City council slashes HR policies
The council has reduced its documents from 55 to ten.
A review was carried out to modernise and simplify the policies, with many of the existing items found to be out of date.
Kerry Eldridge, director of people and organisational culture, said it was hoped the new policies could be launched across the council as quickly as possible.
Speaking at a governance committee meeting on Monday, July 28, Ms Eldridge said: 'Everyone has been crying for these for quite some time.
'The trade unions quite frankly hate the policies that we are currently utilising.
'I can't say the managers like them either because they struggle to find their way through them.'
The meeting heard the council's people and organisational culture team had been working on reviewing the policies for the past four months using Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) templates.
Feedback had been taken from legal colleagues, trade unions, managers and employees.
Three statutory policies – disciplinary, resolution/grievance and sickness absence – were presented to the governance committee for approval.
A fourth – employee code of conduct – will come forward at a later date when more of the council's governance review is completed.
Meanwhile, the other six documents were procedures on how the council does things within the organisation.

‘Alarming' drop in UK consumer confidence over last year – Which?
Consumer confidence in the future UK economy has plummeted over the last year, figures suggest. Confidence has tumbled by 31 points over the last year, from an average of minus nine between May and July 2024 to an average of minus 40 between May and July this year, Which?'s Consumer Insight Tracker shows. On average between this May and July, 56% of people thought the economy would get worse and just 16% thought it would get better. Which? said the figures showed a 'significant fall' to some of the lowest levels seen since early 2023, when the cost-of-living crisis was in the headlines and inflation was in double figures. Confidence in the future economy declined sharply last autumn and was particularly low between February to May, when global events such as the US tariff policy contributed to the pessimism. Confidence had recovered a little since, but remained considerably lower than 12 months ago. Pensioners have been the most pessimistic group, with their confidence in the future UK economy falling dramatically from an average of minus five between May and July last year to a current average of minus 63. Pensioners' confidence dropped dramatically in autumn last year – shortly after the Government's first announcement of scrapping the winter fuel allowance for most pensioners – and has remained low since, in spite of the Government U-turn on fuel payments. Which?'s figures suggest that financial difficulties from the height of the cost-of-living crisis are yet to return to the pre-crisis levels. In the month to July 18, an estimated 2.1 million households missed at least one essential payment such as rent or mortgage payments, utility bills, credit card or loan payments. An estimated 13.9 million households (49%) also made at least one adjustment to cover essential spending such as utility bills, housing costs, groceries, school supplies and medicines in the last month – such as cutting back on essentials, dipping into savings, selling possessions or borrowing. Rocio Concha, Which? director of policy and advocacy, said: 'Our research shows consumer confidence in the future of the UK economy has dropped alarmingly over the last year. 'The Government has rightly focused on growing the economy and raising living standards but in doing so, it must not overlook the importance of consumer protections in restoring confidence. 'People are sick to the teeth of having to dodge fraudsters when shopping online, watching out for rogue traders when making home improvements and needing to keep an eye out for dodgy pricing practices which mean that offers aren't as good as they first appear. 'The right consumer protections give people the confidence to spend and the Government must place these protections at the heart of its plans to grow the economy.'

JD Vance has a rough day of golf at Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland
JD Vance's visit to the U.K. had another subpar moment when the vice president swung his way through a brutal round of golf on Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland. Video of the 41-year-old Republican needing four putts to conquer one green, according to local reports, went viral on social media Friday. Golf Monthly says that's nearly double the number of putts an average golfer spends on a green. Vance and his family arrived in Scotland on Wednesday, according to the BBC. He reportedly hit the links on Thursday surrounded by secret service personnel. Vance is fresh off a stay in the English countryside, where the staff of popular pub The Bull in Charlbury allegedly threatened a mutiny if they were forced to serve the staunch conservative. The restaurant didn't accept his reservation, according to The Daily Beast. Some residents of the Oxfordshire hamlet were upset by Vance choosing their region to spend some downtime. Local media outlet the Oxford Clarion posted photos of signs in locals' lawns protesting the vice president. Residents also complained to the BBC throughout the week that, politics aside, Vance's motorcade was crowding country streets and complicating daily travel. The historic Turnberry golf course came under the umbrella of the Trump Organization in 2014. Even before first becoming president in 2016, Trump was met by protesters objecting to his 'toxic, racist views' when he visited his Scotland links, according to The Guardian. He returned to Turnberry in July — this time having twice been elected to serve in the White House — and was once again greeted by critics upset over the war in Gaza, his treatment of immigrants in the U.S., and his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In March, Turnberry was targeted by vandals who were angered by the Trump administration's handling of Israel's invasion of Gaza. Protesters painted 'Gaza is not for sale' on the property's white gates. His course in Ireland has also been vandalized over politics. _____

Electric car grant expanded to offer discount on more new models
The price of five electric cars has been cut as the Government widens a scheme to encourage people to switch. The decision means 22 cars are eligible for the electric car grant, with prices reduced by up to £1,500. Models from Volkswagen, Peugeot and Cupra have been added to the list. It is part of a £650 million investment by ministers to get people to move away from petrol or diesel cars. The new cars subject to the £1,500 discount are the Cupra Born, Volkswagen ID.3, Peugeot e-208, Peugeot e-2008 and Peugeot e-Rifter. The cost represents a 4% discount on the Cupra. The carmaker's website is advertising the car for £37,460. The Volkswagen is being advertised for £30,860, and the Peugeot models range from £20,245 to about £35,000. The number of electric cars registered in the first quarter of 2025 was 43% higher than the same period last year, according to figures published this week. DVLA data showed more than 120,000 zero-emissions cars were registered between January and March this year. Electric cars made up a fifth of registrations, up by 3% compared with the year before. The Government said it is also investing in electric car charging infrastructure in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions. However the attempts to move people away from petrol and diesel has been criticised by some who claim electric cars are also damaging to the environment because of the precious metals that need to be mined for batteries. The announcement comes a week after the Government last broadened the initiative. Earlier in August it added 13 models, including cars produced by Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall. At the time, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the Government was 'delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric'. She added: 'This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people's pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward.'
