Met dept issues warning for thunderstorms, lightning in Uttar Pradesh
The monsoon depression formed over the Bay of Bengal has weakened into a low-pressure area over northwestern Madhya Pradesh, due to the effect of a western disturbance and other favourable synoptic and geophysical conditions.
'As a result, many parts of the state are likely to witness light to moderate rain over the next two days, with heavy rainfall at some places and very heavy rainfall likely in western Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday,' said Atul Kumar Singh, senior scientist at Lucknow met office.
Subsequently, with the monsoon trough shifting northward and the main rain belt moving towards the Terai region, heavy rainfall is likely in the Terai areas during the first week of August.
Lucknow and nearby areas received light rainfall on Monday afternoon, bringing the daytime temperature down to 31.7 degrees Celsius. The forecast for Tuesday predicts an overcast sky with one or two spells of moderate rain or thundershower. The day and night temperatures are expected to hover around 31°C and 27°C, respectively.
The state forecast indicates that rain or thundershowers are very likely at many places across the state.
The Lucknow met department has issued a warning that thunderstorms accompanied with lightning are very likely at isolated locations across the state. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated spots in western UP, while eastern UP may see heavy rain at isolated places.
In the past 24 hours, Sultanpur recorded the highest rainfall at 48.6 mm, followed by Gorakhpur with 42.3 mm, Ayodhya with 9.6 mm, and Bareilly with 8.8 mm.
U.P. RAIN DEFICIT
Uttar Pradesh currently has an overall rainfall deficit of 8%, having received 307.8 mm of rain compared to the normal 333.5 mm. Eastern UP recorded 276.7 mm against a normal of 360.6 mm, reflecting a 23% deficit. In contrast, Western UP received 352.2 mm of rainfall, 19% above the normal of 295.5 mm.

A red warning has been issued for Udhampur, Reasi, Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, wind gusts exceeding 60 kilometres per hour, and rainfall exceeding 15 millimetres per hour, as quoted by the PTI. Residents have been advised to stay alert and closely follow weather advisories issued by the MeT department to ensure their safety during the ongoing severe weather conditions. Schools are expected to remain closed until conditions improve, with reopening planned for August 18, as officials continue to monitor the situation closely, according to reports by the PTI. Heavy rain likely in north Bengal due to formation of low pressure area: IMD
Agency: PTI Kolkata, Aug 12 (PTI) A low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday as a result of which, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in the northern districts of West Bengal till August 15, the IMD said. The low pressure system is likely to become more marked over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rain are likely to occur in several south Bengal districts till August 16, it said. The IMD said that the sub-Himalayan districts of Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong are very likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall till August 15. It said that the north Bengal districts are likely to receive heavy downpour owing to the collective effects of the low pressure area, an active monsoon trough in the region and strong moisture incursion. Wildfires in Spain kill one, thousands flee
A man died from burns and thousands of people were forced to flee as wildfires swept through parts of Spain on Tuesday, fuelled by strong winds during a searing heatwave. The wildfire broke out near where a similar blaze forced evacuations earlier this month.(Unsplash/representational) The victim suffered serious burns as winds of up to 70 kilometres (43 miles) per hour whipped the flames through Tres Cantos, a wealthy suburb north of the capital Madrid, officials said. He later died in hospital, in the first fatality from dozens of wildfires to have hit the country since the heatwave began last week. The head of the regional government of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, said she "deeply regretted" the man's death in a message on X. Hundreds of residents in Tres Cantos were evacuated from their homes. "In barely 40 minutes, the fire advanced six kilometres," Carlos Novillo, Madrid's regional environment chief, told reporters. By Tuesday morning, regional officials said the blaze had been contained. Elsewhere, about 2,000 people were evacuated from hotels and homes near the popular beaches of Tarifa in the southern region of Andalusia. The wildfire broke out near where a similar blaze forced evacuations earlier this month. "We managed to save the residential area at the very last second," said Antonio Sanz, the interior minister in the regional government of Andalusia. A Civil Guard police officer was injured when struck by a car while helping with the evacuation, he added. In the northwestern region of Castile and Leon, more than 30 blazes were reported Monday, including one threatening Las Medulas, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient Roman gold mines. The wildfires coincide with what meteorologists expect to be the most intense day yet of the ongoing heatwave, with all regions under weather alerts. Forecasters warn of highs around 40 Celsius and overnight lows that remain above 25 Celsius.
