked on the transmission wiring on that vehicle. Today, he reasons that when he bent over, that was when the wallet fell out of his shirt pocket.
"It landed on top of the transmission, but it must have fell down into a little cubby, which I didn't see and know that I had done that, and I put the car back together," Guilford said in hindsight. "You'd think it would have fell out later, but it was locked in there in that airbox."
A Ford Edge's secret revealed
The airbox contains the vehicle's air filter. It is in the front part of the engine compartment. Guilford's wallet was on the transmission, possibly held in place by the airbox when that 2015 Edge left Michigan Assembly in 2014. The car was shipped to Arizona first where it was bought by the person who owns it now and lives in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, which is about 95 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
That's where Chad Volk, who opened LC Car Care in Lake Crystal in 2018, became well acquainted with the 2015 Edge. Volk, 40, said he started "wrenching" on cars with his dad in the garage at age 5 and later became a diesel mechanic for a construction company. He told the Detroit Free Press he has done various maintenance on that Ford Edge for years.
But in late June, while replacing the SUV's cooling fans, Volk discovered the car's secret.
He had pulled out the airbox, something he'd done several times before on that car, only this time it wouldn't slide back into place. So Volk looked closer to investigate and saw the wallet sitting on top of the transmission.
"I was surprised. You find stuff all the time, usually tools," Volk told the Free Press. "I looked through it and I see a Ford Motor Co. badge. I thought I'm going to try finding this guy to see if I can get it back to him."
Volk knew the wallet was old, but Guilford's driver's license said that he lived in Michigan. So he took a "stab" at finding Guilford. On social media, Volk found a Richard Guilford in Michigan who had worked for Ford and he thought that's got to be the guy. So on June 30 Volk privately messaged Guilford.
'I was like, 'Hey did you lose a wallet years ago? I found it in the engine in a car,' " Volk said. "He said he lost it in the factory and they looked for it for days. (Guilford) said, 'There's even $15 in it for you.' He told me he just retired in January and this was the gold piece to the pie."
Volk declined to keep the $15 cash that Guilford offered him from what was inside the wallet. Instead, he said he walked three doors down from his auto repair shop to the post office. There, he paid $10.80 to mail the wallet back to Guilford in Michigan.
'The funny thing is I literally had the airbox out of the car a couple weeks before that and I didn't see it," Volk said. "My guess is it was jammed somewhere else and fell to the right spot, because an inch one way or the other, it would have been on the ground and no one would have ever found it."
A guy who tries 'to make someone's day brighter'
Volk said he has been longtime friends with the 88-year-old man who owned the Edge, which has about 151,000 miles on it. The man died the day after Volk found the wallet.
"So I didn't get to tell him about it. But I told his son, Dan, about it and he got a kick out of it," Volk said, admitting it is a cool story. "The car is still in the family.'
Volk said it never occurred to him to keep the wallet or to toss it out.
"My first instinct was just to jump on (social media) and find him," Volk said. "I wanted to try to do as much as I can to get it back to him. It's how I am. For small jobs, I don't usually charge people, just to make someone's day brighter. I'm just a one-man shop. It was a friend's car too, so that made it all the better."
As a result of his good-willed gesture and the publicity he's received from local media about returning the wallet, he won a new customer. Volk said a man drove several miles to Volk's shop to have Volk service the man's classic car.
"He said he trusted me," Volk said. "I got new followers on Facebook and other people too."
Guilford said everything in the wallet is in pretty good shape considering the journey it endured. Guilford said Cabela's assured him it would issue him new gift cards.
"Some things in it were hot and crisp, think of how hot that car got," Guilford said. "It doesn't look like it ever got wet, just hot. That little corner kept (the wallet) completely dry and completely preserved. I want the wallet to stay as it is. It is a memento."

A Nation of Lawyers Confronts China's Engineering State

After Donald Trump announced ruinously high tariffs on China in the spring, a simple reminder of that country's growing technological power forced him to back down. Shortly after Trump's April 2 tariff announcement, Beijing abruptly suspended exports of rare-earth magnets. Automakers around the world panicked. These magnets—manufactured in Chinese factories from crucial metals extracted mostly from Chinese mines—have become essential for building cars. Ford Motor paused production at a plant in Chicago. Automotive-lobbying organizations in the United States and Europe warned that car companies were weeks away from halting production. A few reportedly were considering moving some production to China in order to maintain access to supplies. On May 12, the White House agreed to lower tariff rates for China before it had announced trade deals with Europe, Canada, Japan, or other allied countries. China produces 90 percent of the global supply of rare-earth magnets, which are not the only products that Beijing can deny the rest of the world. Decades of industrial policy and fierce entrepreneurialism have created the world's mightiest manufacturing machine. Chinese firms are also dominant producers of many pharmaceutical ingredients (especially for antibiotics and ibuprofen), battery materials, and entire categories of electronics components—not to mention smartphones, household appliances, toys, and other finished goods that American consumers want. In cutting off rare-earth magnets, officials in Beijing flexed but one finger. If they wanted, they could have strangled vital sectors of the American economy. How did America lose so much productive capacity to China and end up in such a vulnerable position? Think about it this way: China is an engineering state, which treats construction projects and technological primacy as the solution to all of its problems, whereas the United States is a lawyerly society, obsessed with protecting wealth by making rules rather than producing material goods. Successive American administrations have attempted to counter Beijing through legalism—levying tariffs and designing an ever more exquisite sanctions regime—while the engineering state has created the future by physically building better cars, better-functioning cities, and bigger power plants. Engineers have quite literally ruled modern China. As a corrective to the ideological mayhem of the Mao years, Deng Xiaoping promoted engineers to the top ranks of China's government from the 1980s onward. By 2002, all nine members of the politburo's standing committee—the apex of the Communist Party—had trained as engineers. Xi Jinping studied chemical engineering at Tsinghua University, China's most prominent science institution. At the start of his third term, in 2022, Xi filled the politburo with executives who had experience in aerospace and weapons. Huge bursts of construction define today's China. A person born in 1993—when the country built its first modern expressway—was able, when she reached the legal driving age 18 years later, to motor across a network of highways that surpassed the length of America's interstate system. As part of China's economic transformation, officials in Beijing have directed the construction of high bridges, large dams, enormous power plants, and entire new cities. The corporate sector, abetted by government policies that encourage manufacturing, is fixated on production too. A rough rule of thumb is that China produces a third of the world's manufacturing, including essential products such as structural steel and container ships. [Derek Thompson: The disturbing rise of MAGA Maoism] The United States, by contrast, has a government of the lawyers, by the lawyers, and for the lawyers. More than half of U.S. presidents practiced law at some point in their career. About half of current U.S. senators have a law degree. Only two American presidents worked as engineers: Herbert Hoover, who built a fortune in mining, and Jimmy Carter, who served as an engineering officer on a Navy submarine. (Hoover and Carter are remembered for many things, especially for their dismal political instincts that produced thumping electoral defeats.) Lawyerly instincts suffused Joe Biden's economic policy, which brushed aside the invisible hand in favor of performing surgery on the economy—a subsidy scheme for one corporation, an antitrust case against another. Biden hoped to reindustrialize America via landmark bills such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, but his administration's legalistic commitments repeatedly tripped up the pace of construction. Executive agencies were so obsessed with designing rules for how to do things that little ended up being built. Efforts to connect rural areas to broadband or create a network of electric-vehicle-charging stations barely broke ground before voters reelected Donald Trump. Trump is not a lawyer, but he—like many wealthy Americans—is no stranger to using the courtroom to get what he wants. His business career and his presidency have been rife with lawsuits: against business partners, political opponents, news outlets, and sometimes his own lawyers. Trump's governing style has a litigious air to it too: flinging accusations left and right, intimidating people into dropping their opposition, besmirching people in the court of public opinion. Where Biden was plodding and proceduralist, Trump is naturally inclined toward bare-knuckle lawfare. The lawyerly society has some important advantages. You can't build companies worth trillions without the rule of law to set up an environment where the rich feel safe to invest. The U.S. remains home to most of the world's most valuable companies, in part because lawyers protect their right to profit off of their intellectual property. But the fact that wealthy companies and individuals can easily assert their interests in court is hardly a guarantee of broad economic progress for a society. The United States has made the geopolitical mistake of bringing lawyers to a showdown with China on trade and technology. The first Trump administration levied an initial round of tariffs on Chinese goods and added scores of Chinese tech companies to trade blacklists. The Biden administration refined technology-export controls, designing exquisite webs to ensnare Chinese chipmakers, telecommunications firms, and any company hoping to deploy AI. Xi Jinping, meanwhile, surrounded himself with scientists and engineers. Xi grew up in a China whose Communist Party leaders nursed grievances about imperialist incursions. They understood the Soviet Union to have become strong and modern through heavy industry. China unveiled its first Five-Year Plan in 1953, the year that Xi was born. In the fall of this year, Xi will put the finishing touches on the 15th Five-Year Plan. [Thomas Wright: Trump wasted no time derailing his own AI plan] In the intervening years, ceaseless construction has helped reinforce the Communist Party's political resilience. Building so many homes, bridges, and power plants means that the material benefits for most of China's population are widely spread. Chinese citizens have seen their conditions of life improve immeasurably over the past 40 years. The steady improvement of parks and subway networks makes urban residents expect that the future will be even better. When Chinese people point to new cities that shimmer at night with drone displays, or metropolises connected to one another by a glistening high-speed-rail network, they show genuine pride, in my experience. One way to impress 1 billion–plus people is to pour a lot of concrete. China has also turned itself into an energy superpower. Two decades ago, it produced about half of the electricity that the United States did. Today, it generates twice as much. Beijing is simultaneously attempting to wean itself off oil imports while leading the world in an 'all of the above' energy strategy that includes coal, nuclear, and wind plants, plus astounding amounts of new solar capacity. Beijing recently announced the construction of the Yarlung Tsangpo dam, which will use 60 times more cement than the Hoover Dam and will dwarf the already gigantic Three Gorges Dam. By the end of this year, more than half of the cars sold in China today will be electric—again the product of forceful policy. The engineering state is effective at making military goods too. China produces about 80 percent of the world's consumer drones, which can easily be adapted for the battlefield. China has approximately 200 times the shipbuilding capacity of the United States; according to the General Accounting Office, many classes of U.S. Navy ships are delayed by up to three years. Last December, then–National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said bluntly that the United States will experience 'exhaustion of munition stockpiles very rapidly' if it were ever to face the Chinese military. America has lost the productive capacity to sustain a major war. American manufacturing output has never recovered to its highs from 2008; the manufacturing workforce has shrunk by a million people since then. The United States has lost the ability to get stuff done as it focuses on procedures rather than results. In 2008, residents of California—the crucible of the American modern economy—voted to fund a high-speed-rail link between San Francisco and Los Angeles. That same year, China began construction of its high-speed-rail line between Beijing and Shanghai. China's line opened in 2011 at a cost of $33 billion. In its first decade of operation, it completed more than 1.3 billion passenger trips. Seventeen years after the ballot proposition, California has built a small stretch of rail to connect two cities in the Central Valley, neither of which is close to San Francisco or L.A. The latest estimate for California's rail line is $135 billion. The first segment of California's train will start operating, according to official estimates, between 2030 and 2033. That's a margin of error of three years—the same length of time that China needed to build the entire Beijing–Shanghai line. Even far smaller projects—a public bathroom, a bus-stop sun shelter—turn out underwhelming, embarrassingly late, or over budget. Americans today live in the ruins of an industrial civilization where the remaining infrastructure is barely maintained and rarely expanded. The result is a deep sense that nothing is working. The United States wasn't always like this. It once had the musculature of an engineering state, where lengthy train tracks, gorgeous bridges, beautiful cities, weapons of war with terrible power, and rockets to the moon were built. When the United States had surging population and economic growth through the 19th century, political elites agreed that its wide territories needed canals, rails, and highways. America's construction boom slowed down after the 1960s. [Patrick George: The American car industry can't go on like this] What happened then? The American public revolted against environmental harms, the highways then being rammed through urban neighborhoods, and industry regulators who were cozy with big companies. The legal profession started to change. Before the '60s, prominent lawyers filed into government to enact programs such as FDR's New Deal. Afterward, idealistic law students followed in the footsteps of the young Ralph Nader, who campaigned to be a watchdog of alleged government abuses. 'Sue the bastards,' a slogan of that era declared, urging environmentalists and other activists to take government agencies to court. A righteous impulse from that era has convinced many Americans that physical dynamism is undesirable and has robbed society of its ability to improve itself. Rather than expanding new subway systems, building nuclear-energy plants or rare-earths-processing facilities, or designing the path for a new transmission line, many of the country's smartest engineers have been seduced by Wall Street and Silicon Valley, where they can have more fun and make a lot more money. I am not suggesting that the United States copy China's approach. The engineering state's spectacular successes have come at staggering costs. Beijing treats its citizens as yet another building material and Chinese society as something to be engineered too. Officials have restricted ethno-religious minorities in Tibet and Xinjiang from practicing their religion and perpetuating their cultures. Only the engineering state could have pursued the one-child policy, which was ultimately a campaign of rural terror enforced through mass sterilizations and forced abortions. China's efforts to engineer the economy—which have produced slumping real-estate values and a collapse in corporate valuations—have frightened entrepreneurs and their investors. Beijing's efforts to engineer society have made many young people feel adrift, with a substantial portion desiring to emigrate abroad. In spite of sluggish construction, lawyers are a guarantor of America's great advantage against China: pluralism, or the ability of diverse cultures to coexist and thrive under equal protection. Americans are engaged in robust debate about how to make their country better. The United States is more dynamic than Europe and can look to its own history to see the path forward. You can see the remnants of the engineering state amid the mighty industrial works scattered all over the country. Americans can draw on that legacy to stage their country's next act of transformation. I like to imagine how much better the world would be if both superpowers could adopt the pathologies of the other. China would be better if it could be more lawyerly, which means embracing substantive legal protections for individuals. America needs an engineering culture to build homes, build mass transit, and build the energy systems necessary to decarbonize. Ford Bets $2 Billion on New Assembly System for Affordable EVs
Ford (F, Financials) said Monday it will invest $2 billion to overhaul its Louisville Assembly Plant into a factory for low-cost EVs, beginning with a $30,000 pickup slated for 2027. Warning! All rights reserved F ord's $5 billion plan to get cheaper electric vehicles on the road by 2027 is intriguing not simply because it's happening as the Trump Administration works to hamper the EV industry's growth, but because it signals both it and General Motors, which make most of their money selling big gasoline-powered pickups and SUVs, seem to be getting serious about competing with Tesla and Chinese automakers that threaten their long-term health. There aren't a lot of specifics yet about Ford's $30,000 electric pickup that's due in a couple of years, but its new low-cost manufacturing process and a cheaper lithium-iron phosphate, or LFP, battery could help the company that standardized assembly-line production over a century ago become a key player as the global auto industry rapidly electrifies. GM, which has seen strong sales of its newest electric models this year, including the $35,000 Equinox SUV, is also introducing a restyled Bolt crossover this year that's likely to sell for about $30,000. That could be compelling to many carbuyers since the average new EV sold in the U.S. currently goes for $55,689, while the overall new car or light truck average transaction price is $48,841, according to Kelley Blue Book. Like Ford, GM plans to use new, cheaper battery chemistries, including LFP cells as well as a new lithium-manganese battery due in 2028, and has committed billions of dollars to electrifying its lineup. Both carmakers may be tempted to slow those efforts now that Trump has killed off federal EV rebates and manufacturing incentives. Weakened federal fuel-efficiency rules might entice them into relying more on gasoline-powered trucks, but doing so would threaten their sales outside the U.S., as low-cost Chinese EVs, particularly those from BYD, rapidly take market share from gasoline-powered models in Europe, South America and Oceania. And after a decade of EV dominance in the U.S. by Tesla, Elon Musk's fading popularity has done substantial damage to that brand, creating a new opportunity for traditional automakers like Ford and GM to gain sales from new buyers, particularly in EV-loving California. California High-Speed Rail Authority With the clawing back of $4 billion in federal grants to support it, the Trump Administration seems hell bent on ensuring that California's high-speed rail project ends up as precisely the 'train to nowhere' the President has lambasted it as. Gov. Gavin Newsom is suing to keep the money, but the train's new CEO has big ideas for saving the priciest U.S. infrastructure project. They include new long-term funding, private partnerships and even turning to one of California's newest 'natural' resources: The AI data center. Ian Choudri, who spent decades working on global mega-infrastructure projects for major engineering firms Bechtel, Alstom and Parsons before taking the high-speed rail job last September, is on a mission to convince skeptics that after years of slow progress, the Golden State's bullet train from San Francisco to Los Angeles can be built– perhaps for less than its $128 billion price tag and even without federal support. 'We'll show that it becomes less cumbersome on taxpayers because it's generating revenue,' he told Forbes, without providing financial details. In addition to future ride revenue, he thinks the system can make money by letting tech firms build data centers on its land, powering them with solar farms that will also propel its trains. Other ideas include selling the rights to telecom companies to lay fiber optic cable along the train's path, and promoting real-estate development projects on its route, particularly in the lower-priced Central Valley region. 'We're getting contacted by Silicon Valley investors now asking, 'Hey, can we move data centers into Fresno and plug into your power grid that's renewable?'' Choudri said. Electrification as a trend is going to only go in one direction. The one single most valid data point is that anybody who drives an electric car is not going back to a gasoline or a diesel car. That's a fact more than just a prediction. The slope of the [EV market] curve … was actually fairly slow penetration, which is why it did not initially get the attention of the Fords and the GMs and all the big automakers. Then it accelerated, and they started taking it very seriously. Now what's happened in the last couple of years is that despite recent news we're seeing from automakers like GM and Ford, I don't share the same level of optimism that they're going to put the commensurate weight behind electrification as they would have a couple of years back. What that does is it's going to separate the guys who are serious about this trend, whose life depends on this trend, from the ones who have other cards in their pocket to survive this next phase. That next level of merging is electrification, autonomy and distributed energy, which is not being talked about a lot.
