Leg-spin bowling is becoming extinct: V V Kumar
V V Kumar
Vaman Viswanath Kumar, fondly known as V V Kumar, may have stepped away from playing cricket nearly 50 years ago, but the sport has never left the Tamil Nadu leg-spin great.
Kumar, who will celebrate his 90th birthday on Thursday, still breathes cricket: he tosses the ball as accurately as a present-day spinner would before his run-up, recites stats from yesteryear as if those matches happened in the recent past, keeps track of live action and stays associated with the sport by mentoring youngsters.
Kumar, a former India international with two Test appearances in 1961, was the linchpin of the Tamil Nadu (then Madras) bowling attack for two decades, picking up an astonishing 599 first-class wickets.
During his 22-season-long domestic career, he formed a deadly spin combination with S Venkataraghavan, making Tamil Nadu contenders, although they could not achieve Ranji Trophy glory. In an interview with Shrivathsan S, he discusses his illustrious career and how leg-spin bowling is becoming a diminishing art.
Excerpts:
You turned out to be one of the leading Indian spinners of your time. When and how did you fall in love with leg-spin bowling?
When I was in Class IX, I was intrigued by the game. However, playing cricket was not easy, as the equipment was expensive. I obtained a golf ball, which was sold for four annas (25 paise). My slow-bowling career was based on what I learned playing with a golf ball. Because it's so small, it's hard to grip and spin.

The depressions on its surface prevent it from turning the way it should, but it causes deviations. That idea stuck with me, and I thought, 'Why not try the same with a bigger ball?' That's how it all began.
How has the art of leg-spin bowling changed over the years?
Since 2008-2009, the theory and execution of leg-spin have been different. Leg-spin is becoming extinct. In white-ball cricket, especially T20 cricket, you are asked to contain rather than look for wickets.
If you do the same in Test cricket, you will be taken to the cleaners. At those times, the concept of leg-spin was different. It was about drawing the batter in, outsmarting him, and getting him out. If leg-spin bowling is to regain its old glory, it will take a considerable amount of time.
It can only be restored with Test cricket, nothing else.
There was a certain thrill in watching a batter step out only to get back to the crease in confusion, unsure of what had just happened.
Moments like those were gratifying because you knew you'd outwitted him with sheer craft.
Could you list some of your memorable dismissals?
When I played for Prime Minister's XI against Australia in Bengaluru in the 1960s, the visitors had Ian Redpath on their team. Even when I was bowling well outside the off-stump, he played the ball on the leg side. I then decided to pitch the ball outside leg-stump, forcing him to be locked to the crease.
I got him stumped because he was unable to move. The dismissal gave me great satisfaction. In my first Test against Pakistan in Delhi, Imtiaz Ahmed danced down the pitch only to see his off-stump disturbed.
I flighted the ball more compared to the previous deliveries in that over. It was one of the great dismissals of my career.
Did you believe you could have played more international cricket?
I had a wrist issue and was not 100% fit to play against England (at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai), but I was asked to.
I felt that it was not a risk I was supposed to take in a Test match, but I was told I would be able to adapt. I bowled defensively in the first innings and didn't take a wicket. I was then told I was being held in reserve for the next match and not given an over in the second innings. The sacrifice of playing the Brabourne Test cost me my India career; that is what happens when you play for someone else.
But not playing another match for India did not deter me.
By making use of every opportunity I got, I established myself as one of the top spinners in the country. However, I did not get the recognition.
You played in the same era as the famed spin quartet …
Erapalli Prasanna, Bishan Singh Bedi, and Venkataraghavan were already top-class, while B S Chandrasekhar was still finding his footing. He was raw in the early days but had great potential. 'Tiger' (Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi) had the trump card in Chandra, while Pras is the greatest off-spinner I have ever seen.
In situations that were not conducive for India to win, it was Chandra who did the job for the team. No batter could master Chandra.
The spin quartet under Tiger made India a force to be reckoned with in Test-match cricket.
What do you make of the current Tamil Nadu senior men's set-up?
I have been following their matches (Ranji Trophy). The players have to change their mindset to a great extent. I have seen batters play inappropriate strokes to balls, including bad ones.
In the bowling department, they cannot rely on just one bowler. Another issue is a lack of consistency. By the time you reach the knockouts, you need to have built that rhythm. You should be going in with the mindset, 'I'm just as good as you; let's see what happens'.
But I feel that confidence is missing when they face strong teams.
How impressed were you with ace offie Ravichandran Ashwin?
He is a great bowler, but I cannot compare him to anyone else. To get into the bracket of highest wicket-takers as an off-spinner is a recognition in itself. He is great in his own way.

Travis Kelce drops pounds, and George Kittle can't help but notice his offseason commitment
George Kittle's honest take on Travis Kelce's weight loss (USA TODAY NETWORK) After enduring a tough Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Travis Kelce isn't shying away from the fact that 2024 wasn't his best. The Kansas City Chiefs' veteran tight end, who briefly flirted with the idea of retirement, ultimately chose to return—motivated by more than just another shot at glory. Determined to bounce back stronger, Kelce has committed himself to growth both as a player and as a leader. George Kittle gets real about Travis Kelce's new shape Travis Kelce's numbers last season reflected a noticeable dip. With just 823 receiving yards and three touchdowns, it marked his lowest output since his rookie year—a time when he was barely involved in the offense. Even in the playoffs, the usually dominant tight end managed only 58 yards combined in the AFC Championship and Super Bowl, though he did snag two touchdowns. By Kelce's standards, that performance wasn't enough. Determined to regain his edge, Kelce took a different approach this offseason—shedding some weight in an effort to enhance his agility and longevity. While reports claimed he dropped as much as 25 pounds, Kelce clarified that the number wasn't quite that dramatic, though he did admit he's lighter than he was last season. His leaner look hasn't gone unnoticed. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, who co-hosts Tight End University alongside Kelce, addressed the chatter with high praise. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo 'I'm pretty sure one of the Super Bowls they won, I saw him the previous offseason and he was like 280 pounds,' Kittle said on ESPN. 'I think he was first-team All-Pro and won a Super Bowl, so he's going to be ready for the season regardless of what it is. He does look great right now.' Despite his 'down year,' Kelce still led the Chiefs in receiving yards and remained a vital piece of the puzzle that brought them back to another Super Bowl. It's this kind of consistency that defines his legacy. With seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and five Super Bowl appearances under his belt, Kelce has already cemented his place as one of the NFL 's all-time greats. Whether or not the slimmer frame translates into peak performance again, one thing's certain—Travis Kelce isn't done yet. He's reloading, not retreating. And that could spell trouble for defenses in 2025. WI vs AUS, 1st Test: Wickets tumble as Australia routed for 180 by West Indies on day 1
West Indies shot out Australia for 180 and discovered how tricky the Kensington Oval pitch was when it lost four wickets on day one of the series opener. The home side was 57 for four at stumps with Brandon King unbeaten on 23 on debut, trying to make up for his three dropped catches in the field. Teammate Jayden Seales took five for 60, his third test five-for, all at home, but Shamar Joseph was the more impressive bowler with four for 46. In nine Tests, he has 34 wickets, 17 of them Australians. He owned the morning session. Australia was all out inside 57 overs for its lowest total in the West Indies after batting first. Only three batters got into double figures: Usman Khawaja (47), Travis Head (59) and captain Pat Cummins (28). There was some deja vu for Australia from the World Test Championship final against South Africa less than two weeks ago at Lord's. Australia was out for 212 on the first day when 14 wickets were also taken. Cummins followed tradition in Bridgetown when he won the toss and chose to bat first. What looked like a bat-first pitch — mainly bare and dry — was revealed as a trap gifting the pacers seam, swing and the odd shooter. Of the day's 14 wickets, 10 came from edges. After an hour, Australia was 22 for three. Sam Konstas, replacing the dropped Marnus Labuschagne, was out for three in the fourth over, lbw on the back leg to Joseph. Head passed Khawaja to 50 off 57 balls, before the latter was out for 47 off 128, nicking Joseph. Their 89-run partnership was the longest of the day. | Photo Credit: AFP Cameron Green came in and was dropped in the same over at gully by King. Green was still bagged by Joseph after nicking to second slip. Josh Inglis, covering for an injured Steve Smith at No. 4, pulled Seales but top-edged high up for wicketkeeper Shai Hope, playing his first test in four years. It was the first of Hope's four catches. Khawaja had been hunkering down but when Head arrived they counter-punched. They continued after lunch, when Khawaja was dropped, again by King, on 45. Head passed Khawaja to 50 off 57 balls, before the latter was out for 47 off 128, nicking Joseph. Their 89-run partnership was the longest of the day. When Beau Webster was castled, Joseph had 4-25 off 12 overs. Joseph also appeared to then claim Head, who under-edged behind. But the third umpire said video was inconclusive that the ball carried to Hope. Seales got his second wicket after Alex Carey edged to first slip on eight on the cusp of tea. Head was out straight after the break on 59 off 78 balls, including nine boundaries. He edged Justin Greaves behind. Seales mopped up the last three wickets. Starc fires back Kraigg Brathwaite couldn't get through the fifth over of the West Indies' reply, nicking Mitchell Starc on 4. Starc also got the edge of the other opener, John Campbell, on 7. Cummins prised out Keacy Carty for 20, and Josh Hazlewood joined the party by removing nightwatchman Jomel Worrican for a duck. That forced new captain Roston Chase to join King, and they survived the day's last 3.1 overs. Chase, playing his first test since March 2023, had 1.
