Telangana gears up for fusion of faith, fashion
NALGONDA: On May 12, Nagarjunasagar's tranquil Buddhist sites will shimmer with a rare fusion of spirituality and stardust as Miss World delegates descend upon its sacred grounds. Amid hurried renovations at the VIP Vijaya Vihar guesthouse, the stage is set for 140 nations to witness Telangana's heritage.
Three days later, the journey continues in Bhoodan Pochampally, where vibrant Ikat sarees will dazzle on a global ramp, weaving handloom legacy into the pageant's fabric before spiritual rituals at Yadagirigutta temple elevate this cultural symphony.
The event will see participation from young women representing 140 countries, along with around 3,000 national and international media representatives. As part of their itinerary to explore various tourist destinations across the state, the delegates will arrive at Nagarjunasagar, where they are scheduled to visit Buddhavanam and Nagarjunakonda. The visit is part of the Miss World competition being organised by the Telangana Tourism department in Hyderabad from May 7 to 31.
With only a few days left for the event, renovation works at Vijaya Vihar are progressing at a brisk pace. Painting, installation of new AC units, renovation of toilets, new electrical wiring, drainage work and other upgrades are currently underway. In addition, a road is being constructed from the Nagarjunasagar main road to Vijaya Vihar.
The government has allocated `5 crore for these works, and officials have stated that all tasks will be completed within the next three days.
Last month, Tourism department Managing Director Prakash Reddy, along with District Collector Ila Tripathi, inspected the preparations. During a review meeting, they instructed officials to develop the tourist sites in a way that showcases Telangana's rich culture and traditions to national and international audiences.
Ikat fashion show planned
The Miss World contestants will also travel from Hyderabad to Bhoodan Pochampally on May 15 to visit a handloom-themed area. Officials said the contestants are expected to participate in a ramp show wearing Pochampally Ikat sarees.
Following the show, the contestants, adorned in traditional sarees, will proceed to Yadagirigutta. They will first arrive at the Presidential Suite located at the foot of the hill, and from there, perform Sankalpa pujas at Vishnu Pushkarini and participate in Akhanda Deeparadhana pujas near the main temple. After seeking the blessings of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, they will inspect the reconstruction works at the main temple. Sources said a documentary will also be filmed during the visit.
It is anticipated that the visit of the Miss World contestants will significantly enhance the global profile of the Yadagirigutta temple.

L ucknow: The UP govt will showcase the state's tourism potential at the upcoming Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) 2025 meet, scheduled to be held in Bangkok from Aug 26-28. An official said: "The event will serve as a powerful platform for UP to project itself as an attractive destination for both international tourists and investors. This will elevate the tourism potential and economy of the state to new heights." The exhibit will feature creative displays of historic temples, their unique architecture and spiritual significance, offering visitors a deep glimpse into UP's rich religious and cultural legacy. The govt will also organise a one-day international roadshow in Bangkok. This roadshow is expected to draw over 100 stakeholders, including travel traders, travel media and influencers. The event will also include a showcase of photos, films and promotional materials. To amplify its global reach, the UP govt will air 30-second tourism ads during peak hours for three days on three major TV and three radio channels in Thailand. Additionally, 10 key locations in Bangkok will display the promos 15 times a day over three days. Digital screens will also support brand visibility. Visitors to UP's pavilion will be welcomed with exceptional hospitality and engaging experiences. The stall will offer refreshments, including drinking water, tea, and coffee. To provide deeper insights into the state's tourism offerings, brochures, maps and PR kits will be distributed. "The state's grand participation in PATA Bangkok 2025 will serve as a powerful platform to showcase its Buddhist, spiritual and cultural legacy to international tourists and investors," officials said, adding that the event is expected not only to boost tourism but also to open new avenues for investment, strengthening the state's economic growth. Two Americans among 63 stranded tourists airlifted from N Sikkim
Gangtok, June 5 (UNI) Two US citizens among 63 stranded tourists, including children and women, were successfully airlifted from landslide-ravaged Chaten village in north Sikkim, by an Indian Air Force helicopter to the Pakyong airport, some 30 km east of Gangtok, official sources said. Among the evacuees at the Pakyong airport was a Buddhist monk, who with others got stranded on May 29 last after a cloudburst triggered landslides blocking all exit routes from Sikkim's last village in the north to the rest of the world. The other side of the Chaten and Lachen lies the China border. "A total 63 tourists, including adults, children, and two US citizens, have been evacuated by an IAF helicopter and brought to Pakyong airport. Further evacuations will be conducted, subject to weather conditions," said a one-liner Sikkim government communique. This was the second aerial evacuation after June 3 in which 30 stranded tourists and 4 injured Army personnel were evacuated. On Wednesday, attempts to fly two helicopters proved futile twice as the choppers were forced to return following worsening weather conditions.
