Oh what a peeling: suit over alleged Toyota paint flaws
The Japanese vehicle juggernaut has been Australia's best-selling car brand for more than two decades with Corollas, in particular, outstripping other competitors in its class.
The suit was filed in the Federal Court on Wednesday on behalf of disgruntled drivers of Corollas manufactured from July 12, 2010 to September 30, 2014 and painted with factory code 040 white paint.
The claim argues the paint defect breaches Australian Consumer Law and that Toyota is liable to compensate affected customers for loss and damage.
Under Australian Consumer Law, any vehicle purchased from 2011 onwards must be of "acceptable quality".
But in a July 2022 statement, Toyota Australia explained the alleged defects could have arisen because of sustained sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) exposure.
"Over time, (exposure) degrades the adhesion between the factory-applied paint primer coat layer and the base metal electrodeposition layer, causing paint to peel from the metal body panel."
Lawyers from William Roberts argued that Toyota hid some crucial information from consumers about alleged manufacturing problems.
"Throughout the periods during which the affected vehicles were manufactured, Toyota did not disclose to the public that affected vehicles contained the paint peeling defect or ... had the propensity to experience the ... defect," they said.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says consumers have a right to a free repair when a car has a minor problem.
A Facebook group boasting over 7000 members, dedicated to taking Toyota to task over what they say are flaws from the car maker, had several Corolla drivers voicing their intention to join the lawsuit.
Many posted photos of paint peeled off from large sections of their vehicles.

Rovanpera delights home crowd with Rally of Finland victory
Finland's Kalle Rovanpera boosted his bid for a third world rally championship title with a dominant win in front of his home fans in the Rally of Finland on Sunday. The Hyundai driver's hopes of victory had disappeared when he was slapped with a five-minute penalty after an incident on Friday. Tanak left the control zone after tyre scanning before receiving permission from a scrutineer and struck the official with his front bumper resulting in minor injuries. His sanction also carries a suspended penalty of 35 championship points. The title race looks set to go down to the wire with just five races remaining, though, defending champion Thierry Neuville's hopes of defending his crown dimmed further as he finished sixth. Ongoing $407 act on side of Aussie freeway prompts calls for new roadside cameras
You might drive past and not notice, but if you're paying attention, it would be hard to miss a bizarre – and illegal – roadside practice that is again being called out in one of Australia's biggest cities. Along a major freeway in Melbourne, drivers continue to discard disposable e-cigarette cartridges or vapes, causing them to keep building up on a dividing wall along the West Gate Freeway as motorists head into the city. One driver took a photo of the stretch of road, sharing it online on Saturday, showing the plastic vapes littered all over the place, prompting some to call for cameras to be installed to catch the drivers responsible for the trend. "This is gross, clean this up. Fine the people doing this," one commenter said. "This is deeply infuriating. It's absurd the fact that this amount of people in this country think littering is completely acceptable," another wrote. Related: Concerning roadside find reveals dangerous trend landing users in hospital While Melbourne, like cities around the country, has increased the number of cameras monitoring motorists for driving infringements like mobile phone use, some residents believe littering cameras should be installed at the trouble spot. "Seems like a camera would pay itself back with fines in a week," one person commented. According to the Environmental Protection Authority of Victoria (EPA), the fine for littering from a vehicle is $407 and $2,035 for a company. However that jumps if the item is considered dangerous, like a lit cigarette, doubling to $814 and $4,070 respectively. It's been an ongoing issue that authorities have had to deal with over the last couple of years. When previously contacted by Yahoo about the problem on the West Gate Freeway, it was understood The Department of Transport, which oversees the freeway, did not have a specific plan for the vape littering trend and was treating it like regular rubbish build up. Last year, a parliamentary inquiry in Victoria heard how the plastic e-cigarette devices were creating an increasing environmental problem in the state, as well as posing a serious risk of starting fires when littered. "Vapes contain lithium-ion batteries, which are combustible and are an ignition source when improperly handled, meaning that they can cause fires when they are not sorted, separated, handled, or stored appropriately," the then CEO of Victoria's EPA, Lee Miezis, told the inquiry. War against vapes is driving down the number of users Shifting social norms and concerted government campaigns are slowing the number of young people being hooked on vapes, but Australia isn't out of the woods yet, expert say. A survey of almost 15,000 14 to 17-year olds found the number of teens vaping fell from 18 to 15 per cent since February 2023. A report released last month by the Cancer Council's Generation Vape Project found rates of e-cigarettes among 30 to-59-year-olds have halved, while fewer than one-in-five 18 to 24-year-olds used vapes. Despite being banned, vape shops and tobacconists are leading a rise in black market sales of vapes, Cancer Council chair Alecia Brooks said. The report found the number of vapes being bought by young people at stores surged to almost 35 per cent of all sales. That is despite laws only allowing vapes to be sold in participating pharmacies where they are sold for the purpose of helping people quit smoking or manage nicotine dependence. The Australian Border Force and the Therapeutic Goods Administration have also seized almost $500 billion worth of illicit vapes since January 2024. Warning as photo of $10,000 Tesla item reveals new secondhand trend
Thousands of Australian homeowners and businesses are embracing new technology to provide bankable power to their premises as battery technology continues to evolve. And some are even experimenting with "cowboy" set-ups as batteries from discarded electric vehicles become more common in secondhand markets around the country. It's not the type of thing you expect to buy on Facebook Marketplace, but one current ad, ostensibly from a warehouse in Melbourne shows a number of large Tesla batteries for sale. While the listing states the batteries – on offer for $10,000 each – were from a Tesla Model 3, they are "ready to be used as a large solar storage battery" suitable for large off grid or commercial purposes, the listing says. When approached by Yahoo, the seller was hardly forthcoming with information but said the batteries were "from written off cars mostly very low kms". When asked if the batteries came with any paperwork, they simply linked to a website for a lithium battery business based in Perth. While it's certainly possible to repurpose old car batteries for solar storage, there are serious risks involved and experts caution that it shouldn't be attempted by most people. If there's an exception to the rule, it's probably for someone like Stefan Maric who runs a lighting and electrical business in Greater Melbourne. He recently purchased a written off BYD for a measly $2,500 and used the battery as part of a solar storage system at a business site in Geelong. "We removed the battery, we have a forklift here on site, and we put it in a safe area where we could mechanically protect the battery," he told Yahoo News, stressing the safety measures his team took. That was about six months ago, he said, "and it's been running perfectly." The battery was from a BYD Atto 3 extended range, "which typically has a 60kwh battery and basically there are certain CAN-bus protocols (a centralised communication component known as a Controller Area Network bus) that can be used to communicate with certain inverters which are your typical solar inverters," he explained. "The important thing, from my perspective is to ensure that all of those cells are being charged and discharged within their parameters – and that's what this CAN-bus enables." He warned that you need to be qualified to embark on such a project, however. "It's still technically considered low voltage when you're talking electrical terms, but you will die if you touch live conductors," he told Yahoo. Warning over 'cowboy' battery market Australian battery refurbishing company InfinitEV, a subsidiary of ASX 200 listed Amotiv Limited, which says its main purpose is to extend the lifetime of batteries has also researched the business case of redirecting EV batteries for solar storage systems. "We do not see a commercial repurposed BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) application at the current volumes," the company's commercial manager Oscar Vall told Yahoo News. "Plain and simple, it's still quite a cowboy space," he said, adding that repurposing batteries in home storage systems is "not encouraged by the manufacturer and not encouraged by us". "There's a lot of people out there that will take the wrecked vehicle, take the battery out, and then try to make a battery energy storage system, bypassing a lot of safety aspects of that battery," he said. Ultimately the battery is being used in an environment it wasn't necessarily designed for and while a storage system is likely to put less stress on a battery than a car, if not done well there can be real risks, he warned. "There's a lot of safety implications of doing this, and I will definitely not like to be the insurer of the property that has a battery like that stuck on the wall." InfinitEV has explored the commercial possibilities of repurposing EV batteries and recently teamed up with Sustainability Victoria and another start-up to redirect multiple Nissan Leaf battery packs to create a 120kWh energy storage system to take a facility off-grid. Related: How recycling EV batteries can power the green transition "We can do it," Oscar said, admitting it's great as a PR exercise or experimental showcase, but currently doing it safely and at scale is not an enticing value proposition, he said. However he noted that could likely change when there electric car market in Australia further develops and there is "more feedstock", or discarded batteries, to supply such a potential business stream. Currently, he said "considering the amount of advanced battery systems coming out of China at a very low cost and already designed for this," it makes sense for most people and businesses to simply use them. Aussie homes embrace battery storage as rates surge As for Australian households, they are installing solar batteries at record rates this year, with more than 19,000 registered in a month. Figures released on Friday by market analysis firm SunWiz indicated consumers could more than double the number of home batteries installed in a single year. The surge, which was largely anticipated, comes after the launch of the federal government's $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which offers rebates of up to 30 per cent for the installation of the home system, a policy trying to leverage the high rates of rooftop solar already in Australia. On Monday, Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen took to social media claiming his government had delivered 15,325 "cheaper" home batteries in "just four weeks" since the program commenced at the start of July.
